All it will take is one giant rock half the size of a city and it's ni ni time....that's why we're here basically. Dinosaurs refused to let us evolve. So money spent on any form of space exploration to prevent that happening again is just one of many crucial reasons why we must do it, it's not all about curiosity.

What irritates me is that technology exists that can faciliate travel through the cosmos at meaningful speeds and not the snails pace rocketry we currently use. All whilst being completely protected from the onslaught of cosmic radiation beyond the Van Allen belts.

CERN? Yes. Science.
It faced hurdles at every single stage of it's construction...the massive land area used, the staggering cost, worries about creating a black hole or grey goo...it was never ending, and still goes on. It's easily fed by a public who is pretty much scientifically illiterate and also who has been spoon fed the lie that "the Earth is ruined" or that "the world is dying", that "there's better things to spend the money on". Until society treats scientists, space exploration, and science in general with the same respect, adulation, and hero-worship that we treat overpaid idiots who kick a ball around for a living, we will never advance much... |

Well call the Starman himself. Maybe Ziggy could re-establish communications with Major Tom, who may be able to answer the question about 'Life On Mars'. After all, Space (is an) Oddity...
O that was so lame, I know... |

Propulsion technology exists that will allow any spacecraft to travel at speeds approaching sizeable fractions of light speed (approx 5-10% light speed). Not only that, technology also exists that can protect the occupants of said craft from cosmic radiation without the corresponding mass penalty associated with "traditional" forms of spacecraft radiation shielding.

why does it irritate you though?
And what are these technologies? other than at sub atomic particle scale (CERN, LHC)) The record for the fastest speed any human has ever travelled relative to the Earth was set by Apollo 10, which reached 39,897 kph. That's approximately 0.0037% the speed of light. For comparison, the fastest unmanned craft ever launched to date is the Helios 2 solar probe, launched in 1976, which reached approximately 252,792 kph during a slingshot flyby. That only works out to 0.023% light speed. so 5-10% is a big step? However even at 5-10% the speed of light still puts anything a long time away, a very ling time! JP |

5% to 10% C is a staggering velocity...it would be such a massive leap forward for space travel it wouldn't be funny. Things would be a long long way off and take a long long time? Stars, yes...but "space travel" doesn't just mean "going to the stars". One of the big problems of space travel is time and resources you take with you...and one of the biggest holdups in sending man to Mars isn't the technical skills needed...just build a big enough ship and whack in enough stuff for the trip...we could do it tomorrow. However, the problem is the time required for the trip...which links to requirements for shielding, food, water, fuel, etc. If you can cut that trip to a tenth of what it would have been with ships "only" capable of 5 or 10 percent of lightspeed, the whole solar system would be opened up to mankind, with anywhere in the system a short hop. |

I have no doubt there is life out there. It may have been a big mistake beaming information out to space and sending evidence of our existence out into the cosmos. If these extraterrestrials are anything like us, they won't be friendly.

The frustration I have is because I was part of a team that submitted a proposal for a more advanced version of this:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...n-4-HOURS.html Instead of the 70 days for the Mars trip when it is at its closest to Earth, try 3 hours. That's an hour to accelerate, an hour of level flight and an hour deceleration. The problem was and still is, how to deal with the enormous acceleration required to get to the 10% mark. Traveling at 29,900 km/s is fine, its getting to that speed without turning the human body to mush that's interesting. Wormholes are a whole different kettle of fish. The idea is that they can be used as a means to traverse vast distances of space near instantaneously all without violating relativity. This is a good representation of one: For a primer on wormholes, the article below is a good starter: http://www.space.com/20881-wormholes.html |

When we can understand black holes properly, worm hole theory would be easier to crack.
What's on the other side of a black hole? And what happens to matter that gets drawn in to them? Stargates would by really useful if the can exist. No real need for interstellar craft. 1 of 3 wishes used if I had wishes. |

if martians landed there spaceship here at a holden dealership, they would say to each other (telepathically of coarse) "this is losserville, lets take over the planet!"
but seriously, if any martians are monitoring these threads , or even members themselves (don't be shy, i think there are a few). well, greetings from earth. and I would like to extend an invitation to you and your family, to a barbecue. we will eat dead cow, and vegetation. and drink poisonous liquid. |

Ever play World of Warcraft or Sims ??? The gold or land runs out, you give up and find a new game We are the same, just a bigger longer version, one day it will all run out Unless we get smarter or find other options Work smarter, not harder (used to be a moto here) Watch Terminator, Elysium or any multitude of movies to get an idea of where we may end up .......

Oh and as a small aside, anyone that can nut out a process of inertia negation is guaranteed a Nobel Prize.

Exactly the same as driving from one city to another two hundred kilometers away in a horse and cart, or going in a Ferrari...both will do the exact same job, both will absolutely get you to your destination...but you're going to have to pack a lot of food for both you and the horse along the journey, as opposed to getting there quickly in the Ferrari on a tankful. |

I've often thought of cannibalism as a cheap food scource during long space travels. How many generations to the next solar system? Recycling is important............

The Breakthrough Propulsion Physics Program was one I kept a keen eye on for the duration: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakt...hysics_Program Sadly it wound up in 2002 and nothing else has happened from a NASA standpoint. |

People ? yes.
I think it was the Roman Catholic Church that had a system of not swallowing anything until it was proven as fact back in the day and sadly a lot of slandering fools have come out saying childish assertions of what they 'think' the RCC was putting forward. Now if they had bothered to look into it all more in depth they would find they are barking up the wrong tree. In hindsight people think they are smart, but are they truly. Yes I thought my school teachers were correct in their bagging the RCC position but I found out that them poor fools lacked depth of the true facts, but never let a good story get in the way of the truth. I think the word is called Bastards, that come out trying to slander the truth and putting forward nonsense, brainwashing all they can with lies and half truths. |
