Woolies actually addressed a similar enquiry on Twitter yesterday and I posted the link to it. Short answer - it’s not a problem; they are allowing staff to apply discretion and common sense.

If you want to stay in the Northern suburbs close to the airport check out Hyatt Place in Essendon Fields, it's pretty reasonably priced, the facilities are good too as it's new, there's a restaurant attached to it and it's a short walk from the 59 tram on Matthews Avenue if you want to go into the city and Keilor Road Niddre restaurant strip is around the corner.

Alternatively Atlantis Hotel on Spencer Street in Melbourne CBD is a cheap 4 star hotel about 200m away from Southern Cross station if you want public transport access.

They'll both be around $200 per night across weekends but sometimes you can get the Atlantis for $90-$130 per night during the week.

Might be public holiday tax involved though.

I got a room at the Treasury Hotel in Brisbane for $156 which I'm pretty surprised about given its next to the casino but accomodation everywhere other than Melbourne and Sydney seems cheap

The evidence (based on previous pandemics, especially 1918), and modelling, both suggest there are significant benefits to school closures. Schools are closing almost Europe-wide.

It's the UK that are going with the controversial idea of isolating the at-risk population and business as usual for everyone else. It's a largely untested idea and the evidence is anecdotal at best.

Evidence FOR school closures: https://www.educationnext.org/closin...public-health/

I dont know about you, but those graphs put up a pretty compelling argument IMO.

Who needs high oil prices and feral Greenies on speed to slow the world economy when we just have a new viral gift from China!

The economic ramifications of this over 4-5 months for the world are difficult for me to fully comprehend. Those people with little cash reserves and most at risk (casuals with no permanent employment and sick leave) will be exposed.

Also reading that the traditional owners of this land are more acutely exposed to these new viral infections- their immune systems have not developed to deal with dirty Peaky Blinder living conditions of UK midlands....

And to help portray a balanced view, evidence that supports NOT closing schools:

http://theconversation.com/australia...they-be-133432

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/10/o...l-closing.html

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local...96f_story.html

And an article that presents both points of view:

https://7news.com.au/lifestyle/healt...xpert-c-747069

My take: the jury is out on the effectiveness of proactive closures. Seems to me that there is evidence that support both sides.

There's no doubt that reactive closures of schools will occur.

Relies on the assumption that kids arent vectors. We know they can get sick. We know it can be spread asymptomatically. It seems logical to assume kids can spread it while being mild or asymptomatic.

Also mentions that while they didnt reduce the number of infections, they did slow the spread of influenza - this is precisely what we are trying to achieve.

paywalled, so cant comment...

If you take the time to read your links, I think you'll find there was no actual evidence AGAINST presented.

There is an assumption (relied on by government) that if you close schools, kids go to the mall. This is where responsible parenting comes in. It's a flapping pandemic. You make sure the kids stay home, you make sure there are consequences to non-compliance. You give police the right to enforce those consequences.

School holidays are a month away (9/4) and we in SA jumped by 50% positive cases in the last 24hrs, if what im hearing is anywhere near accurate, they'll be ramping up closures within the fortnight.
I wouldn't be surprised to see schools close for 4 weeks to begin with and then reassessed.
Children from my kids school are being sent home if they sneeze even once.

I'm in that boat.

I called ANZ last week and asked if there were any options to defer mortgage payments for a month or 2 while the slump in casual work was happening.

NO was their reply.

So I pressed a little harder... suggesting that if I deferred my payment for 1-3 months they could add that to the term of the loan.

Oh, yes, you can do that, I could also have a payment plan, breaking my repayments into smaller ones spread out.

BUT. they will need to report me to the credit rating people as a default.

Much the same as if I simply did nothing and refused to pay.

Wonderful people aren't they... those few months will have the world of difference in a 20 year loan.

All the banking help seems catered to business customers.

Lets see what happens this week... I'm sure I'm not the only one worried about where the next loan repayment will come from.

I'm wondering if that's what they are hoping for - drag things out as long as possible to get to the holidays.

Some private schools get 3 weeks.

Over 80% of people will experience only mild flu like symptoms, and the daily death rate it a tiny fraction of what Hep B is. I saw a post on BookFace and it’s very true, with the way we have fallen for and melted down over this con it’s no wonder they’d never tell us about aliens.
Best comment in this thread so far. Media outlets like ABC and Channel 10 should lose their licence for peddling their fear porn, ABC particularly, but they'll use any opportunity to attack Morrison and the Liberal Government.

Given 80% of people who contract this virus will develop mind symptoms means its not the 'deadly virus' its made out to be.

It's the latte soy drinking left and those who use their mouths as garbage disposal units, drinking coffee, alcohol, smoking, eating junk food, following the Standard American/Australian Diet (SAD), popping pharmaceutical drugs in the belief it will make them healthy, they're the folk who are in the firing line. Yep, I'd be afraid too if I trashed my body and believed that a trip to the doctors will make be better. They're about to have a surprise of a lifetime if they catch Covid-19.

Given MSM refuse to report on any treatment of the current virus this clinical trial will be interesting to follow. Big Pharma have no interest in it, they cant patent something that grows naturally.

How good are they? I'm looking forward to their non flexibility causing a ****load of mortgage defaults and they all flood the market with repossessed houses

The damage that this will cause is immense if we cop huge numbers of casual job losses, imagine if the hospitality industry closes.

Yes and no. I've heard of some stores no longer accepting cash, only card payments.

I guess it's to reduce contact.

We have a trip to Lord Howe Island booked for April. If the LHI council dont lock the island down, we're still hoping to be there. If they do, thats the only way we'll get a refund, travel insurance is meaningless in a pandemic.

I'm calling the CoronaVirus hotline (1800 020 080) right now about my son.
He came home late Sunday with a cough and lots of sneezing.
The sneezing made us think its more a cold than anything else.
But its now over 48hours later, he still has the cough and sneezing, though both have dropped off to a degree. I wouldn't describe him having a fever but he is warm (warm last 2 days here too).
He is home with me for now, I'm pretty keen to see a bigger improvement.

Meanwhile I've been on hold for 1 hour, 7 minutes and counting
