gt40, unfortunately I have 2 badly stuffed ankles (no idea how, drunken accident I think) and after even 50metres of running I have sharp, stabbing pains in both ankles.

That's the good thing about the bike is no impact, but i get what you're saying, and i might start doing rowing @ the gym @ night then.

thanks for that

Any exercise is better than none, but some exercises are better than others...

But again different people like different exercise, and the best one for you is the one you can stick to.

So go for it and try and add some variety to stop getting bored, and to stop your body getting used to one thing.

Good luck with it, I am just starting up again after a little break due to personal reasons, as I am currently in the worst shape of my life, and want to turn things around big time to get to the best shape in my life.

well Phil, looks like you're a jinx! last night my chain came off the large cog (what is the real name for it, i feel im annoying someone by saying large cog). twice... thankfully i figured out how to get it back on, however when i'm in 4th gear on the rear gears it keeps jumping. I have a feeling the derailer isn't setup correctly..

blokes @ work are gonna take a look today. really annoyed me cos i didnt feel comfortable at all on this mornings ride so cut it short.. and feel lazy again.

Also put on a 3led front light and 5led rear. they're decent for $15.
and put on a trip computer, pretty cool watching your speed and distance travelled.

Sorry about that

If it was coming off when going from the small sprocket to the large, i'd say your front derailleur is over adjusted thus pushing the chain to far over the sprocket.

Most road bikes when on the small sprocket will jump when getting to 4th/5th gear, thats the invitation to go to the large sprocket.

Make sure you have your seat and handle bars at a perfect height asweel as this is essential for a proper and comfortable ride. And get your bike serviced about every 3-6 months.

only thing is, it's on the largest (3rd) sprocket when it does it.

i figure its just an adjustment that needs doing.

also, i have 12months free servicing which seems pretty cool.

Look at the limit screws on the front derailleur. One limits the travel outwards and one the travel inwards. It is very simple to understand if you look at it.

You never let on that you were on a get fit kick Bourney.

If you need anything for your bike etc let me know as I have contacts in the industry.

Believe it or not I used to race push bikes, a long time ago.

I have started riding again just recently, but have started on my excercise bike first.

God luck with it, I will have a chat at the next meeting.

cheers Dave.

well my progress has been really good and im absolutely stoked with myself.

did a 18k ride on monday full of sltty hills etc and managed to do well.

The blokes at work had warned me about this 1 hill and said its probably best u just wait at the bottom for us to come back. Anyway, we got to this hill and i thought oh crap... yeah i'll just wait.. then i thought na cmon give it a shot, so i started up this hill, long story short and id scientifically estimate 5 litres of lactic acid later, i made it up the hill and i couldnt have been prouder.

since that ive done rides morning and night and was able to ride into work this morning reasonably easy including some tough hills.

Considering that 2 weeks ago a slight incline had me dying straight away im feeling really good about myself

well riding is going really well. did a 50k ride monday, 30k ride yesterday and usually i cover about 30k a day.

last night was pretty eventful though. I really should try and knock up a drawing to make this easier for people to understand than my dribble, BUT!

I was at a set of lights waiting for the pedestrian crossing to let me cross the road (main road, silverwater road for those who know it).

Anyway, essentially im on an island, with main road infront, and a left hand turning lane for traffic coming behind me, behind me.

I hear commotion and sirens and turn around, only to see a black lexus (unsure of model) clip the gutter a little bit away from me, wobble, then hook around the left hand turning lane, clipping the gutter of the island im sitting on. Then after that 5 highway patrol cars went through and a hellicopter overhead.

So whatever he did pi55ed them off.

Scary bit is, had he not been able to get through the turn i wouldnt exactly be here to post this message, as i would have had speeding lexus on the left hand side of my body and traffic light pole on the right.

Needless to say i almost pushed out a darkie! but ah well all the fun of exercise ay!!!

exciting is a word for it, as the car was coming at me i was just pooing myself, but after they passed all i wanted to do was ride after them.

Unforunately im not the love child of superman and lance armstrong so i wouldnt have been able to give chase.

I do a ride from home (meadowbank) to work (ANZ stadium) then i meet up with a bloke from work and ride out to merrylands and then back to ANZ and then do the same ride after work.

Keep at it SgtBourne, I'm back into it now that the mornings arn't as cold !!
I'm in Putney ride out to Olympic Park many times through the summer, many clubs do a 6k circuit around there at night, once daylight savings kick in there's many groups from beginners to A grade, great fun you should get amongst it later in October onwards.
Anybody can join in and drop out whenever you like, its a hoot riding with a pack of 10 or more, drafting is fun and you can stay on the pace easy.
A nice ride early Sat or Sunday morns is head to Centennial Park (follow Vic rd over Anzac bridge etc) do some laps then head back home (we leave at 6am back home 9amish)
Another nice ride is out to Parramatta Park behind the stadium, do some laps there then back home.

yeah i see the groups doing the ride around olympic park tuesdays and thursdays. i only have a mountain bike with road tyres so no chance of keeping up.

the centennial park ride sounds nice, but have to figure out how to do that.

meat axe of a bike!!! you would stay on roads since you're carrying the little one around wouldnt you? get a pair of slick tyres to replace the knobby ones you got on there now. believe me, you'll love it.

Cheers SgtBourne, thanks for the tyre advice. I do only use it on road.

Adam.

yeah i'd definitely go and see what tyres are available to you.

it makes an insane difference. You won't have as much resistance holding you back, and as far as grip goes i have had pretty good grip levels from what i can tell. Only ever ran into trouble if i've grabbed the brake a bit too hard when going over gravel or something, but that's to be expected, and if you have a youngin' behind you you won't be doing anything silly anyway so it isn't an issue.

Here's the Lexus:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/...330841960.html

I've been following this thread lately and thinking yeah I should get back into it. I haven't ridden since autumn. I usually mountain bike in the Royal National Park (favourite place to drive as well) on firetrails, or doing Campbelltown to Helensburg via Wedderburn.

I bought a $199 Big-W special, Y frame with "suspension", and was thinking of replacing the rims with some lighter weight ones as well as the replacing the disc brakes for larger ones. Already have lightweight Maxxis tyres.

I've been hanging out to do The Oaks run, how long does it take going return trip?
