I've read this whole thread and I think One Six is very sensible in getting a modern safe car to learn how to drive in.. I think everyone should go the same way.. The more P platers and L platers we have in safer modern cars the better.

But in saying that are a lot of stupid P Platers and L platers out there that have these sorts of cars and you end up seeing on the news that they killed their mates in their HSV or XR6 ( no offence to any of those holders here) but I think that sets a bad example for some insurance companies hence why they hack up their prices so high for under 25's.

I looked at a 04 XR6 with 300K on the clock.. hey it's a few years old but at least I know im not gonna kill myself using it ( insurance wasnt too bad either.. Just Car wanted $1143 per annam with insurance up to $17K).. If you do the right things and take the right courses you can drive any car you desire..

You don't get paid at the same level as your manager in your first year as an office boy, so why should you get insurance at the same price as your parents when you're only 18?

Part of being a young driver is factoring in expensive insurance. You need to budget for it, put the money aside and be prepared to pay it if you want to own a decent car.

Everyone is for L and P plate drivers to have a safer late model car and I agree Mark Skaife and Wayne Gardner everyone agrees but then you get to the cost of insuring your child's late model car for roughly $2000 a year to go by the book and not worry about a fraud/rejected claim I mean why aren't they putting as much effort into getting cheap insurance for young people or even have the federal Government set up a compulsory P Plate insurance company albeit no frills with a sensible excess but at least you won't be doing the dodge.
This would benefit a lot of young people for the future and Mum and Dad could use the extra cash on a more late model car for their Kids.

good on you One Six, i also funded my BA XR and i still work till 9 or 10pm 6 nights a week. its worth it in my opinion. at the moment i have about $600 clear at the end of each week to dump into the mods basket. keep working your *** off and enjoy it i say.

I was more referring to the price discrepancy for a young person to insure a new car vs an old car. Sure you can take the hard line and say if you cant afford the insurance you cant afford the car, but in most cases this just sees 18 year olds driving around in cars that are older than they are.

Unfortunetely thats not that case.....

My policy on the below car is $790 per year full comprehensive under my dads name with myself as a unlisted driver.

The excess for a unlisted male driver <25yrs is about $1600 from memory.

This beats paying the $2000 per year if it was under my name + $550 excess if I smash it anyways.

I'm not going to budget for a smash, while it's definetely possible, I would like to think it's not likely.

Cars are relative to the time. My HJ wasn’t a bad car by the standards back then, but that was a while back.

when i got my 05 ba fairmont i was almost 19
bougth it for 16000 and my insurance was 1500 for a year im 20 now and its 960 try aami mate thats who im with and im in qld i hurd they r really good for young drivers

and also around the same time i got the ba i looks at quotes for xr6 and xr6t which was only like a few hundred more
the xr6t was like 2g
keep in mind that i have been with aami since i was 16 using thired party property theft thingy for my old ae9 corolla
i think im a rating 3 driver now
