Having recently shopped around and ended up with both a BA XR6 (sedan) and AU II XR8 (ute), I reckon the XR8 is the pick of the pair; it's a nicer drive, the interior isn't as "plastic looking" and there are better choices out there when it comes to picking up a good car.
All of the BA Turbo's I looked at were rattley buckets of ****, that had been flogged to death and back, we ended up with a low km, well looked after BA XR6 for much less. I too drive my car (AU XR8) for work, to site meetings, client meetings, around site, etc... Most of the guys love it; it's different. |

Any reason you can't get an NA 6? Since it's a second car, then it would be cheaper to buy, insure and run. It would still look and ride just as well for ferrying around people in the city.

Nah not keen on an NA 6. It be more inclinded to go VX Calais before Id go anything Ford in NA 6.
Id absalutly love a T Series dont get me wrong, I think Id end up either replacing the project car or having 2 as the T3s are up there for me as a all time fav!

The XR6T is infinitely better than any AU.

If i wasnt going to mod the car i would take the AU3 XR8. A Red S3, Rebel kit with manual is pure porn. Hell i would take it over a BA Turbo even if i was to mod it. There's something about the last AU and the 220kw WIndsor that gets my blood pumping. Plus with a full system exhaust they sound better than a BOSS imo

BA XR6 imo, but then I do like turbos and the BA shape. AU just grates me for some reason

BA, the XRs had decent seat trim (unlike horrible trim in XT, Futura and Fairmont) and the AU interior is something you'll get sick of (literally).
Off on a tangent, I know. But the BA looks a lot better inside and out and you'll pay less for rego. AU XRs look great on the outside, but once you step in... wooo scary

IMO yeah id go the AU aswell i hate the interior of the BA and id want to cut my eyes out looking at it, before anyone gets shirty ive onwed 2 AU's. It is a well known observation the AU equipped with IRS is a better handler and more fun to drive. The BA XR looks too much like an XT for my liking whereas the AU XR is very different from the base model, plus the 302 is a fantastic engine, yeah sure it isnt as 'modable' are an I6T but for me it isnt a big issue. I guess drive both see what suits you and pick it.

Man this is so easy! The BA is a later model and looks a whole world better than the AU. The AU nearly sent FoMoCo broke for a reason.
Lets not get caught up with the notalgia of the old 302 as well, it is really old school now, is heavy, thirsty and most modern NA sixes would show it a clean pair of heels whilst using less petrol...........does sound nice though! The BA Turbo still carries a modern engine and has more than enough power in standard form. It's not too often a new model is not better than the one it replaces and this is certainly the case bewteen the BA and AU. Go the BA. |

Edit: Sorry for the OT. Anyway, hopefully the OP can find a lighweight trailer for his car or this argument/discussion might be all a moot point anyway. :( |

So is your opinion better than others? We're being asked our opinions , I gave mine so whats your problem?? I'll rest on these facts - the AU was a sales disaster, the BA was very much a sales success. The OP was about AU3 and BA Turbo - the turbo is quicker, whether it handles better is an unknown - haven't seen a direct comparison but I'd put my money on the BA being quicker around Bathurst any day. |

I too, not a typical AU owner, chose the AU particularly on its reliability, driveability and feel. Not its looks. I think the BA is a much better looking car, but i dont particularly enjoy driving it. The flaws of each on the general consensus is that the AU's flaws, many would agree is cosmetic. The flaws of the BA, i think many would agree are its drive.

Hey au owners try and stick to the question no defend au falcons at every opportunity.
The au 3 xr8 is a good car, reasonable looks compared to the base model and 220kw with the 5L was the best they could do at the time. Not a bad achievement to stretch that power out of it in a time the ls1 was tearing them to shreds. But the cavellry arrived with the ba and ford stepped up their game. Let's agree on that. Can we compare a 5L au windsor with a barra 182, yes, can we compare it against a 5.4 3v... Errr Maybe Can we compare against a xr6T or boss 5.4, no way. For the same money its a hands down winner to the xr6T but for about $5000 less the au3 220 is good buying too, ill be fair |

There are subjective things like looks (and sound) and then how the thing drives. Most of the AU defence comes from the AU being a better car to drive and having owned both a AU and BA I'd agree. I like the looks of the AU high series and XRs. The low series dash in the AU is not for me though.

I will say that once you have owned a 220kw AU 2 or 3 XR8, you will love it, it will feel a little special and it will sound awesome.
Iv had mine nearly 12 months now, and I still love driving it, she still feels special and hasnt gotten stale and boaring as my GT-P did.. Theres only 2 reasons I would ever part with it. 1. if I found another one in the exact colour I wanted with a sunroof, premmy sound and premmy brakes or 2. if I upped the ante and bought a T3. A lot of us AU owners are happy to just sit back with a smirk and watch others bag the AU out coz their looks are a bit of an aquired taste, or our engine was designed 50 odd years ago or sales were slow, but we KNOW the truth.. The AU is a winner in nearly every aspect of the driving experience and considering they sold over 200k of them, they cant have been such a disaster.. Outright speed n power aint everything here.. The B's arent that much faster in stock trim and you gotta wring their necks to get it... So, if you want a run of the mill transportation taxi, the B series XR's will do ya. If you want a car with heart and soul and a bit of character and some mongrel with looks that dont set you amongst the sheep, then the AU XR8 could be for you. Drive em both an go with what you like most.

Remember that ad for the pies, the guy in the restaurant sipping his wine and eating with cutlery and the rough lookin blokes on the curb outside peering in through the window scoffing into a pie. Then the pie eaters outsiode says "does he know what hes missing out on?" (looking in the window at the well dressed bloke eating his caviar and sipping wine) the other pie eater says "not by the look of him" |

I don't know why any of you bother with hulk's comments he puts his digs in any time he can about the au just ignore those comments.
What gets me is we are talking about au xr8 here not the povo pack forte so forget the au is ugly rubbish the XR8 would have to be the most different from base model ford has ever done. Anyway did the original post say anything about what looks better as I recall he didn't care about looks so why is it being debated here.
