Even today the people that buy coupes often say that if you only have two people they are fine. Four just embarrassing. So for sure there is a special requirement or appeal that narrows the potential customer base. Just because its available doesn't mean it makes financial since to make it so.
On top of that we are influenced in our tasted by not just one culture. We are very broad and that makes this market very tough when you combine that with the point you make.
If there are to be additional lines of product availability it will be in the areas of growth not niche. If there was a four door version then importing both would change the game considerably because you increase the appeal and target audience. A two door Mustang has too much going against it. The badge for a start, country of origin second.
If Falcon is still here and in what form would dictate what strategy Ford would implement.

It's one thing to make a product available. That happens every day. What also happens every day is that models get pulled from our markets because they don't sell. They are already a global product available in multiple markets just as the Mustang potentially would be. They quietly disappear because there is no demand for them and what demand there is doesn't justify the support required. Out the back door they go with next to no fanfare. Given our history and our preferences it is really hard to see any model mustang make a sustainable go of it and that isn't allowing for the shift towards smaller performance options.
exactly.

however, if we had a population of..... 50-60 million, they would sell the mustang here without question.

What is the front belt driving apart from the alternator?

Also in light of the "One Ford" program and cutting the numbers of platforms & engines I find it incredible that they are continuing to develop the old 5.4 engine - or is it a tall-deck version of the 5.0 in the same relationship of 5.4 to 4.6 modular engine?

From Jalopnik

Quote:
Say what? Yes, the 2013 Shelby GT500 has reportedly topped out at 202 mph on Italy's Nardň test track. If true, it means the 650-hp hellhorse is as fast as a Lamborghini LP 570-4 Superleggera. That's kind of a big deal.

According to MustangsDaily, SVT boss engineer Jamal Hameedi said the GT500 achieved that big number by way of the supercharged 5.8-liter V8's copious power (an extra 100 hp since 2012) and the car's improved aerodynamic profile.

No Nürburgring time yet, but maybe SVT will make an exception to its enduring 'Ring shyness — just this once.

Yeah it would be interesting. Maybe the shocks from the GT500 and new bushes all round. I would be more concerned about the drivetrain. I'm sure they could get it to work. Who doesn't love a challenge.

A look inside the 2013 Shelby GT500′s 650 horsepower 5.8-liter supercharged V8

http://mustangsdaily.com/blog/2011/1...percharged-v8/

It might be easy to assume that there aren’t too many differences between the old 5.4-liter V8 in the 2012 Shelby GT500 and the new 5.8-liter V8 in the 2013 Shelby GT500. After all, the two engines look relatively the same and it’s fairly easy to add more displacement, right? Of course, that’s not the case as both Ford and SVT worked hard over the past year to make the 650 horsepower supercharged 5.8-liter V8 in the 2013 GT500 the most powerful production V8 currently produced in the world. “Anyone who thinks that we just bolted a TVS supercharger on it is just crazy,” Jamal Hameedi, SVT’s chief engineer, told us at the L.A. Auto Show.

As proof that the changes to the GT500′s engine are more than a few bolt-ons, Ford had the new 5.8-liter engine on display at the L.A. Auto Show with cutouts showing the various upgrades that were done compared to the previous 5.4-liter V8. You can see detailed photos of the engine below, as well as a summary of the upgrades that were made to the new 5.8-liter engine.

The most visible change to the updated engine is the new Eaton TVS 2300 (2.3-liter) supercharger that replaces the old Eaton 1.9-liter unit. The new supercharger forces more air into the engine thanks to the increase in displacement as well as the four-lobe rotor design. The supercharger produces 15 psi of boost.

To compensate for the extra air from the larger supercharger, Ford has upgraded both the fuel rail and the fuel injectors.

The camshafts have been gives a more aggressive profile and are now identical to the ones found in the Ford GT supercar.

Ford has added new exhaust valves as well as a new exhaust valve seat. The valvetrain can now withstand a 7,000 rpm redline compared to 6,250 rpm for 2012. The cylinder heads have also been cross-drilled between the valves and have upgraded bolts.

Larger pistons are used thanks to the increase in cylinder bore. Compression ratio has been increased from 8.4:1 to 9.0:1. The pistons have also been upgraded with oil squirters for improved cooling

Like with previous modern GT500 engines, forged connecting rods are used to withstand the large amount of horsepower and boost.

The increase in bore was attainable due to the use of a plasma spray coating rather than steel liners for the cylinder walls.

The forged crankshaft remains the same, although a new damper provides improved balance.

There have been faster production V8's. But this claims current production. What about GM's LS9. Or Beemer's 4.4TT... or Merc's 5.5TT?

CAn't be arsed checking the power outputs of those... but surely humble Ford can't hold this title?

Falcon has a brilliant chassis. Just needs some balls thrown into it. Needs some gutsy decisions made to make it a proper track car... like electronic adjustable suspension profiles. Bigger brakes. Racing bodywork. And other track define options. Hell.... call it a GT-R

1000HP version

Quote:

Shelby American has announced the most powerful Shelby yet will debut at the New York Auto Show next week.

Called the Shelby 1000, the special edition Mustang is based on a 2012 Ford Shelby GT500 and puts out a thumping 950 hp (708 kW / 963 PS) as a street-legal version and 1,100 hp (820 kW / 1115 PS) for the track only version.

"Carroll Shelby is a visionary who has pushed the boundaries of performance his entire life," said John Luft, president of Shelby American. "He challenged the Shelby American team to develop the Shelby 1000 and wanted to unveil this amazing new Shelby at the New York Auto Show celebrating 50 years since he unveiled the very first Shelby Cobra that changed the face of high performance. We will have that very car, Cobra #1 (CSX2000) along with Shelby 1000 on display in our Shelby American booth in New York."

Starting with Ford's 5.4 liter V8 stripped down to the block, Shelby American engineers added new connecting rods, crank and pistons. Then the team gas flowed the heads, upgraded the cooling and exhaust, replaced the supercharger and fine tuned it.

Other upgrades include 6 piston calipers up front and 4 piston in the rear while the suspension includes new struts, sway bars and bushings. A new solid driveshaft is connected to a new 9-inch rear end.

Not just for looks, functional aerodynamic body enhancements include the front splitter, hood and rear diffuser.

A limited production of Shelby 1000s will be built, each numbered and documented. The street-legal Shelby 1000 starts at $149,995 and the track S/C version starts at $154,995, not including the base GT500. A completed Shelby 1000 is expected to be approximately $200,000.

http://www.worldcarfans.com/11203274...--up-to-1100hp

While it is nice for bragging rights I am more interested to see how or more so if this car can put all that power to the ground. Handling would be interesting.

On street tires and Photoshop. Notice how the rear tires show no sign of being in motion. (Shelby has admitted that it's a doctored image.)
