The old girl got a major service today with the mechanic being told if there is anything wrong just fix it.
All he found was a split steering rack boot & a bent front sway bar mount.
Good old AU reliabilty.

I know this is a old thread. But have people changed their minds on the AU 3 been collectable, With no more Falcons been made it definitely changes the goal post i have recently purchased one for this very reason.

Hand built engines with builders name was a personal touch by Ford Australia and hasn't been seen again. Just one of the reasons i jumped at purchasing one........

40 years on who knows in the short term and good clean low K original will always be worth more to the right buyer . A clean T 3 being the pick of the bunch If you could afford it put 1 away for the future .But realistically for me before I croak would rather say I have 1 and I drove the crap out of and had a ball doing it rather than got 1 in the shed wish I had driven it more

I wasn't aware only 350 S3 XR8 manuals were made. where did that figure come from? That's a very low number.

I don't know if they will ever be an investment grade collectible but the price has definitely gone up since I started looking for mine around November last year.

I'll be happy if it's worth what I paid for it when I sell it rather than watching it depreciate to nothing in the driveway like my 2007 4x4 was before I sold it for peanuts.

I was admiring one of these just yesterday. A bloke i know has one sitting in his shed. Hasnt been driven in 3 years. Dont know how many k's it has but other than the dust it looks like it just rolled off the show room floor! I reckon one in that condition will be worth a few bob eventually.

All Older Falcons seem to be a bit up at the moment, there's obviously a lot of interest in them, with the impending demise. I'd imagine that within a year or so, they will all settle back down.
Especially once people look at their "projects" without their rose-coloured glasses.

AU's generally have hit rock bottom, the XR8's will follow.
I'd imagine maybe another decade before they start going back up.

I was actually looking at one at Auction. It was a 2000 model, small dent in the boot. 200kk+
But it went for over $2,500.

I think over time they will be very desirable.

Personally i think they have just about bottomed out. And will be steady for awhile and start to climb in about 8 to 10 years,

Eb XR8's are getting desirable now especially the Sprints

And that's what i think the series 3 will be comparable with

And as always if it's kept relatively low ks Standard with all books and service history they will be the ones people will be after.

I wonder if 25 years down the track people will be saying it's a original z code

It'd be very hard to find an EB Sprint considering they don't exist!!!

I think a good clean relatively low km XR8 in "original" condition with a few option boxes ticked will always be a desirable car. History has shown that manual versions have been more desirable than autos but I think that is changing to a small degree now. Finding one that hasn't had an aftermarket stereo put in it, a set of **** King springs or some other crap modification is getting harder all the time. If you own one and feel the need to modify it, keep all the original parts packed away.

Soon, Sox, soon

I'm thinking about what to make as a project car. I do like the AU series and old Escorts. I would really like to get a Grey Series III, leather, sunroof, Rebel body kit, 2 door. I would buy one if they existed collectable or not !

Highly unlikely considering you have T-Series to compete with.

T series are already on the way up. Once they get unaffordable like XY GTs did people look at the next best thing etc

If you told me years ago you would have to pay 6g plus just for a good rust free xy 6 cylinder shell i would of said your on crack..

It's all about time in my opinion.......

Define Collectable?
Will people pay $100k to have one housed in their collection? Doubt it.
Will they become more sought after and desirable? Yes, I'm sure they will.

I don't think the s3 220 will be regarded as that special, its not like a Phase 3. But as a unique and iconic car, the XR8 will become desirable.

End of the day, don't get one because you think it will be "collectable." Buy the car you love and want to keep.

I sold mine nearly 4 years ago for $6750. Was a good, sound car, needing only minor cosmetic work. I dont think they have gotten much cheaper since then.

What usually happens with cars over the years it's usually collectors or enthusiasts who end up with them.

Not often people who aren't really into them will buy them or if they do they get rid of them because they are alot worse on Fuel than later cars or little things start to happen mechanically etc

So as the car gets more scarce and more get written off etc etc

All of sudden it's collectors enthusiasts who end up with them and basically we drive up the price. Because we love them and won't give them away so to speak.

I mean how many people would own a XY falcon but hate the car ?

It's just a matter of time in my opinion and will most probably come a time I'll say i should of bought 10 of them. As i have said about my XY Fairmont etc

They don't have to be worth 100,000 to be a good investment etc i payed 10 g for my XY Fairmont it's been the best investment i have had better than property etc for 18 years i have been able to drive it look at it cherish it wash it and it's still gone up 400 %
