Word is they sounded so good actually by accident.
They had a 2.25 duel system I believe back to the diff , but Ford had to drop it back to a 2" system to get around the springs and keep clearances for the pipe exit. One of the side effects was the awesome sound dude to the exhaust no being too free flowing and thong slappy. |

Yep one in about 1984 in the wet HO. Just fuelled up. I was behind him. Young, stepped on the loud pedal ,over corrected and changed lanes, onto the other side of the road and collected two grannys.
The other was XY GT mid 90s. I wasnt there, but was told a set of S bends, flicked right then left , then into a tree.

Iv never had any issues with the big tank in my HO on a track or any twisting windy roads for that matter, and I have done quite a few circuit days and longer spirited drives in the hills.

A Phase 3 GTHO weighs a bit over 1500kg dry so add to that the weight of a driver which is forward of the CofG and tends to "slosh about" in corners any effect of movement of fuel aft of the CofG would negated as it would always be contra to vectors opposite the CofG. Buy hey, why let physics get in the way of a good story....... |

IMA, a re-birthed car isn't an original....it's only been recently (last 15 years or so), that people have really wised up to the old tricks when it comes to collectables like GT's and how to tell it's a dinky and not a re-birth.....

PS love how everyone has a mate that had a XY GT HO that they wrote off, yet there is still thousands of XY GT HO's around when only 300 were made Most stories that I have checked out where a mate of a mate had a genuine HO stored in his garage turned out to be rusty Falcon 500's, sometimes a Fairmont, never a GT or a HO

So, as a summary of this thread we have the following;
- around 300 Ho's were made (phase 111) - over time, a large number have succumbed to rust and or damage etc - there is a big difference between a "GT" and a "GTHO" - some like their "HO's" restored - a surprising number like an original that has been used for it's created purpose, battle scars and all - South African GT's are not GTHO's (were any SA vehicles HO's?) - people get annoyed by those who won't sell their vehicles but will not spend the money to look after them (letting the vehicle die a slow agonising death and not allowing others to bring it back to health) I have driven a "Phase 111" around the block and been given a longer ride in one as passenger. I have also been passenger in a pale Blue "Phase 11" driven hard. For me, the "Phase 11" left a greater impression in absolute rawness. Cheers Vincenzo

What pale blue did the xw phase 2 come in? Starlight blue or electric blue I would call neither pale blue
Not to discount your story as i wasn't there But I believe the same thing that the phase 2 was a more raw machine can't say I've been in one though

I still don't think you can beat the sound of a 4V clevo being wound out. Staring out over the shaker and sitting in those big bucket seats.. The XY GT just screams tough. Pity I just can't afford one *sigh*.

This was 1984 and XY GTs weren't that much of a big deal. No problem, next time I will keep my comments to myself.

Maybe the GT discussion is 'Red Hot' today (pardon the pun) because of the GT Nationals that has just passed by.
My opinion of any car - be it GT or not - is that original (the correct meaning) is best, and restoration is a last resort. The Grandpa's axe analogy is brilliant and spot on. Sure it's original, but i've replaced the handle 4 times and the head 3 times.... but it's my original axe....... Whilst it is nice to see a restored car at a show etc... It could have been built yesterday. How much of the car is STILL as it was from 1971. Sure, there is a market for restoring cars, and i'm not trying to take away anything from those companies that reproduce and restore amazing examples of these cars... But the 'real' originals are the best. Full Stop. The true 'original' cars are untouched. They've Survived. And when you see those kind of cars, it is truely astonishing. You can restore a car today, or tomorrow.... but you can't unrestore it. The amount of stories i've heard from people over the years who knew someone who's brothers nextdoor neighbors uncle had a HO... it's incredible....... And I understand why people get caught up in them emotionally and passionately... they are cars that bring out those sort of feelings.... Both for the love and admiration that they've earned over the years, as well as their value. My pet hate is the incorrect and overuse of the word original.... Because so many people have been getting it so wrong for so long........ But it's as difficult as stopping the youth of today from saying "like, you know" and "whatever".... The Bushmans GT story is well documented, as is the Dunlop XY. I just look forward to more of these stories emerging - as it always amazes me that these cars can lay in wait for so long........ I just wish there was a good way of telling the stories on a more official basis......

One of my best mates has a mint XY GT he paid $30k for it 15 odd years ago. I can remember us all saying gee thats alot of money. My mate was saying yeah but I always wanted one.... lets fast forward to 2013 ha ha. but the funny thing is he sold an immaculate XY vermillion fire replica for $44k a few years ago. Ahhhh the irony of it all.

Yep, heard a heap of stories myself. But I'm not always so dimissive due to my own story. Dad ruined a XW GT (Phase 1 / Windsor) while towing a trailer. Trailer wheel grabbed the edge of the bitumen (newish road) and twisted over, flipping the car at the same time. Roof was squashed and once he got it back on all 4 he drove it home with no windscreen. The story I always get to hear is about the red eyes and sore neck. I have pics but they are on tiny slides He replaced it with a Reef Green Phase 2. He now drives a diesel Santa Fe BTW, I love reading these stories about the survivors, I've read the Bushman and Old Red pages a number of times now and still love 'em. |
