I'd rather a Falcon EcoLPi for that price. Same running costs but none of the compromises regarding space and performance.

Picture this. You're driving on the major highway in your state and the throttle cable snaps and cuts out the engine and you've got tonnes of metorite hurtling towards you. Then tell me how likely that is to happen. |

Short answer......40k for a mazda3? Get real. If I wanted small, economical and depressing after a week, I'd spend 18k on something!

Mazda 3 and Falcon are very different. Some may seem the extra 50-70cm in length the Falcon has as a compromise on garage space, the rear space for 5 adults can be a compromise if the person prefers a hatch and drop down seats. This is often mentioned when people start threads along the lines of "Need a small, economical car with low running costs at $x cost to get around in". You will always see the answer: "AU on gas", "BA on gas". Some people just prefer smaller cars, don't need full time seating for 5 adults in comfort, don't need the ability to tow 2 ton and don't want a car that is meant to be a better buy because it is cheap to fix. The Mazda 3 is a sucess because it is what it is. There is a market for that size, that shape, that engine, that style etc. If I were in the market for a 3, a Falcon would NEVER be an option. Totally different beasts.

Well, if its a "cut out" then there is no throttle application...so you slow down...and you coast off the road with hazards on. Just like any other situation.

My dad has owned a BA for nearly 10 years and it too has never had a major issue - fuel gauge not indicating below 1/8th of a tank, which lead to it running out of fuel once, and having had a battery replaced twice ... that's about it in nearly 10 years of ownership. The B Series was a quantum leap forward for the Falcon at the time (which lead it to its COTY victory), incorporating advanced technology such as drive by wire, DOHC + VCT in a heavily updated engine, a new world class ZF auto for the BF, and more. It drove, rode and handled like no Falcon before it. It also incorporated distinctly European design cues - the interior is almost Germanic in appearance (if not so much in feel). That's what makes it one of the best Falcons ever made. Anyway, enough with the thread drift. Would I pay $38K for a Mazda 3? I'm not exactly in the market for a Mazda 3 so probably not, but it's good to see that the top of the range model is loaded with tech. If I had that much to spend and I was looking for a small car, I'd probably buy the Focus Titanium, though.

The Mazda and others of it's ilk may may be practical, economical, blah, blah, blah, but one thing it will never be is cool.

And in 10 years they'll be ten deep at the wreckers and no one will care.

How many 10 year old Mazda 3s do you see at the wreckers? Mazda has proven itself to be a producer of very reliable cars.

Its the fact that once they become unfashionable, they will be soon forgotten. Like an Iphone or Ipad. How desirable is a 1980/90s 323?

I know some of the earlier NA, MA and FE Mazda motors would do the head gaskets but never had any issues with both the old 2002 SP20 and current Mazda 3 my wife drives. The only thing that annoys me about Mazda’s is the 6 months no capped servicing which they are now changing otherwise very a well put together car that will last a long time without problems .

Buy a Mazda today for $38k and in one years time it's worth 10k trade in. Mazdas have no resale value.

The old mans 2003 323 (predecessor to the 3) has 375,000km on the clock and it still starts first time every morning, been abused all its life though through lack of servicing, and its pretty slow these days. I just top up the oil when the old man says the oil light comes on when he goes around corners in the morning, filter gets changed every now and again.
Just started developing a rough idle today. Still on its original starter, alternator and clutch and it survived me learning to drive. Only done a set of rotors, 2 sets of front pads and a rear set of pads in that time. Perfect A-B car for people who don't care about cars, which unfortunately is 90% of people. |

[QUOTE=_Ben;5009949]Because owning an FG is much more logical, for resale give me a fg falcon over a Mazda because I'm Australian and I want to drive a Australian made car not a jap ****** box. And if you love Mazdas that much go live in japan.
