My biggest issue is where to put it on my utes rear window? There is no where that really hides it unfortunately :( May have to get some sort of sticker and have it hidden behind it.

dash cams are pretty useless if you get hit from behind wouldn't you say. or even get side swiped for that matter.

and if you drive into someone, its not really going to be on your side is it.

you know what you do if someone hits you and drives off. you chase them!!

the good 'ol days.

i had a eb falcon years ago and i had 3 people drive up my ***. good thing i had a big **** of towbar on it. completely smashed there jap ****. i got out and didn't really care. hahaah

Wonder if these units are able to turn them selves on from standby / parked, if an impact / collision occurs ?
Some units do but are probably waay more expensive.
Blem, the one I linked to has motion activation, but it comes on at the slightest movement, so I reckon in a carpark, it would just be continually on - not a huge issue, apart from camera battery life (only about 90 mins or so). I haven't used the motion detection for that reason.

As clevo dude suggests, these will not help you in a full on side impact, but of course with 2 cams will capture front or rear impact, plus the wide angle lenses do a reasonable job of angled approach from a distance. Front cam can be set to 1080 (or 720 or VGA - less quality = more hours recorded on the SD), rear cam is 640 x 480, but you've seen the quality of the rear cam footage in my link - it's pretty good.

If anyone who buys one of these needs help with settings once you get it and install it, let me know (PM) - the manual is OK, but not as comprehensive as it could be, but I know my way around this little unit now, and i have both the 720 (an older model), and 1080 version (the one I linked to). Note that I am no way affiliated with the seller, though now that more are buying it, I wish I was!

Not true. It still shows the impact movement doesn't it. It's down to you in that case to get their rego and claim like you would normally.

I like my cam purely for all the entertainment it's captured over the years.

What if the person in front just slams on the brakes because they are agro at you or whatever other reason and run up the back of them. Could you use the footage to prove they were unsafe and unnecessarily caused an accident and their fault? Or is it black and white you ran up the back of them and end of story?

if that's obviously the case on the cam and you weren't tailgating there should be no issue, especially since i'd imagine the aggressor would get out of the car and continue it

but i'm no insurance assessor

Yeah that's how I believe the system wil see it as well but he entered the intersection well before it the light flicked red I would've argued he was going to fast to stop therefore decided to beat the amber, if the limit is 80km and everyone else is doing 50-60km and he's sitting on 80 then it would very much appear like he was trying to run the light, but he may have been simply just going to fast to stop in time and the ute should've waited. The SX does look in a but of a hurry though but that's no crime if he's doing below the limit. I think he saw the ute and expected it to stop (what I would usually do in the same situation and finish conducting my turn even if the lights become red within that time) I was always under the impression the oncoming had right of way unless the light was red of course. But it wasn't actually red with the SX a whopping 3 car lengths into the intersection before the light flicks from amber to red the SX was just driving above the snails pace of traffic and the ute didnt see him I'd be extremely annoyed if I was the sx driver and deemed at fault in that situation. It didn't turn red until he was halfway through the intersection unfair!

but anyway sorry for the sub topic it's a very "grey" situation which is interesting I always thought I could cruise through an intersection and if I get cut off it's his fault not mine, good thing to know.. If the light went red 1 second earlier then I'd say no doubt about it sx at fault, but it appears he didn't run the red (at least I think so anyway).

Thanks for the pics and advice JC ...... will get one as well. You on a retainer?

I can see these being mandatory for cars soon. Wouldn't take much to be built in, especially at the price they are these days. Would save soooooo many arguments.

Why wouldn't you have one? Bit of brake checking vs a truck ........ without it how easy would it be a case of the truck doing the running up someones bum? (little bit of language warning )

What they need to bring out is a twin cam (or more) setup with a separate control box that you can hide behind the dash (so the actual cameras are smaller/easier to mount and hide rather than having a big box on the front window).

I'd definitely look at something like that if it weren't stupidly expensive (hell if the cameras were small enough you could mount them on the B pillars to catch side on impacts, would be good for catching those ******* that key cars or smack you with their doors/etc)

linked from the ebay page of that previously posted dual cam, theres a few other decent looking ones too that are slightly cheaper, that accept any rear camera (so i guess you could go up in quality with a better camera?) - some have gps aswell

[edit] hah i found one thats like what i was describing above - dual separate cams, dunno what the quality would be like though (only being 480 reso cams), little more expensive too - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dual-Lens...bcdc504&_uhb=1

with the BlackVue there are kits that you can plug into your car that will keep power on for the camera to be able to record carpark bumps and so on

This one has a rear camera to mount aswell. I see it working great for road rage, front and rear accidents, non long term car parking at shops and even driveway recording(aslong as you hook it up to a longer power source) as I don't always get to secure my car. It has motion sensors.

So yeah they aren't intended to be used often....if at all, but I also don't intend on having someone crash into me and do a runner before I get their details!

Pretty sure JC just bought all the shares for this cam company

Glad you got your dash cam. I'm still waiting for mine which I paid $7 extra for express postage that should have arrived last Tuesday. They said they made a mistake and sent it by normal postage and will get my $7 back after I tell them when I receive it due later this week.

But still no sign of it. Not happy.

Aust Post are doing some weird things lately. A pair of BMX handlebars I ordered from the UK arrived in 10 days. A set of chrome door handle covers for the GT that were posted on 1 May are yet to arrive (I think I'll be getting a refund on them - the seller assures me he posted them and his feedback rating is high.)

Back on the camera - I downloaded some of my saved files from the cam last week, and just viewed them randomly - one of them was frozen in sections. I reformatted the SD card and it's been recording for a few days. Checked a random number of saved files yesterday, and all looks to be OK. Might be worth formatting SD card once a week since the overwrite function may bot be the best way to clean up old files on the card. Googling this issue seems to be an issue with the SD cards, not so much the cam itself.

Haven't got mine yet, and didn't get a tracking number or is that just for express post?

Also, I'll be parking the car at the airport for a month shortly, is it worth leaving it with motion activation turned on? Or will The battery just drain as if it's on the whole time?

I have had the Navman 358 for the last 6 months, very reliable so far and being 1080P great picture quality, cost me $130.

http://dashcamtalk.com/ is a great forum to checkout if you are thinking of buying one

If you want the best bang for you buck dashcam the G1W-C for $70 is the one to buy, has a capacitor instead of battery and great picture quality.

Yep, commission sent. Someone should be buying a new xr8 soon.....

It has been installed in my wife's lancer. I used a butter knife to push the cable into a rubber flap that runs along the car door opening near the headlining. It was a lot easier than I expected!

So after chopping around on the net looking up cams i ended up on a review from thewirecutter about the G1W, Really seems like a top notch cam, especially the Capacitor version (in relation to minimizing heat).

But when you get towards the bottom they link another cam which they really liked but didn't recommend because they think its a little harder to configure/doesn't have a screen.

After reading the review of it on techmoan.com, i think the cams pretty damn good, and not really that hard to configure. The extremely small form factor would be great for hiding it, seriously considering this one

The Mobius Camera.
Really small, more of an action camera (seems like there was an earlier version that arose in the RC Plane realm) but seems to work wonders as a car cam.

Night time performance is top notch, Day time looks really nice, sound is pretty good, its 1080p/30fps (with 720p @ 30 or 60fps, apparently @ 30fps the FOV is the same as 1080p, in the video review his 720p switch is all @ 60fps hence the narrow FOV). No GPS (not a feature i want), motion sensing was added in firmware apparently.

Seems like the makers actually have an active firmware dev with firmware updates releasing a fair amount.

Quick look on ebay shows the cam @ about $90 with just the basic "shell" mount (which tbh seems like all i'd need, i'd probably just stick it to the bottom of my FPV Roof clock (which would make it hidden from my view behind the review mirror, wondering if i could hide a second one in the rear window under the falcon parcel shelf cover or something, maybe where the stoplight is on XT's?)

Might be a winner for me (i can live without a screen, since its got live video output, i can plug it into a laptop or something, set the angle up and forget)

But still no sign of it. Not happy.

Same here. Bought mine on 17/5 and still not recieved. It's only coming from NSW FFS.
