Sydney to Adelaide in 1988 for the F1 race, in a VK HDT Director, 1300+km in 12 hours (sunset to sunrise). That was a memorable run.

I seem to remember that that idiot slowing down from 150kph because doing that in the unrestricted speed limit of the NT was still getting too dangerous, not sure where the "+" came from? Never mentioned going over 150kph. Pulling up BEFORE going over the 0.05 BAC limit, and towing a trailer the would of weighed between 2100-2200kgs on a vehicle that is rated to tow 2300kgs, with the light load of a fridge and swag in the back of the ute I was still within the GVM rating of my ute
Yeah I'm not an angel, I admit that. I even admit that I exceeded the speed limits on the open road where there was minimal or no traffic. Count how many people drive on the Stuart highway at midnight, count how many people drive on the Calder highway at and after midnight on a weekday. If you have driven those roads and at the time of day and week I did, then you will know what I mean. I made a calculated risk assessment of the situation and decided that there was very minimal chance of coming across innocent bystanders and if something was going to happen I was the only person at risk of injury or death. That is a risk I chose for myself. I always slow down when approaching other cars and ALWAYS slow down in towns no matter how small that town is. I wish others would do the same.

Done kalgoorlie to Adelaide heaps of times in 18 hours was the normal time, usually do kalgoorlie to Ceduna, then onto Melbourne,, Brisbane to Melbourne straight through 20 odd hours, Melbourne to Cairns with a stop between Moree and belyando crossing, kalgoorlie to karratha or port Hedland, Perth to Karratha or hedland

Truck driving in NZ, lower South Island - Auckland 1350km in one go including 3hr ferry ride. 10hp per tonne, hills and 25kmh corners = no cruise control job.

Diesel mechanic, at first smoko, load tools onto truck, drive 430km to mine and rebuilt front half of truck diff which shat itself on weighbridge. After that, drove 50km inland to another mine and fit batteries to loader, then 480ish km back to workshop. Not a lot of distance but a long day.

Last month end of 12 hr shift I get the phone call truck has shat a turbo 280km away. Load up tools and parts and go fit turbo, 2hr job, drive back, 21 hr day. Live for it.

I drove about 1500 km from Orlando, Florida, to somewhere in Ohio. I was in my Crown Vic Police Interceptor en route to the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Ontario where it was built. There used to be an annual meet there to tour the plant. (The plant shut down in 2011 and Ford sold the property.)

Agree for the most part, but when I was 20 I could easily do ten-odd hours behind the wheel. I couldn't even sleep in a car as a passenger back then. Now at 45, not a chance. Six to eight hours max in a day.

Also worth noting that most people posting their trips - myself included - have had plenty of other long trips where fatigue meant an overnight stop before continuing. But sometimes you're just on for the drive, alert and comfortable.

The risk factor skyrockets where you want to push on but are becoming genuinely fatigued... that's when you do need to pull the pin.

Back in 1971 when I was a student I did Bendigo to Townsville (24-2500km) in 34 hours (1 lone driver, 3 hours sleep midway). This was in a 1970 HT Holden, simply ran flat-out (85mph) most of the time. Crazy youth!
I just checked the distance on Google Maps and it said the 2480km would take 28 hours - go figure. I can't see that being realistic.

Back in the late 90s when I was young and wild, I used to drive for work every month from Hirtshals (Denmark) to Nantes (France) with the car full of tools and equipment. www.viamichelin.com describes this as 1780 km, and 18 hours if following the speed limit through Denmark, Germany, Belgium, across Netherlands, and through France. Most trips we were two drivers, swapping seat every few hours. The quickest trip we had was approx. 15 hours, so quite a lot faster than the limit, and no more than 5 minute stops at a few gas stations. Maybe I have crossed most countries in one day by car in this post. ;)

Drove from Adelaide to Perth (2750km) in 34 hours a few years ago. That one was easy.

Did two trips from Sydney to Perth last year (4000km). Did the February one in 67 hours and the April one in 58.5 hours. Each trip included some museum stops and touristy stuff (including a few laps of Mt Panorama).

The problem with each trip was being awake for around 24 hours before starting (fly from Perth to Sydney during the night). Lots of energy drinks and huge amounts of determination. Not something to do regularly.

Sounds stupid on here, but it's a matter of mind control and manipulation. Do whatever it takes to keep awake and alert. Screw up and you die. Seeing the occasional ex-backpackers car crashed on the side of the road is a good wake-up call.

Thinking about sex helps. You then end up with the problem of one hell of an erection all night and day that you can't do anything with, but at least it keeps you awake.

I keep the driver's window down the entire time to ensure that I'm breathing fresh air. Comedy CDs help (ie funny stuff).

Sing along to songs, etc. Pretend that you're carrying some sort of anti-virus medicine that will save the world. If any aliens want to do some kidnapping on the nullabor then they're gonna go nuts trying to figure me out.

Each trip was to bring to Perth a car that I'd bought for taxi use (Falcon Egas wagon each time). Take a sleeping bag and sleep in the back when required.

I picked up a couple of hitchhikers on the last trip. Although I had initial concerns about security (ie them taking my stuff) it turned out to be a good experience. Certainly made the time go quicker. Next time I might put an advert on Gumtree beforehand. Need to find a hottie female backpacker that promises to bonk my brains out once we get there in one piece (ie motivation). There needs to be nudist female hitchhikers.

Sounds pretty dodgy, huh? I put myself under huge amounts of time pressure, and that helps to keep me motivated and awake. I apply all sorts of tricks to keep my brain awake. In country areas I stop at every servo for a drink, food and a leak. That also gets me out of the car for a few minutes and I can update/make sure that I'm not sleepy.

I've done 17-18 hour stints in a taxi (around 700km) and only went home because I figured I should. They're easy compared to long distance driving.

I have a ton of admiration for long-distance truck drivers.

Yes but everybody is different. I know people that are basket case after two hours driving, I am in better shape after 12 hours than they are after two. It just depends on your make up. I also controlled aircraft during an operational readiness evaluation for over 50 hours straight, peeing in a bottle at the radar display and eating small meals while still at the display. I am not saying I am a hero, just that people are different, some are sprinters, some are stayers etc.

I havnt seen anyone boasting at all. If they are I'm sure it's not serious.
I wasn't fresh after my trips but I was far from falling asleep at the wheel. Different people have different tolerance levels. I know how people can fall asleep at the wheel but me myself I havnt even come close. And yeah I was more sore at the end not tired.

Drove my BMW Convertible London to Nice (1300km) in just under 10 hours incl 25 mins on the Hovercraft across the english channel.

Sat on 130 to 160kmh the whole way, felt great at the other end, unpacked the car at the apartment then went for a senic drive along the coast and had a swim.

In 1963 , driving a 1962 ( built June ) XK Falcon 144 CI sedan , 7am start in Brisbane made it to West Wyalong by11pm and had to stop , no 24 hour fuel in those days , last fill was at Forbes/Parkes ? where I saw a light in an upstairs room above a café that had Petrol pumps outside , knocked on door - man eager to sell petrol came out - realised what I had interrupted when his wife leaned outside window wanting to know how long he would be . Roads were terrible compared to today but the XK was able to cruise at 80 MPH. 2 passengers - not capable drivers but made sure I did not doze off , not that you would with the state of the roads.
