Hopped in my manual Honda Euro with 150 kw at fly immediately after that disappointing F6 drive-and gassed it hard through a corner and recall thinking "now that's what I am talking about". Even now I cannot get my XR8 within 15 km of the highest speed I got the Euro going around a certain corner, involved the Honda Euro 4 wheel drift sliding flat- the FGX XR8 does not have the poise to get that flat 4 wheel drift in such a high speed controlled fashion. Rear wheel drives are fun-but a well sorted and good handling FWD is also an awesome bit of kit. Different tools -but if a good tool -fun using them all.

It was that or the old bell bottoms. Long live the RWD dinosaur.

Sounds like you have to have forearms as big as The Hulks to control torque steer in a big 6/hp fwd, well who would've known, tch tch tugger Toyota Camry's lol!!
Why didnt they come out with a lsd stock ie i know $$$ right, but to me thats a driver safety issue, if they did they probably would've sold heaps more, who knows? cheers, Maka

Mine is a second-generation model with IRS (not swingaxle). Once you get used to the weight in the back - and after I put wide rear tyres and a front chin spoiler - it's actually a great little thing to throw around. I can entirely see how the Porsche boys get over-confident to the point of no return ..... |

I love RWD, all my previous cars have been RWD (silvia, skyline, fg xr6 turbo, fgx xr8). I also dont mind AWD cars if i had the funds i would be driving a Audi S4 or Mercedes C43 which are both AWD. I used to think all FWD cars were junk until i drove a Renault Megane RS 275. In a straight line my XR8 was faster but once you hit the twisty stuff there was no way the xr8 could keep up. Totally blew me away.

A proper sports rwd would keep up np, i can think of a few Lotus's & others that would destroy the Megane but costing a lot more $$$ though & not so bfyb as the Renault. For what it is though, the Megane is a remarkable car no matter which wheels are driven. cheers, Maka

Speaking of Toranados and Eldorados, both great contributors for the shade tree engineers to make mid-engined Corvairs. Last edited by solarite_guy; 10-04-2018 at 11:16 AM. |

Yep .. 1965 .. Before Mr Nader's infamous book came out.
His book actually INCREASED the lifespan of the Corvair. Chev was ready to ditch it as a sales failure against "standard" configured Falcon/Mustang, Valiant, etc but shutting it down after Naders book was seen as an admission of guilt, so GM mandated continued production with only regulatory changes. The 1965 model continued until 1969 basically as-is (very unusual for American cars at the time). Quote:
Companies like Crown sold kits to mid-engine V8s in Corvairs ... interesting ... |

Some of those little Alfa GTV's were well balanced cars for their time RWD front engine, rear gearbox.
Problem was most rusted out before any long term reliability issues arose.

Those days were the best. If you were lucky, you got a seat belt in the front passenger seat.
Air con/ power steering and 8 track players were for the rich.
