1960's Chevy had a pipe coming over the axel like normal but it just comes out near the rear wheel poking out to the side of the car down onto the road and you only see a inch or 2 of the pipe. 1967 Impala has such. |

Personally I like the stock sound of a crossflow 6.

Many moons back I had an EH panel van with equivalent of a 186 XU1 donk in it (same cam, Triple CDIs etc)
With single system, it naturally sounded similar to an XU1. Me being ya typical 18yr old lout, I wanted a V8 note. I split the extractors into 2x3 (similar to what Solitaire posted above) then 2 hotdogs each side, XW/XY GT over axle pipes, and XY tips... The resulting note fooled a lot of people too! The performance suffered markedly though!

I just ground up rebuilt a 1974 F100 which has a pre crossflow six and 4 speed truck box (all std) I have extractors fitted with true duel exhaust, 2 inch, oval redback glass pack mufflers, the pipes exit behind cab.
I like the way it sounds and I'm happy with the fuel economy but the engine pings on 98, even running on gas, especially in hot weather (but pings less on gas) . The power is sort of adequate but I cant use even what it does have because of the pinging. I'm a mechanic, I've tried altering the timing etc. I'm going through the whole dilemma now, do I work on improving the early six or build an ally head crossflow, which I know will have more power, wont ping, fit a 2 barrel carb etc etc. But one major factor is the exhaust note the early six makes. It dont think it sounds like a v8, but I do like the sound. |
