I remember building a fireplace in Sandringham a couple of years ago with the client insisting on me supplying them Glenrowan granite. The trip down loaded wasn't to bad.
Taking the left over stone back throught the middle of Melbourne with all those tram lines and drivers, what a sh*tfight. 3 hours from the job to Wallan in the little 10 speed.

A left leg knee injury from sport doesn't help my manual opinion!

I agree though, they can be easy as but I sort of struggle with it now as much as I love it. Hence my view (which is just mine)

Not sure I understand the criticism people make on paddle shifts - they are excellent if done well. Some are great some shockers though.

Certainly far more engaging than the up and down auto option

I hated the ZF auto - was infuriating in manual mode but a great auto in itself.

A quality dual clutch paddle like my DSG is streets ahead. (imho)

I have two manual vehicles, one that I chose to have as manual and one that I didn't.

Base model single cab Ranger's are manual only, I would have chosen an auto if available. The Ranger being the car I drive most, changing gears gets old sometimes. The narrow torque band means frequent changing too. Having said that, I taught myself how to heal-toe down shift in this car.

The Mustang I chose manual to experience the whole V8 manual thing. Nailing a heal-toe downshift in this car is addictive, I could listen to that induction note barking back into the cabin for hours on end. Likewise getting back onto the throttle after shifting up, sounds amazing.

I enjoy trying to read the traffic and just using the gears to slow down. I've come close to rear ending some people but just a dab on the brake is good enough. Nothing like nailing a proper heal and toe shift

I learnt to drive in a manual as back in the early 80s when most people had manuals and my parents were too cheap to buy an auto...

...until after I left home and joined the Army (not sure the two events were related). My mum used to carp on about hating manuals for years but my dad preferred manuals.

It made things easier in the Army, most of the cars were auto but the Landrovers and trucks were manual (the larger trucks were not synchro) and I drove a couple of my own cars with manuals until I met my Ex in 1986. Alas she also didn't like manual gearboxes so when we were married in '88 bought my first auto...which was followed by 4 more before she left me with the kids and rode off into the sunset with a new girlfriend in 2007.

...I ended up buying her a BF MkII auto as part of the settlement however as my car was both reliable and had a towbar she'd always borrow my car if she wanted to pick up anything (or collect anything from my place)...so I eventually sold it and bought a manual Focus, then a manual ST Fiesta and now a manual Hyundai i30N-Line...so no more borrowed cars

It also made it easy to learn how to ride a motorbike, the engine/revs/clutch relationship transfers over pretty well.

My current missus can drive a manual so all good on that front but I have found my kids all drive autos and won't drive a manual. My son has asked to learn as he delivers mail for a living and being able to drive a manual would open up a few more opportunities with different vehicles.

I did try teaching my daughter but my LV TDCi Focus wasn't the easiest car to learn to drive in and she finally bailed at an intersection when she failed to proceed to turn right after numerous attempts from a standstill (the guy behind us thought it was very amusing when we changed seats). She hasn't driven a manual since. In hindsight I should have taught her in my partner's old TDCi Fiesta, the car with the most forgiving gearbox/engine combination I have ever driven.

...the ST would have been harder to learn in, the clutch engaged not far off the floor and it was fairly unforgiving (but I loved that car). Interestingly the N-Line might have been ok, it's a warm hatch (1.6litre turbo like the ST) and it's also a good engine and gearbox combo.

Anyway too late now, she drives my BA Fairmont.

Interestingly the manual i30 N-Line is not that common and lacks a lot of the 'safety' features on the auto that used to be part of learning how to drive on a public road properly. I'd rather drive the car, not have the car try and drive for me.

I have a pretty handy paddle shifter that in sport mode shifts/bangs through the 8speed box in a blink of an eye.
I’m telling you the biggest buzz is through the gears at wot but as mentioned it’s awkward at twisty corners through the gears when the wheel is at 6 12 positions for eg keeping your hands parallel to change - infact it’s crap.
Yes it’s damn quick off the lights straight line But it is no way more fun than getting in my stick shifting slower hand change depress clutch Sprint.
Sprint just kills it for engagement, the feel control aspect is far more satisfying hands down even though I’d be some meters behind in a street light run.
I’m not dragging off the lights for sheep stations but it’s all in the timing.
Had a run against a amg suv and it all fell into place I smoked it in a street light drag much to his dismay.
He tried to encourage another but I knew I couldn’t repeat another perfect launch and just lol’d. My son was in raptures.
Ol skool still holds its own to me.
Porsche realised this from customer base and re introduced a manual 911 not long ago FYI.
Hyper car is another level and small %, not fair to compare to volume sales.
Dfb, commercial box is commercial gearing sucks.

There’s probably about 10 women is australia who would give a ****. Most of the under 30’s wouldn’t even know what a clutch is.

Weekend cars, manuals all the way.
Until recently my dailies have been autos, turn the wireless up, plant my foot and watch the scenery go by.
...that is until I inherited the little Corolla. For such a worn out, hateful little thing it is so engaging.
I forget all the woes of my day and go about heel toeing, short shifting and engine braking all the way home. By the time I've got there sometimes can't I even remember the journey such has been my focus. Even though its taken me longer to get there.
Sad to say the XR50 seems to be a bit of a driveway ornament of late.

At the moment I do prefer manuals but I dont deal with traffic often. When the border was shut I and had to cross I would grab an auto if one was available.

Looking at getting onto a motorbike as a daily so I guess that's still a manual..
