can't find the covid used car price thread, so will put this here:
dealers get creative to try to source used car stock: https://www.theguardian.com/australi...-back-vehicles "The general manager of motor vehicles for Pickles auctions, Brendan Green, said prices are 150% higher – about $8,000 to $10,000 – than before the pandemic." and wait times for new: "Among the models taking the longest to arrive was the Land Rover Defender which has a wait time of 357 days and the Toyota RAV4 which takes 293 days on average to arrive."

Didn't want to start a new thread but thought I'd share, Vic dealer (non-Ford ) selling a Ford Transit Custom 320L Sport, so a five seater, top of the range model, for $71,950 drive away with nearly 20,000km/2 year old van (built July 2020).
https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...20958324/?Cr=0 Ford's website quotes $62,089 drive-away for the same spec....if you can wait to get one...so a $10K premium over brand new and it's already done 20,000km..... I've saved it just to see where pricing goes. |

I don't understand why a buyer would do this, as in pay $40k over brand new......now a business that needs a delivery vehicle, different story as no income if you cannot supply your goods and courier services are just unreliable especially when your clients need next day, before mid-day supply.

Maybe their house just went up 500K in the last year and 40K is small beer to get the Tow Rig They Are Entitled To?

Digging up thread - anyone noticing the covid premium now reducing on used cars?
Been watching a couple at dealers and now seeing reductions in price. Of course that could be just what I am looking at.

Haha, I've noticed the LS listings. Looking at Commodore/Calais wagons that can eat E85 from factory, as a step on my hippy-surfer-petrolhead path down the carbon chain on the way to carbon zero...
You've been a mechanic Franco, would I be up for multiple fuel filters when going from petrol (previous owner) to running it on E85? Landcruisers are still at ludicrous speed in their pricing. And there's so many makes and models (even new) that I go 'I just would not drop 20-40K on something like that, I can't see the value, rather have it in divvies from stocks tbh'.

I spoke too soon! There you go, a cheap Landcruiser. With the non-dusting motor.
https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...13643193/?Cr=8 (separately, was watching Greys for this UZJ https://www.grays.com/lot/0001-10327...wagon?spr=true market bid it up to about 18,800 and it passed in but reserve was not far away. Carsales for similar Kms has private ads in the 35-40's... hence I suspected prices might be softening)

It killed the in tank fuel pump module and also killed the high pressure fuel pump on the engine in about 100km on the highway. I guess she didn't like her first tank of E85 after 200,000km So from experience you'll be up for an in tank fuel pump module and the high pressure fuel pump if its one of the 6 cylinder direct injection jobs |

I buy and sell a few cars each winter as an indoor hobby! Demand has evaporated.

Hehehehe Franco, that's gold. I got into lots of trouble putting 95 in the work corporatemobile back in the day, thinking it would be good for the poor thing. Work fuel card only paid for chaff 91.
Thanks janddbone for that. What is your Rover 75 like to own? Love those things without any experience of them. The KV6 sounds like a great characterful revver on the youtube vids.

I compare it to looking after a same age BMW or similar, although naturally the overall driving experience is different. Some of the trim needs a bit of attention as they age, with glues degrading and foam seals shrinking. The engine is superb for what it is, will see out 7000rpm and sing all the way. Needs some love every 150k replacing a myriad of plastic and rubber objects, belts and the usual. Mines coming upto 300k and has been essentially faultless. They run a five speed Nissan box, which is pretty typical of its breed, however thats been faultless too. On a cruise it will return high sevens in fuel economy and happily run 91 octane. I make sure I am what one would typically expect also, sunroof open, flat cap on and Pavarotti blaring out of its awesome and also faultless stereo. Build quality is great, however they are prone to water leaks around trim, mostly due to shrinking seals.

Since the start of 2020, and of course just before COVID, I have been keeping an eye, looking for a XR6 Turbo ute. I preferably wanted a FG MK II or FG-X, but had my search set to include all variants from BA onwards.
At the start, there were 90 - 110 car up for sale at any given moment. Low milage, clean and unmodified examples of FG, FG MK II and FG-X ranged from $38,000 to $45,000. I nearly jumped on an auto FG-X XR6 Turbo Ute in Aero blue, leather trim, hard lid and only 25,000 km on the clock for $42,000. Circumstances at the time meant I just couldn't commit. Then COVID hit and everything went nuts! From mid 2020 onwards, the amount XR6T Utes for sale dropped to about 60 - 80 cars at any given moment, and prices went into the stratosphere. Those low km/original cars were suddenly a $50,000 - $65,000 proposition. Overmodified, untidy and downright dingy cars had people asking $40,000+ Over the last couple of months, I'm noticing more of these cars up for sale, hovering around the 90 - 100. Prices seem to be slowly dropping too. I still kick myself for not getting that Aero blue example, it was absolutely perfect.

People are still asking dreamer prices. An old guy I do work for had a VY SS manual, 82,000km, one owner. It was silver and in immaculate condition. Had it for sale last June for $25k, no takers for 3 months. Dealer offered him $19.5k. Ended up selling it privately for $21k in October. I thought it would have sold in no time... |

Market is dropping and has dropped but the prime example cars are still fetching good dollars. Still lots of cars that have been sitting unsold for months now.
Low km, rarer, immaculate vehicles still seem to be selling, just taking longer. I'll be listing my two owner, unmodified, 60,000km, FG G6ET soon for $39800. Will be interesting to see how it goes as I'll hold firm on price or just keep it.

a few people said that on the G6E group, but I think 45k would be taking the piss who knows though, weird time to be selling.

Have been watching with derision, a neighbour’s Golf fiasco. 06 Mk5 1.6 auto, only 36K on the clock and a quota of senior parking scars. He’s been “getting it ready to sell” for over three months, in that time it’s probably lost a third of its market value.

Think like a wog, negotiate like an Indian - what you got to lose of it sits up there for a couple months, you don't NEED to get rid of it, you've only got everything to gain, it sells for $45K or $42K it's better than $39,800

This XR6T has been up for sale for over 2 years now.
https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...5619960/?Cr=53 Carsales sale description - Slowly becoming an enthusiasts go to utility. Black on black, clean, lean with low km. Registered till end of Feb 2022. Hmmmm, ok that was a while ago 80,900 km on the clock. Vehicle is in excellent mechanical condition. Read on, it's not mechanically excellent Just fitted a Hayman Reese 2300kg rated tow bar. Recently fitted Flash tuner X4 SCT and tuned by Intune Motorsports. Tuned like it should have been tuned by Ford, 290rwkw and 620Nm, tuned for economy. Nup, not paying for some random persons attempt at being a powertrain engineer Installed front DBA T3 Club spec performance brake rotors and Bendix pads. Recently fitted Michelin 275/40 R18 Pilot Super Sport tyres to rear. Mature owner, meticulously maintained. It wouldn't have clearcoat failure or a blown head gasket if it had been cared for meticulously This Black Silhouette 2013 Ford Ute has had the factory diff housing recall completed last year so it's driving a brand NEW complete diff assembly fitted by Ford Australia. What makes this FG Mk II Ute a brilliant package is the incredible ZF 6 speed sports auto, also found in the Maserati Quattroporte and the Aston Martin DB9. This is an original vehicle with NO after market modifications under the bonnet including original quiet exhaust. Hmm, no, you tuned it, it's therefore not original anymore Original wheels are available with the vehicle. This Ford Falcon Ute 2013 XR6 Turbo has a bed-liner and a rubber mat, cargo net and tie down hooks with an auto electric locking cover and a built in light. FEATURES - 18" x 8" front and 9" rear Ultra-leggera OZ Racing wheels in Crystal titanium paint. - Rear near new 275/40R18 Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres - Front 245/45R18 Conti Sports Contact 3 tyres near end of life. - Ceramic Nano coating paint protection. Long gone if there is clear coat failure - NEW complete Limited slip diff (LSD) assembly, fitted by City Ford Zetland after factory recall. Roadworthy certificate included and 6 months rego so you don't have the headaches of getting one yourself. Price is $42,000. Personalised Plate not included. Not so good, 1. One small repaired stone chip in middle of original windscreen behind rear view mirror. 2. Minor head gasket leak, does not warrant repair yet. Clearly it's worth fixing if the car has failed to sell over a two year period 3. Clear coat lifting on a few small spots on fibreglass hard lid. I'm both laughing and shaking my head with this car and seller. Some people need to get their head out of their *** and realize that the super-dooper-special-appreciating future classic-worth every cent car is actually a bucket of bolts. I'm sure he had been "offended" many times with people offering him realistic prices for his car that clearly has some issues that need addressing. But, I guess he knows what he has, right?
