But the Pads are bigger And then there's the callipers: It's the callipers that give the better braking performance, the extra size of the disc means a bigger pad can be used, and the benefits of using a bigger brake pad clamped by one or more additional pistons in the calliper should be obvious to all. I don't think the difference between AU2 and BA would be all that great. AU2 to Territory would be though as the disc is at least 15mm larger diameter, so I imagine the callipers and pads are quite a bit larger too. HLC - The BA brakes will fit under 16" rims, no worries at all.

Holy ****, those calipers look HUUUGE compared to the AU1's. I'm going to order my parts tomorrow, I hope JC hasn't taken the last of my wrecker's current stock :

He said he had plenty - once again, thanks for the info Matt - I would have been spending twice what I did otherwise.

AU2/3/BA/BF rear brakes will not fit on the rear of an AU1 without an adapter plate between the calliper and the axle housing. At the stage. it looks like a plate of around 3mm to be used as a spacer is required - without it, the face/pad mounting area on the back part of the calliper hits the disc. The good news is that the disc fits with the handbrake shoe etc, so if you used a spacer plate with an appropriately longer bolt, then it should be OK. BUT, I will stick with the AU1 rear brakes. While the BA disc is larger, and the pads look to be slightly wider, the calliper is pretty much the same, so I don't see any benefit in changing the rears, especially as a spacer is needed and I'm not 100% sure on how safe that would be.
So today, instead of fitting the rears, I painted the fronts - it took twice as much paint as required for a series one calliper! LOL.

Thanks for letting us know mate, I'll just grab some slotteds and new pads for the rear then, you've saved me the costs/hassle of getting the BA rears and finding out the same way you did! Cheers.

Any chance of getting this as a sticky thread ?
The brake upgrade question is a common one with AU owners.

Just thought i would point out that as JC said the 16inch rims are fine BUT 15inch will not fit on so you will need to get a 16inch spare. The 15inch wheel i tried was just a steelie and maybe an alloy 15inch might fit depending on the style.
Mines a series 2 and i noticed a differance on the initial Response of the BA setup right away. I have got EBC greenstuff pads on mine with the BA setup and geez those Greenstuffs are in a leage of their own, well worth the 100 odd. Shaun

I got a full AU-AUII conversion from our local wreckers this includes everything needed. I mean everything !!! grand total price of 350 dollars. This was a walk in price and we didnt know them from a bar of soap.
Brakes were not rooted either new pads too. FTG asked 1000 plus freight. |

The only thing i hated about the EBC greens is for the first 500 or so KM they squeeeled like pigs and turned the rims and guards black. But this is NORMAL for the first 500kms as says in the InfoBook that came with them.

Anybody in Canberra or nearby looking for a 16inch steelie, let me know, I have a virtually brand new one available.

Well today i got my brake upgrade done by unique tyres in seven hills. It has got the BA callipers with slotted rotors. Am still bedding the brakes in but so far a lot better. The test will be when i tow the trailer tomorrow should notice a big difference then.

Today upgraded AU1 ute rear brakes to BF Typhoon rear 330mm with single piston (apparently same as territory rears)
All bolts up with the exception of having to get a larger dust sheild |

Well, I have a set of BA XR8 rears that I may just put on and see what happens. Then I'll be forced to do something decent to the front brakes, god knows they need it.

Ill have to keep an eye out for a SH set, i already have the fronts, but find the rear set at $950 too expensive.
Have you done the front aswell? great upgrade for an AU1. |
