The salesman tried to talk me into one when I bought my Husky.

That's a nice bit of kit ..We used a very old JD for yonks at school but was replaced with the Toro Zero Turn about 18 months ago.

Agreed on that ..The cheapest one looks like about 6-7 K . That's more than double of my Husqvarna ..Cost me $2900 about 7 years ago .

Like most manufacturers though Ferris would build mowers for either commercial or domestic uses so hence big differences in pricing .

No doubt they're superseded by now .. Nice mower though. Vanguard is a great engine . seen them in operation more than once .

I have a 26hp v-twin b+s powered husqvarna with the 48 inch fabricated deck. Heaps of grunt and quick mowing although I reckon the cutting finish with the 3 bladed deck is not quite as nice as the smaller 2 blade deck.

Maybe down to the blade length and therefore blade speed. Something to think about. Doesn't worry me as I'm mowing pretty much paddock not a manicured lawn.

Yikes! My dad did that for 20yrs whilst suffering with rheumatoid arthritis, it wore away the bones in his feet, now at 70, they resemble big formless fleshy flippers 🤢

Funny you should mention the Toro, just got back from doing the rounds of the local Town Garage sale and some fella was selling a near new Toro Z Master Pro 7000....

Not cheap .. The school one was well north of 20K bought new . It's a pretty big mower too with 60" deck .

I'm not qualified to use it because I only help do the grounds this year due to losing my usual work from a five million dollars Major Works program that now nearing finishing . It requires a full induction course apparently to let the DoE to train me to use the Toro . All I do is normal push mowing/brushcutting/ trimming . Same thing with chainsaws . I'd need to do the full training course on them to use them . Fair enough I suppose.
If they changed my role permanently I would mandatorily have to do these courses such as being an Education Dep't employee with a myriad of PL courses we are required to do .

Same thing applies with our vehicles . They lease a Pajero and a Toyota mini bus . Until the drivers safety course is done we cannot drive either of them off the precinct other than moving them for washing which I have to do each Monday morning if not booked out .

I have used the local golf club Toro though a few times and it's a ripper to operate .

After some much needed rain on Tuesday, the lawns are certainly taking advantage of the some warmth and moisture.

The trusty Victa Mulchmaster powered through it today.



No need to empty the catcher on this bad boy and I haven't had to fertilise lawns since I have owned it.

Thats interesting, my iphone showed 24000 steps walking a good hilly golf course and that was 4 maybe 4.5hrs.

I can't post pics but I mowed my surburban lawns yesterday being they were only mowed 1 1/2wks ago, I arrived back from an OS trip and easy 2" growth.
Having used shelleys no17 a month ago, my grass is nice dark thick and rich, look pefecto for me.

Indigo, does anyone know how to get rid of that weed, it has a long tap root and it's a bastard, the council put concrete gutters in and tossed this crap soil with Indigo seeds in it.

I have never come across such a mongrel weed as Indigo it's about to take over the whole lawn.

Zero does not kill it.

How olds the zero/ glypho? It goes off over time and with heat or sunlight.
Use a broadleaf herbicide, the type you'd use for clover. Plenty of options there, weed and feed may also do it.

Those weed and feed type of products have a tendency to simply burn off the top growth and leave the root system behind, allowing the weed to regenerate.

Clover killer / broad leaf weed killer should do the trick.

MCPA or Kamba M should do the job.
You can get a 1 litre Amgrow from Bunnings with MCPA & Dicamba in it quite cheap. 10ml per litre. I usually go 15ml just to make sure.
Works well on any broad leaf stuff.
Obviously there is better stuff out there but you start paying big dollars for that.

Sounds like a high dosage rate the commercial one like spearhead do it to. Usually its the surfactant burning the leaf before the chem can be absorbed. Not many people read the rates and just spray a whole bottle over their lawn 'just to make sure' doesn't work like that unfortunately.

I realise we don't know each other but I'm not some numpty that started this yesterday.
I trained in horticulture 20 years ago, worked in commercial grounds maintenance for nearly 10 years and have maintained my lawn and others for just as long using many different chemicals and products.
When I say to make sure I mean that the manufacturers particularly the ones that Bunnings uses go a bit light on in my experience with the dosage rates so I up the rate a little. I find its the difference between it working the first time and having to reapply.
It's something that I've tested out over many years.
Sure I could go and spend big dollars on the commercial stuff and dose it exactly but for domestic use it works fine in my experience.

These are high in iron, which make the lawn super green but also burn off the foliage of broad leaf weeds, leaving the root system behind to regrow.

As per above, ALWAYS apply at the recommended rate. This is something that I always make clear to the customer, ie: more is not better.

great thread, love summer lawn battles with my neighbours!!! I live in outback WA, lawn is kikiyu and goes crazy in summer with the sun, only trouble is it loves a drink and mowing costs more in fuel than my XR8, I have to mow it twice a week, mowed it on Thursday and been at work since and its looking untidy now, I follow a bloke on youtube called Lawn Care Nut, has a garage full of Toro gear and buys and gets given free mowers to use and review. I remember as a kid growing up my old man having a big Victa mower, orange in colour, big wheels on the back, small wheels up front, rear mount engine and belt drive up to the blades, 2 stroke, had to hold 1 hand over the handle mounted air intake to choke it to start and then as others have stated, a million revs a minute!!! also had a walk behind slasher, real big spoked wheels and exposed belt drive up to a long shaft down to the blade which was like a metre long flat bar, 2 inch wide, half inch thick steel with the blade cut into it, lever forward to tighten the belt and engage the blade and a handle trigger to engage drive, Worksafe would prolyl lock you away if used in public these days, just did some googling, Victa super 24 and a Mobilco slasher

So I'm looking at an entry level Victa or Masport mower, both use the same B&S 450E series engine. I have Sir Walter Buffalo lawn, about 120sqm.
Not talking big dollars here, both are under $400, but I've never bought a new mower before.
Is one better than the other?
Is it true Victa are still made in Australia? I'd buy the Victa on that fact alone if it was verified.

Nah mate Victa not made in Oz anymore but is assembled here, I had to double check for I knew GUD used to own them (the Ryco filter company owners as well) as well as Sunbeam once upon a time.

Victa has sold over 8 million lawn mowers in 30 countries. In later years, the company was owned by GUD Holdings Limited, who sold the Victa Lawn Care business to American-based Briggs & Stratton for A$23 million in 2008.
Both of the names you mention will do the job but I sooner the next motor size up.
