To put it into a little perspective, Lewis was caught 50m away from where the La Porchetta pizza chain founder died in a motorcycle accident.

Besides, Lewis has a car he can do all the drifts and burnouts he likes without any police intervention. He should be the last person doing it on public roads.

I like this comment by Ron Walker :

""I think he can be forgiven for this indiscretion.

"I think the right foot felt the urge to accelerate and indicate to people the Mercedes has huge power."

So what.

If you think that was 50 metres away, I’ll buy you a tape measure.

How does someone going through a red light and cleaning up a motorbike in the same suburb make this a this a serious offence?

Lewis spun his wheels as he left Albert Park track in Melbourne where he is racing.

McLaren’s former World Champion was arrested for doing a burnout, making the tyres smoke.

Lewis, who is competing in the Australian Grand Prix, was also caught doing a fishtail, when the back end is swung around during a handbrake turn at high speed.

The F1 hero, 25, was pulled over in his powerful Mercedes road car and charged with hooning – Aussie slang for the improper use of a car – and faces a hefty fine.

Lewis, who had his car impounded for 48 hours, said: “What I did was silly. I want to apologise.”
Either their version of "fishies" is diffrerent to mine or he was doing a handbrakey.

This is a perfect example of how the media get it wrong sometimes, this from the British rag "The Sun"...

Amazingly when you read the comments some of them believe the accompanying video is the incident in question.... :

And I wonder who paid him to say that?

He probably couldn’t care less.

LOL...I did see a snippet of news with an AMG on a trailer last night but ,missed the story..there you go.

The police did do the right thing, and if they let him go there should have been more uproar.

I like everyone here likes a bit of fun but there is a time and a place, cops are everywhere during the event and its not like they wouldn't have heard the thunder from God coming from the tail pipes aswell.

If a boxer walks out of a stadium and smacks some bloke in the head for no reason is this ok? Of course not, but just because he knows how to do it well is no excuse.

Its a pretty funny situation, but one I fear might be the nail in the coffin for the GP here; F1 is that fickle.

+1

Its halfway between my 'dream car i'll never be able to afford' and 'my next car'.
There is one a couple of doors up from my place and one or two at my work. The one at home rumbles past every few days, sounds unbelievable.

This was a comment from the herald sun i think this fella sums it up nicely.

PC gone overboard of Melbourne Posted at 9:55 AM Today
All this fuss over a burnout? What the hell has happened to us. We used to be so laid back and easygoing. Cops have overreacted here. We can't have any fun anymore. If this had happened anywhere else in the world it would be a huge laugh, but not here. What's next - a communist style Internet filter !? Oh that's right, it's coming. How about focussing on the real issues of random assaults and stabbings.

Hang on, this is BS.

If this was any other random well off bloke, deliberately (T/C off!) spinning them up in a public place they would be hammered in just the same way.

What he does for a living should make no difference, and until we actually hear what really happened (was it a fishy, dounut, tiny little tyre squeal etc) then we are just guessing anyway.

If you keep to the apparent facts then this shouldn't even be in the news. Guy does a burnout (whatever), has car impounded, thats just a normal day in Melb FFS.

How dare you post a “common sense” comment from the Herald Sun.

With some of the replies here, I though that I’d accidentally logged onto Priuschat.com, however, even they would probably find this ridicules hoon legislation and subsequent action from the authorities a total overreaction.

So we had the Bingle “shower gate”….
Then the “Hey Dad” accusations, now this.

I wonder what the next “Big News” story’s going to be?

Just because we “gotta” play by the rules, doesn’t make them right.

Have you ever heard of the law of unintended consequences?
