Yes, I've got the Wheels magazine with the write up about that car somewhere tucked away. Very interesting car...worked well, drove great. Possibly a little too much for the average XF Falcon driver of the day who was more into one of two things...basic and cheap family stodge, or luxury like the Fairmont Ghia. It was hardly a time that "Falcon" and "Innovative performance car" went hand in hand in the mind of the general public... (Sorry, he says, ducking for cover...).

I usually do a run of 10 copies and list them on eBay. No estimate of a date yet, within the first quarter of this year probably.

I would like to know how far the the engineers pushed the inline 6? Direct injection, alloy block, dry sump, electric water pump? Just curious what power they achieved out of NA before the pin was pulled. I know somethings will never see the light of day, just interested in the devolpment process.

The Tickford book by Gavin Farmer briefly mentions that Ford developed several 24 valve DOHC versions of the six before the AU adopted VCT as an alternative to supercharging, but found the high engine speeds to not be suitable for the Falcon.

From memory the r concept housed the BAY interior buck? I must dig out some old photos from motors how's where concept cars often had bits off upcoming falcons

The R concept was on display at the Vic Discovery Centre for years. Definitely had an early version if the BA interior and BA style seats.

Yup. Featured a version of the BA interior and staged seating from the Territory and a Barra under the hood I believe? Was a fantastic concept and I think one of the last ever cool ideas Ford Au had. Nice fresh derivative of the AU shape too.
What's disappointing is that Ford AU had so many awesome ideas that never eventuated. At the time of the R5 they also drew up a wagon concept awd au wagon and other things before then they came out with a big on the outside small on the inside boring heavy SUV with an AWD system that was basically a waste of time for the majority of buyers who trundle to and from the school runs. Would have been way more useful in Falcon models!

I visited the R&D building in Geelong on the northwest corner opposite the factory (where Bunnings is now) and they were testing a diesel version of the 4.0.
The EA wagon was also intended to have a 7-seat version with a forward-facing rear seat, which is why the roofline is taller. It would have had a similar layout to a Peugeot 504/505 wagon, or Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser. The prototype was in the Discovery Centre years ago, I have pictures of it somewhere. |

What timeframe was this? How far did it get into prototype phase and what commonality did it have with Barra? Were there any torque/power figures @rpm thrown around and did it have the same turbo/plumbing as xr6t?

It would have been a monster, when you look at the power figures of the smaller 3L and 3.2L motors. Would have been like the bmw and Audi diesels. 170kw and 600nm would have been fun not to mention a perfect engine for the Territory.

Yes, I'd be seriously interested in more info on how far they got with fitting the 3.7L V6 into the Falcon, and how far the 4.0L I6 Diesel development progressed.
I keep hearing stories about the confrontation between Geoff Polites and his successor regarding the cancellation of the Diesel program. Lukeyson

What does it take to turn a petrol engine into a diesel? A Falcon turbo diesel 4.0 i6 engine would be phenomenal, probably be powerful enough to power a semitrailer.

Well the 3.0 V6 in the Nissan Pathfinder TI 550 and Jeep Grand Cherokee make 170kw so Maybe the 4.0L would make 190kw and 650nm. Now that in a Territory or Falcon would be quicker than the 195kw petrol or 2.7v6 diesel.

That R5 ute like so much of the AU program was easily 15 years ahead of its time and looks great now, hits a niche that's selling in 2015.
As for AWD being wasted on a boring SUV - ours with chains tackling bonnet high snow drifts with manic wind, weather and challenging visability and coming through with flying colours - suggests otherwise. Full time (does not decouple at idle) AWD on the SY, great traction control programming and a 38/62 front rear split from memory - works well. Other options that never made it: 429 powered XB GT coupe (AMC story on it once) Bill Bourke special XA 4x4 ute EA 351 Arrow coupes and Hellier Bros coupes of AU - there was something about one of these being factory supported? Honourable mention: XG and XH outback utes, with locking Hydratrak diffs (this diff also in EL GT) - happily these were produced
