This is bang on in my mind. My boot is almost always empty, don't care if it's large or not.
It starts, stops, turns left and right, sometimes it reverses. This is enough of a driver experience for most people. Most people aren't car enthusiasts, they don't care for racing spec cars.

Affordable, reliable, and nice inside.

Toyota tends to lack gadgets, but it's got the rep for being reliable.
Your i30 is full of gadgets and is a great price.

Ford? Well, the rep of Ford, especially the Falcon, is bogan hoon car.
Holden, despite being as American as Ford, have more of a rep of at least being an Australian company.

I think the new Focus, the new Fiesta, the new Mondeo, the new Mustang, will all do quite well, once they're finally out. And if Ford actually advertise them.

It depends in what context you have it.

I would suggest that back in the early 70s, when Ford sold 80,000 to 100,000 Falcons per year, plus 2,000 to 2,500 Fairlanes & LTDs would have been THE days.

Not that she cares how a car handles, her first priority is looks and what colours they're available in.

She bought a Trend.

If you wanted evidence of why people like rear-wheel drive, Mondeo is exhibit A.
Drive experience is antiseptic by Ford’s standards.

The Mondeo feels sure-footed in corners and supple over most bumps, although not best in class based on our preview drive.

Caradvice said:

Overly light and uncommunicative steering.
It’s not quite as sharp as the old car though. The new electric steering is direct and quick, but devoid of feel and feedback and a little too reluctant to load up beyond the realms of urban twirling.

Drive said:

Both models drive the front wheels with a minimum of fuss, helped by an electric power steering system that counteracts torque steer and other distractions, such as vibrations from an imbalanced wheel or jagged road edges.

The system retains an impressive level of clarity to a driver's fingertips, trading perhaps the finest points of steering feel for refinement in a compromise many owners will be happy to meet.

Wheels said: (I couldn’t see any reference to it being in the league of a Series 3 with M tuned suspension)

And boy does it handle. The cohesion of the Mondeo’s dynamic abilities is deeply impressive.

From the attitude of its body and suspension as you start to apply lock to the positivity of its front end and the corner-enhancing involvement of its excellent rear suspension, the Mondeo feels much smaller than its size and weight would suggest.

Fling it down a twisty road and you’ll revel in its poise and adjustability, guided by an electric steering system that feels hydraulic most of the time.

Ride quality and road-noise refinement are two other new Mondeo hallmarks.

From Autocar - UK market knows Mondeo well .

Driving

Thanks to the fact this new Mondeo is part of Ford’s ‘One Ford’ philosophy, more emphasis has been placed on ride comfort and interior quality than the way the car drives. Where the old car was the sharpest steer in this class, the new one is softer and less focused.

That said, the Mondeo is a far more refined prospect than before. It’s still enjoyable to drive, but not as superlatively so as the old car, nor as much as the class-leader, Mazda’s enjoyable 6.

A massive engine range will blossom in the Mondeo family over the next year, but for now the main choice is between a range of 2.0-litre turbodiesels, 1.0- and 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrols, and the petrol-electric saloon-only Hybrid.

3 cyl Ecoboost Mondeo luckily not coming to Australia.

I’m wasn’t doubting what you read in Wheels.

I’m just laughing at what Wheel’s said.

I’ve recently driven both cars and the BMW is easily the better driver’s car and more so with the M suspension package.

What I do like about the Mondeo is it looks good and in most departments it’s a very good car, what I don’t like is it’s way overpriced.

Even if it were cheaper... Don't care. Luggage space? Driving experience? Meh. Value for money, warranty and gadgets is what I (and most buyers I believe) wanted.

My wife drives a Mirage and all the BS people pumped into her when she was pregnant was a joke. You must get a bigger car, you will need the space, you can't fit all the stuff you need etc etc etc. Apparently even a Camry or i45 is too small for some people.

How oh how do Europeans get around in a Corolla as the ideal family car?

Well, the pram fits in the boot with space for her baby bag and shopping goes in the back seat. Or the pram goes in the back seat and the boot becomes empty.

In some cases, less is more...
Each to their own. I value large internal space which, in a well-designed car doesn't necessarily mean large external size.

Octavia is a great family car because of the internal space it gets out of a small package. It's class equivalent, the Focus, fails to do this, at least in the current model.

This may come as a surprise, but there are thousands of people out there who buy cars simply to get them from A to B. One that is cheap, small, has a good warranty, is easy to drive and fits in their garage.

At a guess I'd say that's who the Nissan, Kia etc marketing people are aiming at.

Not everyone wants one that looks and sounds cool

Bingo.
Just picked up a secondhand I Load at $19990 plus gst at the end of last fin year & bought anew Mitsi Lancer GSR at $18990 gst inclusive last Friday.
People at Hyundai spoke of how slow other dealers were to make use of budget incentives.
Also I reckon anyone who bought a Mazda 3 has not driven other cars to compare.
The road noise is awful.

Looking through Russell's stats, in the '2015Q2' stats the Merc C Class is a real surprise, 2nd to the Camry, it's flogging ALL the 'affordable' mid size competitors. Times must have changed; it seems (save: Mazda 6) if you've got a lesser badge you are history.
