They have more of a chance of rising in value than Aussie muscle unfortunately.
A large portion or if not most of the people that hold sentimental value in, and own expensive Aussie cars are boomers who are dying off. More of the younger generations grew up with a larger variety of imports, 4wds, have other interests to motoring or more important financial commitments. The Aussie stuff doesn’t hold the same value to people as what it did 20+ years ago. The demand/price for them will whither away over time.
If I had $1 for every dreamer that thinks their HSV with 200k km on the clock fitted with some tacky aftermarket rims is gonna rise in value I wouldn’t have to work.

I’m no fan of V6s but I’d add the B5 RS4 to the list.

Yeah, my project cars are euros because parts usually isn't a problem (sure there's freight costs, but they're available for normal money!) and the cars are sold really cheap when they're old.
I ended up with old BMWs because cheap to buy, manuals, tech docs, parts lists and software is available, there's 4-5 brands still pumping out OE parts for them (E: ZF/lemforder, sachs, meyle, vaico, ate, febi-bilstein), i6 or v8, zf gearboxes etc.

It's just like working on a falcon when you get to know the earlier more simple bmws - parts at the wrecking yard too, but info and new repair/maintenance parts globally.

E: I still want a 1953 hudson hornet though. I just like the fact they look already chopped when compared to other 1950s cars. I saw a dodge super deluxe on CWM yesterday, maybe that could scratch my itch? Older 48-50 design and is looking like it needs a chop. Any old timers here know if the 1950 dodge/plymouth was sold or assembled in Australia? They had the desoto diplomat here but that's way too off and older in age looking compared to a hudson hornet. plymouth cranbrook ring any bells?

Hmm come on your more wordly than that, you also bought a AU XR6 with the intentions of keeping it, ROI wont be any better.

Those E46 M3's and E49 M5 will never be worth $10k. Ever, I dont recall even seeing high km E34 M5's get below $20k.

There are plenty of E28 M135i for $15k+, so you can do alright with EU cars if you are careful.

I wouldnt touch any of the newer stuff though, the C63's are awesome but $$ for repairs, the V10 M5 is the same and the V8 M3 not much better.

The EU cars have a much wider audience than the Aussie stuff, and even the Oz cars are going to cost decent coin to fix when a 5.4/5.0 has issues.

Really depends on what you want to do, daily it, track car, investment etc

There is certainly a sweet spot but its a myth that older EU cars are much more expensive to get parts for than Aussie stuff. Anything chrome bumper for local cars is getting up there and has been for sometime as supply dry's up.

Ah missed that post, 100% agree.

Should of jumped on the Japanese gravy train 5 years ago for a Turbo Supra, RX7, EVO 5 etc

Don't agree entirely with smoo at all re Anything aussie Falcon etc will die....
Boomers lol, Falcons will live on once boomers are gone, obviously less in numbers but will be worth more imo.....
The equiv euros (exceptions being AMG/SLine/M Sport) will always be affordable, yep parts plenty but never dirt cheap if you wish for quality.
Jap, will have its place as it always will.
For me anything performance specific will always carry on no matter the brand.
People can't help themselves no matter the gen.

When you think about it - that whole car if taken apart could be taken home as slightly over sized excess baggage on the next trip to Japan.

Don't laugh - I did that returning home from Italy once with a huge bunch of spares for my Fiat.

Raised a few eyebrows at both ends but all was above board after an inspection.

For me, an E60 M5 in a heartbeat. Yes, terrible reputation for being problematic and overly complicated, but where else are you going to get a performance V10 in that price range. If its not a daily driver, its not nearly as potentially angst-ridden a purchase.

The previous M5 a much better buy IMO.

Looks better (subjective yes), cheaper, sounds better and not ridiculous in running cost (still would be high)

But yep go for it if want one!

it's just another in a sea of V8 sedans. I dont see the appeal TBH, and would be more inclined to look in the AMG stable.

Fair point re' V8 but they look pretty bad imo.

The previous M5 looked and sounded tough. And manual.

Much prefer the look of the older Evo's to the Evo X also the X didn't get the 4g63.

I also quite like Evo VII, VIII and IX - wicked looking cars.

Very basic too, you've just got a stereo, some heater/fan/AC controls, manual box and a mode selector to change some electronics relating to the driveline.

The equiv euros (exceptions being AMG/SLine/M Sport) will always be affordable, yep parts plenty but never dirt cheap if you wish for quality.

I don’t think they will die, I think the inflated prices for them won’t last, and the dreamers thinking they’re sitting on investments in a well used modern XR8 or Clubsport etc will end up with an expensive shed ornament in ten years time that won’t have people queuing up for.

The point I made with the boomers is they were behind the boom in prices for muscle cars around ten years ago. Living out their childhood/teenage motoring fantasies & memories where they place a higher value on these cars than what their children and grand children will.
What happens when they can’t drive or care for them, or die...
Most of those cars will come to market. Do the younger generations have 6 figures to drop on Bathurst specials and replicas. Few will. Most wont. We’ll likely see a decrease in sale prices for these and this will trickle down to the lesser models, Fairmonts/Premiers Falcon 500/Kingswood etc. while having them compete in price and choice with the more modern stuff as a weekend/holiday car.

That’s also before taking into consideration the rising cost of living. Looming green initiated regulations that will make owning vehicles harder and more expensive.
Also unlike boomers and their parents, a lot of millennial men have no interest in motoring and would struggle to change a tyre or light bulb.
Immigrants and children of immigrants don’t identify with Holden or Ford and see no significance in the models, as traditional Aussies are being replaced due to negative birth rates.

Polyal, one Jappa that is still cheap/obtainable with a cult following and sure to rise in value is the DC2 Interga Type R.
