If want realism, I read that the car chase in French Connection was filmed in New York without permits, so the car chase was filmed a few blocks at a time. over a period of two weeks and all the pedestrians are real. Nominated for 8 Oscars, winning 5 (including 1 for best editing).

Special Squad - how about this cop show series on the TEN network, I think about 1984.
They had a few XD/Es ripping up the back streets of collingwood chasing crooks. http://www.crawfords.com.au/libary/drama/special.shtml cam Australian attempt at "The Professionals", 28 December 1999 |

Metal Skin Totally crap movie, but great car chase at the end - Blown Charger V Nascar. Great sound, plenty of blower whine and screaming small blocks.

I remember Special Squad well. The opening credits were filmed at the World Trade Centre in Melbourne at dusk or night and featured 3 Falcons and the police helicopter in the background. Each car turns its headlights on in turn, followed by the nitesun on the chopper, which lifts off as each car drives off in turn. Great sequence. I chatted to the pilot who flew the chopper for that scene and he said he almost stuffed up that take off.
There used to be a video clip of Special Squad on the Crawfords website that featured the young detective chasing a criminal on a motorbike who drives down into (what was) Museum Station and drives onto a train, then gets off into the city somewhere.

The Getaway with Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, he's handy with a shotty and an old Chev. She's just yummy.
Dirty Mary Crazy Larry with Peter Fonda leading the cops on a merry chase in an old Chevy and a Dodge Charger McQ An older less know John Wayne film that has him in a Dirty Harry type roll. He flogs a Pontiac Transam, and it ends with a wicked car chase along a beach. Worth a watch.

I watched a car film on the weekend.
Redline (1996) Starring: - Chad McQueen (son of Steve McQueen) - Jan Michael Vincent (still sporting his car crash injuries) - Corey Fieldman (the '80s teen comedy film star) - Michael Madsen - Corvette - Two Ford Mustangs - Porsche 911 and 928 - Jaguar coupe There's a whole bunch of car chase scenes in city streets and one awful attempt to recreate the famous Bullitt sequence with the Mustang and the Charger (this time a Mustang and a Jaguar). Jan Michael Vincent looks terrible and his acting is still as bad. Very bad film, very entertaining for wrong reasons.

My vote goes to Bullit. The note from the Mustang is great, especially during Steve's gear changes

Ghostrider is an absolute nutcase, he does some really stupid things on that bike.
The original Gone in 60 Seconds is an awesome chase, the blues brothers is one of my alltime favourite movies, along with the italian job. The older movies are always better for the chases i reckon |

Bad Boyz I - The Porsche & AC Cobra racing at the Airport
Bad Boyz II - The Ferrari on the Motorway GI60S - Eleanor, what else? The Transporter I - Most of it, Transporter II was too unrealistic, and Smokey & the Bandit |
