If it gets too costly I'll just get a second job.

But geez, I really really really like those Excels ..... can you fit a 351 in one of those?

Petrol prices are linked to overseas pricing due to the stock markets and that pricing. If australia had cheap oil (our own) we (Australia) would be out of buisness as it simply would not be worth the exploration of drilling. The oil companies would go overseas where it is profitable to explore and drill for oil. that is why our pricing is linked.
On the issue of my option......give it 3-5 years and the term HYBRID will not be a dirty word as the technology and demand for them will be much better. As a 2001 Ford Escape owner, I look foward to the 2005 or later Hybrid Ford escapes of USA becomming available as a mainstream option in Australia.

Petrol is taxed 38%.. at $1.10/litre for regular.. it'd cost 68.2 cents/litre without the tax. How far down would you hope for them to bring it? If they brought it down to 10%, like the GST is meant to be, it'd be 79.2 cents/litre. That'd be ok I suppose. Still nothing on gas though.. 39.9 for that last time I looked.

Don't forget that petrol has a 38% excise added to the price and then 10% GST on the resulting price - so we are being ripped off royally - paying GST on the excise - it sucks big time...

If petrol goes stupid I might just buy a motorbike.

Then again you prob wouldn't save that much when you factor in the extra insurance and all.

I thought it was 10% GST + an extra 28% excise to make 38%... if its how you say.. that's 48% all up.. unbelieveable.

As others have said if the prices continue to rise, we will raise our own prices. Making it more expensive for all of you to visit the dentist, doctor and even the tattooist. Everything has a knock on effect.

Yep, we are paying GST on the excise - HUGE RORT!!!

Also, your maths are a bit wonky - it is actually almost 52%

Excise is 38 cents per litre, at least they have stopped indexing it to CPI as it used to go up twice a year. GST is added to the total
