There have already been quite a few reports of failed gearboxes. This is the GTR owner's manual:
Good work Nissan! You've designed the transmission as a consumable item. At 20 grand a pop that has got to sting. |

Oh man... the more I read and see about this car the more i'm scratching my head as to who in their right mind would be inclined to buy such a machine...
Imagine the phone call when booking a logbook servce: Yup, grease and oil change, hmm yeah prob needs the box replaced.. brake pads? yeah.. oh and the rotors of course... ummm anything else, give me a call to Ok it... Thanx but no thanx... Would rather a boosted Exige that can be serviced anywhere. |

Lets be clear here, this car is built to a budget, outstanding performance, but it appears to be on a knifes edge in nearly every aspect of durability, what money you save on its purchase price V other equivalent performance vehicles(Ferrari, Porsche) you'll pay back in keeping it on the road.... that's if you use the car's ability.
At first i thought this car would be better as a track special, now i'm beginning to think its better off not going near a track and being used as a hot sunday drive day "pose" car with "potential" where its apparent fragility will be saved by the restrictions created by road rules and speed limits....

It really is just too heavy to be a consistent, reliable track special. Look at its results in the One Lap of America. They aren't too shabby, but they hurt the car doing it. More weight puts a lot of strain on the gearbox, brakes, tyres, suspension.

I'm not sure so don't quote me, but i think it's also a case of new clutch = new transmission too... I'd still have one. *heads out to buy lotto ticket clutching rabbits paw, 4 leaf clover and small budda statue*

The Targa West car looked to have upgraded brakes and weight reduction done. Weight reduction is what this car needs.
I really want to like this car; I like the older Skylines a lot, R32 being my favourite. |

http://www.nagtroc.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=25361 I don't think the car is mechanically as 'bad' as what people are saying, but I think it's wrong of Nissan to provide a product that can be operated a particular way, but void of warranty cover if something breaks? These cars have a 'black box' similar to the Ferraris... they know how you've been driving the car, first thing to remember - do not turn off VDC and use the launch control... or it could be a 20k US mistake!

No, he is correct. It isn't really a Skyline, it is just a GTR.

Given what's been uncovered about the GT-R, I think I'd actually sway more towards the W427 now (if it was a choice between the two).
The last thing I want to do when I take my car to the strip is tick off a box as to how many hard launches I've now done. I just had a slow leak fixed on the weekend, to shell out for 4 new tyres because I ran over a nail...? $25 vs ~$2000. Pass. |

And we thought the W427 was a joke, this thing needs more of a re-build every service than a Hyundai Getz.. Not what i would expect from a 175K Car.
I'd go European anyway. |

This car shares nothing with the current Skylines. The GTR is built on it's own platform. |

Well driving any car to its peak performance will cause damage to some degree. At least Nissan inform you that it will break a gearbox every 20 thousand k's. You know what you're signing up to when you put your name on the dotted line. IIRC the original "Godzilla" ate diffs at the track very regularly.

Melville Nissan are taking orders already, but the asking price is $175,000!!! Mark-up already? A friend in Japan said they are $75,000 over there!

Well on its way to being the most overhyped car ever.
Dodgy track times claims using non standard cars....denied by nissan yet cant be repeated with standard cars (just like the last 'skyline' claims years back that were proved to be poop...breaks if you drive it hard anyway. Its like we have reached the disposable car age! |

Have a look here – it’s only a chat room but it is sobering reading http://www.nagtroc.org/forums/index....pic=25361&st=0 ,
maybe the early gearboxes had a manufacturing fault – Mines burnt out their clutches when they were staring to develop their hot up bits
