After 5 engines I was laughing so much my wife came up to the office to see what was so funny

The bit that got me was "that triangle nightmare you call an engine.."

Far out mate, great work. When do i see the first race of the series?

possible names:

"The way they should of built rx7's"
"my ears are still alive after being next to these things"
"Violence against chickens, Steve says no"
"OMG a reliable rx7"

I like the concept, well done bud to get people thinking outside the circle or triangle in your case

Walt: 1370kg guess. Good choice on the L series motor even though it's not a ford, credit where credit is due the chev motors are great BFYB as it takes bugger all to get them to boogie, and they aren't too expensive. Hope to see some photos though!

You are 100% right there but it was the weight that did it for me.

My engine (From Gilmore by the way- Thanks big time mate) got weighed by TNT and it is 192KG.

Pretty amazing but gotta add starter and alternator.

The triangle nightmare they call a 13B weighed in at 124.9kg + humongous heavy turbo + big solid 50mm wastegate + intercooler + BOV + piping + extra guages and associated wiring to try to stop the stupid thing from blowing up every day.

Bottom line is I am starting to believe all the claims that the LSx does not affect the superb balance of an FD.

The weight difference might not be all that big AND the Chev sits furher back.

Less "ouboard" weight.

Time will tell. I will report in due course.

Damn that 6litre engine for 1500 would have been great. Got any more gilmore?

Well walt, the way I see it, if someone like yourself can see the benefit of this conversion, and four other circuit racers do too, you must be doing something right!!

Hi Walt

How are the RX7(V8’s) going? I see that you clicked on my post that I did years ago on the LS1 forum (I post as 2001 ITR).

This is something that I just discovered. A company that does LS1 conversions for Porsche 944’s
http://www.renegadehybrids.com/

It’ll be interesting to see if anyone does these conversions out here.

They are all coming along slowly!

My L76 engine (converted to L98) is built.

Samberg mounting kit has arrived to make it a simple bolt in.

My 6 / 4 Piston John Bowe Signature AP Racing brakes with 368mm fronts from my BA11 XR6T have been adapted to FD.

New Super Pro bush kit is here

And the beautiful billet Atomic Rex (UK) manual rack also arrived. Made by A1GP manufacturer.

Still debating whether to use T56/TR6060 or Jericho. Holinger Seq a dream but $xzx

I am still waiting for my dry sump from drysump.com

Paid for it 6 weeks ago

Still has not been despatched. NOT IMPRESSED. They are standard parts.

May cancel if Gary does not respond this week

When all parts are here we will bolt it all up.

In meantime I have the roller for sale on eBay and my105.com (because I have found another car I want to race)

If the roller does not sell (IT IS CHEAP! $14999). Fastest FD RX-7 race car ever at Wakefield Park in a race that anyone knows about. 1.04.32

Someone buy it!

A BARGAIN!

An update:
I decided not to buy the other roller. Turned out he wanted Australian dollars and i thought he was asking NZ dollars. Meant an extra $10,000 and I could not justify it. Its just a fun car built to hopefully get some reliability into the awesome FD chassis.

The actual build started this week.

My priorites with the build continue to be
1. Reliablity
2. Improved safety
3. Lower running costs
4. Improved drivability
5. Reasonably fast. 1.07's at Wakefield.

and did I say I want it reliable?

Oh and less mechanical dramas too.

Yeah more reliable.

The dry sump finally turned up today. Heavy sucker but will hold 13 litres of oil plus lines and oil cooler etc.

The John Bowe signature 6/4 AP Brakes got fitted up this week. Had to fabricate new dogbones for the fronts but used the Ford hats and 365mm rotors complete. On the rear we fabricated some new hats and used new 330mm DBA rotors. No handbrake.

Also fitted some 18" Ford alloys that I had from my BA11 Magnet because they go over the monster brakes. I will buy new rims shortly and will be selling the 18" Magnet rims with 240 Michelin slicks later this year.

The Samberg subframe was installed with new bushes and bolt ons from a later model RZ (Same as 1992 but cleaner and not so shagged).

Atomic Rex 2.5 turns lock to lock manual rack installed. Awesome piece of equiptment. Made by Tyrell I believe.

Plan next week is to tidy up some paint then its engine and gearbox install time. And sort the dry sump.

For the record the Mazda with 13BT weighed in at 1267kg with zero fuel, Mazda brakes and lightweight Yokohama rims.

Will be interesting to see what it ends up with the V8, extra roll cage, dry sump, monster brakes etc. Oh and air conditioning if I can fit it in the engine bay around the rack etc. Who's a wuss? I forgot to say I would like some comfort too in enduros. Good enough for the Mosler, good enough for my Mazda.

If its too heavy there is plenty I could take out as it still runs power windows, mirrors, pop up headlights (apparently really heavy) full weight doorlocks etc.

P.S. I will be selling all my 17"s so keep an eye out in for sale section

I will do some pics along the way

Starter motor, alternator, air cond and belts must be heavy?

Where did you get those figures burnz? I know you are an LS guru/fanatic and am not doubting you; just curious. It's good info that was not available/found earlier in the thread when we were researching

I will try to weigh it before install.

Anyone around Strathfield got a suitable set of scales?

What a great thread....

Im moving to Aussie, and just sold my WRX project race car here, and when I move will look at doing another one.

Ive had a bit to do with a few guys in the GT1 series in NZ, used to be OSCA series, and they were running RX7's, 2 were series 1 shape, both 13B's with huge turbos, and another guy, Tony Stewart running an FD with a 20b and huge turbo. I think that was for sale on my105 too....

There was also a few V8 RX7's as well, that ran damn well.

Maybe Ill go down this path for my next project.... Seems like a good way to go!

Would certainly be more fun than my old RS Legacy race car, and what the WRX would have been!

Engine, radiator and gearbox IN!

The HARROP twin MC with adjustable bias has since been removed and will be for sale at some stage. PM me if interested.

It was removed because it was easier to use a Tilton Pedal box rather then try to fit clutch master cylinder somewhere. Common fix with V8 FDRX7 RHD

Yippeeeeee!

Nice one Walt, this car and engine package will be an absolute weapon on the track, do you have a passenger seat in it? if so I bet you could make some money taking people for joy rides.

The choice of LS series engine makes enhancing much easier on the wallet too.

Certaintly does make it easier with crazy deals from gilmore. There is a passenger seat for "hot laps" aswell with lovely aircon if needed, lol.Steve seems like too much of a nice guy to charge but I here ya.

These engines are crazilly light for the c/inches,I remember dragging the thing on carpet myself to the door for the courier. When inspecting the heads for any factory flaws the weight was half of one of my cast iron HQ heads.

Cheers for the funny emails, need to start looking for some to send back.

Thanks mate
