The fire extinguisher in my boat expired, so i bought 2. Put 1 in the car. I have had to use and replace the one in my car. No my car did not catch fire. It served 2 purposes, 1st was to extinguish my brother, then to extinguish his car. Dont wear oily gloves when trying to revive an old car. Backfires out the intake, well, the name implys fire.

yeah a 1kg won't put out a blaze, but if you catch things quickly enough it may be enough to save yourself and maybe your car - or someone else.

I've witnessed a few other drivers pull over assist someone who had an unfortunate visit from uncle rodney while on Wakefield Park, there was a few 1kg's thrown at it, it was enough to keep things from getting out of hand until the fire marshals got to the car with multiple 9kg's

Had to replace a 1kg unit recently. It did the job and put the fire out - a 2 stroke mower that caught on fire.

That was a bit of unexpected excitement.

Always worth carrying an in-date fire extinguisher in the car (even if it's only 1kg version). I was lucky (unlucky) enough to have to use one on old fire retardant bulkhead matting that had sagged towards the cat. Did the job 👍

This is a repost of my old post in the forum back in 2011. Worth repeating here about the value of the 1kg extinguishers. No, it didn't put out a car fire.
But it bought valuable seconds to escape.

I was very impressed with the Missus that day. When those “mother instincts” kick in it is amazing what they will do.

The moral of the story is about the truck driver who did not know how to use an extinguisher. A little bit of training and forethought goes a long way.

finally found mine......










sizing is 2300 mm long x [aprox] 40mm wide. found in an old VF VIP i bought years ago & is still 'full' [dunno what of tho]. refer to this link for a history on it or this link for a general history.

I have always kept a 1kg Dry Chemical fire extinguisher in the boot of my car.



Years ago, was once driving home on the freeway and a car in front of me suddenly stopped in the middle of the road, smoke billowing from under the bonnet, I stopped, jumped out, grabbed my extinguisher and ran over yelling at the bloke not to lift up his bonnet, emptied the extinguisher in the vicinity of the battery, through the cracked open bonnet, which put the fire out, told the bloke to call the fire brigade and left him to it.

If he had lifted the bonnet and I had not been around, the outcome would have been far worse.

Part of my job was lecturing in fire safety.
