After I gave the machine a good descale, I knocked this one up just quickly. I apologize in advance for the presentation. After cleaning the machine, I was just hanging for a coffee so badly, I kind of rushed it a bit.

Im always amazed at how much better the coffee tastes after the machine is completely clean.

neither have I Yeti. I have heard that to do coffee art is another higher level of barista training again.

Tastes good and is better than all 4 coffee shops on campus, and only costs 75c a coffee !!!

I think its not a pod as in a nespresso type pod, but more a round bag disc type pod that you put in a holder / basket device, we had similar at my old place of employment and it I have to say did quite well and like rednose it did better than the cafe on the same block it wasn't fantastic but it was definitely acceptable

Definitely better than any Nespresso coffee I've produced to date

Time to get some lunch as well I suspect as that slice on the side is making me hungry and I'm trying NOT to eat that sort of stuff atm

It is pretty big but makes 20-30 cups a day and has been going strong for over a year.

We got sick of paying $3-$4 a coffee so a mate of mine who works at Lavazza got me this machine and I can't thank him enough.

At home I have a EM6900 with a Compak K3 touch grinder, also makes a decent cup.

Currently using Lavazza's Pienaroma bean but they don't bring enough in so will be switching to their Top Class.

I noticed someone posted not to store beans in the fridge, so where and how is the best way to store them after the 1kg bag is opened?

It takes me almost 3 weeks to go through a kilo !!!

Yeti it's made of oats, banana, a few almonds, organic honey and a little cinnamon.

I've been using 2 X the Big Macona jars, 1 stays on the shelf near the machine the other says in a cold dark place, like you a kg takes me 2.5 to 3 weeks, and I have to say I haven't noticed a drop in quality from the day I pour it in the jars until they are empty

If I'm doing it wrong I'm happy to be corrected, this is just the process I have adopted since I read they shouldn't go in the fridge and I have found it makes a difference as I was finding it bitter towards the end when I was storing in in the fridge

We have a Nespresso at home only because its quick and easy.

I was using grinds before that and it made a better coffee, just has more depth.

But nothing wrecks my morning more than really wanting a good coffee, going to a shop and then getting one that is watery, bitter or to hot...really ticks me off.

Ive cut down to two a day though.

yea that was my theory on it, we had the jars in the service office so I um recycled them (I actually got about 6) I use 2 for beans and another 2 for cafe snacks, I'll take a photo of my set up on the weekend

it is amature hour but it does me quite well

Exactly, there's nothing BAD about it, it just doesn't have the depth

as mentioned, a cold dark place is best. doesn't need to be ultra cold, just kitchen cupboard or pantry is fine.

personally, if you could store it in a container that has a one way seal in it that would be better. most coffee places sell just the resealable bags in 250g, 500g and 1kg sizes.

i order 1kg at a time. lasts 3 weeks which is close to the limit for fresh coffee anyway. lately i've just been leaving it in the bag it comes in (merlo package their coffee in the right bags anyway) but i was dividing the 1kg in to 2 500g lots so that i wasn't constantly opening and closing the 1 kg bag every day. it does keep it fresher but not enough to notice when you are having milk coffees.

some more tips,

always let your machine warm up for about 20min. most machines will be say they are ready to go before that (all lights on) but best to let them warm up longer.

lock your group handle with portafilter in, loosely into the machine during the warm up period, so that its all warmed up as well.

pre warm cups at the same time, sitting them on top on the cup warmer.

i always use filtered water in my machine. it won't scale up anywhere near as bad.

As i said before you shouldnt store beans in the freezer or sealed tight in containers because the CO2 gas cant escape. this ends up giving the coffee a very bitter taste and if you smell the bag of beans it smells like arsse crack!

Single wall basket? Anyway first impressions. It looks nice and seems to offer some good functions such as hot water, basket has multiple holes not just one.

First coffee from it was foul, bitter etc. It is not giving a nice uniform stream, just seems to drip in the cup util halfway through which I suspect is no good by then. My puck was still watery and sludgy. They give you a cheats frothing wand, that can go in the bin. All it did was froth my milk to oblivion and when I put it down the bottom to heat the milk, it just kept frothing (now I understand the washing liquid effect)

Looks like it is back to squaare one. Where I had the sunbeam mastered very quickly, this is a new ball game. Tempted to go back to my cheapy lol.

I'm addicted to Vietnamese coffee - in particular a blend called 'Saigon Phin Daklak' from a really good WA importer I tracked down a number of years ago - primarily a blend of Highlands Robusta and Peaberry with and a hint of soy. Delivers a nice strong, smooth flavor with mocha and vanilla tones.






Use traditional low tech equipment which is basically a single cup drip filter but it really does make a nice strong smooth coffee you can brew anywhere.

I didnt know woolies stocked pods that suited Nespresso so I am really keen to find out (+ I hate the postage system on nespresso)

They carry a few different brands. Not as in-depth as the Nespresso range. They just have "Dark Blend" etc sort of names. I'm pretty sure I saw Gloria Jeans pods in there the other day too.

You can pick up small grinders fairly cheap now. They are a good investment if you like experimenting with coffee!

For something different I went to a cafe in Glenelg a while back whose only coffee technique was using a siphon coffee maker.

Its actually a really cool system and I tell you what it gives you a big kick.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but coffee out of the breville is terrible. I am not getting a nice flow or correct colour, I get flow from one nozzel and spitting from the other, as far as watery puck goes, I think it is just a symptom of cheaper machines and the double wall basket (know the difference now) because if I let it sit while I heat the milk, it continues to slowly drip coffee, but then the puck comes out dry. Given that when I force just water through, there is always still water i the basket when I remove the handle, my assumption is that it is just a symptom of the basket, nothing else.
