all the 308s sound like they have PVC pipe for their exhaust.
I have heard some sweet LS2's though.
I love the BOSS !

WINDSR's 5.0L XR8 is probably the best sounding injected 8 ive ever heard. but cant beat the growl of old-school carb-fed mustangs, GT's etc

After a couple of mods to my exhaust, I no longer even bother with the radio and even in cooler weather I've usually got the window down. It just sounds so deep and bloody unreal. Talk about getting attention.

Out of these I gotta say the "BOSS" is it. Rumbles at idle and clears it's throat up high. The best sounding road car I've ever heard was a mates XE ute with $40,000 of 351 clevo under the hood, to hear this thing killing rubber at 7000 rpm was to die for (still gets the blood pumpin 12 years later). The best race motors have got to be anything in a fueller, give a jellyfish a horn!

Holden 5.0L for me..

My dad had a VS SS, was great.. Wish we still owned it, best car we ever had.

Next on the list would be the AU III 220 XR8... those things sound good to.

Boss I hardly notice unless it has some herrods work or its getting flogged, on idle they are very quiet, same goes for LS1. _2:

TE/TS50 I can't remember which one, but I heard one once in Melton take off from the lights to 100kp/h and it was the best sounding V8 I've ever heard.... ever! And I hear plenty but not enough of those!

The Holden 5.0's do sound pretty good though, I must admit. But I saw a beaut EL Fairlane V8 the other day and it was awesome, such a deep/lumpy idle and just roared as he accelerated! Wow.

I chose the Boss 260, however close second is the holden 5.0 V8.
We've have many through the nineties and im partial to them. They sound great where the windsor sounds oldish and tired.... (not all obvoiusly)...

If any of you are old enough to remember the Group C cars of old, Dicks Greens Tuf XE was just putting it simply, "F##king Awesome" To hear him coming up the mountain in the Top Ten in 83 is one of the greatest sounds I have ever heard, that with the 84 XE at Oran Park in Saturdays practice. That thing could turn the numbers, and sounds tough.

oh yeah, remember it well. I was at Bathurst with the "red roo pipe" DJR XE and that thing was pure music.... unlike the rotaty of Moffit which was enough to give you a headache after about 2 minutes.

If you have a copy of Bathurst 84, in the midst of all those V8's on the limiters seconds before the start, you can still hear the annoying chook cooker of Moffatt's over them all.
Talk about ways to ruin pure music....

A saw a mafia-spec full-size merc that was either late 70s or early 80s the other day... Sounded nasty on takeoff (quiet, but you just knew it wasn't something you'd take on in your daily driver)! I didn't know they came out with V8s... I want an oldskool Merc now :evilsasmo

What about Rover v8s? I have heard quite a few real nice injected stroked 5.0litre rovers and 3.9 4.0litre engines sounding fantastic!! (with extractors etc of course)

Can't say I've listened to an injected Rover V8 but I love the sound of Triumph Stags (carbied though).

Hi Dave, it was probably a 300SEL 6.3L (68-72) - worlds fastest sedan pre XY phase III - and they do look like 70's cars or a 450SEL 6.9L (77-80) that you saw. I own a 300SEL 6.3 and it's got to be the worlds best bargearse sleeper...so unassuming with a healthy 587Nm

They do sound good and are still probably more technically advanced than an LS1 but they don't sound as good sadly.

The 6.9 mercs are slower than the 6.3 surprisingly, both engines are bastards to maintain.

Merc 6.3/6.9 and new 5.5L V8's produce a sound LS1's can only dream off. LS1 below 4000rpm sounds identical to a 6cyl.

I meant go as good. But I wouldn't go as far as a sound they can only dream of though.

I once herd a V8TT Soarer and can't shake the sound it made, Words just can't come near describing the magic sound of this car.

But on injected V8's i have always liked the sound of Holden's 5Lt's, they might not have been very fast but they always sound good up them.

The 6 litre chev in Duggan Balancing - it's a displacement boat. I think it may be turbocharged now, but it used to scream that hard, that you never would have thought that it was a v8.

I selected Ford 5L. With the right exhaust the little windsor sounds tough - deep and loud. Its as if you can hear every cylinder firing - fantastic. The best sounding version of the windsor would probably have to be the 5.6L version in the T3.

In terms of the best sounding V8 its definitely an angry, cammed, big revving clevo. My old neighbours had a replica XY GT with an angry mofo of an engine. It was so loud you could hear him coming 2kms away. ******en awesome.

The Holden 5L can be made to sound pretty good too with a decent set of pipes. For some reason the LS1 either sounds good or crap - dunno why. The boss is not too bad but its missing something..
