It depends on how you define "classic".

An XY GT or SLR Torana are highly desireable classics, and they have the pricetag to match. They are bought for their performance characteristics, the badge, to fufill a fantasy/dream, along those lines.

But at the same time, an XB Falcon 500 is a classic too. It's the quintessential family car of the 1970s and tidy examples go for $10k plus these days. People are not really buying them for their performance or the badge, but because they represent something from a bygone era, nostalgia, childhood memories, etc. It takes people back to that time.
In the same way, many of the big Aussie sedans of the last 15-20 years may become classics in the future if they last. Who'd have thought an XE GL would ever become a classic? But they are well on their way. I could see somebody paying a tidy sum for a well kept EB Fairmont one day.

I wouldn't laugh. It's all relative. 30 years from now, we'll see.

The reason I say this is look at what base model X series cars go for, in particular those in the 60s and 70s. Just a few years ago you couldn't give them away. Those cars weren't rare in their day either. It will happen. It's generational.

Have to agree with that. Mate had an HQ Kingswood (okay, not a base-model Belmont, but ....) around 1979 with a 308 / 4 speed / 3.36 LSD drivetrain and the tacho + gauges 'GTS' dash and buckets.
It was viewed at the time as a poor-man's Monaro (ie. laughable, but good enough for an apprentice) and now it would be a desirable car.

Anything V8 powered. Especially Ford as they don't build many now, unlike Holden cranking out shedloads of VE SS sedans and utes, they're bloody everywhere!

We'll all be driving economy focused boosted 4s, hybrids, or fully electric cars in 30 years, and petrol will cost a small fortune so most V8 owners will have thrown away their cars by then making them rare.

that's the word.. anything can become a classic with age, and when remaining numbers of a particular model finally get low enough that demand overcomes supply, their price starts going up again, regardless of how common and unspectacular they may have been in their day. And I think models that had a reputation for being average or unpopular or problematic will shrink in numbers more rapidly than more successful models.

All this is totally subjective of course, but 80's X series had rust and high fuel consumption issues, 90's E series had motor and electrical issues, AU's were deemed a little ugly.. all these things together with the cars being very common at the time surely contributed to a trend of updating to newer models with the assumption that the humble XD or whatever it was would never be worth anything, the cost of updating is more viable than the cost of maintaining etc.. if everyone has the same idea, it's not as silly as it sounds, the XE, XF, EA, AU etc could all be classics of the future.

I've made the mistake myself, discarded an XY in great nik in 1998 for peanuts in favour of an XF.. sold my 1982 XE 352 Ghia in top condition for $500 in 2006.. then again in 2008 I virtually gave away my EB Fairmont 5lt beast as a trade in for a BA.. all of which I regret

The HQ 308 Kingy in my previous post was traded-in for a badly-repaired series 1 Jag XJ6 so the silly bugger could ponce around nightclubs wearing a beret, impressing the up-market girlfriend with the 'prestige' ride.
He got traded-in of course, and then got real and bought an XA wagon. Ahhh, youth.

I dunno what's more interesting, the trading of a solid car for a prestige wreck.. or the bit about the beret

I'll assume that is a tongue-in-cheek comment, so will persist.
Imagine a skinny, awkward youth (ie. me) in cream moccasins, powder-blue safari-suit trousers, with a matching fake-satin shirt in scarlet trying to get lucky in discos in a town with about 10 men for every girl.
Didn't for some strange reason .....

And unless the girls were knowledgeable about extractors, camshafts, and air horns and very interested in them, the conversations tended to taper off pretty quickly ..... Tragic.

A prestige car at the time it was new doesn't neccisarily automatically mean it will be worth a motza in years to come either.

Hell, look a the price of Rolls Royce Silver Shadows from the late seventies and 1980's...you can pick up the damn things for $20,000.

...but when was the last time you saw an LTD from the late seventies? Would be worth today more than that Rolls Royce if it was one fitted with a lot of options, as they usually were...say a 351, FMX box, leather interior, electric everything, etc.

Something like a BFII FPV 5.4lt with the 302. Or the Cobra, I have heard stories about people who owned the original Cobra and bought the new one with matching build numbers. Dunno how true the story is, but it's be pretty sweet to have the matching set.

The cheapest Rolls Royce on carsales: $13,100
The cheapest Fairlane on carsales: $600

Number of Fairlanes on carsales for less then $13,100: 205

Says it all really.

Narrow the focus down to the G220. Quite a nice package. Executive express sleeper.

Helps that I've got one so I've got some idea about what they are.

How about F100's? They're starting to appreciate in value. I know a guy who's taken a gamble and let the rego lapsed and shedded his 1980 F100 4x4 351 Clevo manual XLT long wheelbase with factory canopy, air, and power steer.
He didn't drive it much anymore, and was considering selling it, but after cleaing it up realised it is in perfect condition and has been very well looked after by the one previous owner before him (190,000km on it). He owns it, it owes him nothing, so he wheeled it into the corner of his big shed and will only give it a run now and then.
He says maybe one day he'll stick it on historic rego or something, but he might just wait and see if values increase. It's already worth way more than the $3800 he paid for it back in 1995.
Future classic? Who knows? As I said, it's all a gamble.

I may seem biased but even if i didnt have one, XE ESP V8's will be the next classic, if not already there. Last of the Clevos, sporty and modern suspension (for the day) combined with great looks inside and out.

Saw a VT HSV GTS 300 the other day on the road, nice car and will definitely be a classic one day and of course all the HSV Monaros.

I'll add to my list the EL XR8, all T3's, all F6's but especially FG and FGII and as mentioned earlier the FGII supercharged GT/GT-P/GT-E
