You have to be pretty lucky to see the platypi. More often than not the little buggers just won't play ball.
I think I've only seen them twice in over 25 years!

As far as the Crystal Caves ad goes, most up here probably feel the same as blueoval and his mates - cringeworthy to say the least.

Yes, the Flintstone mobile, a suzuki or something covered in fibreglass to look like its made of rock.

There are some nice drives around Cairns but during tourist season you barely crack 60 on them, treacherous in the rain but.

China Eastern starts direct flights to Cairns next month so you beat the rush.

Managed to do the Atherton run without any real hold ups! Lots of motor bikes passing but would have been better with a decent car! Great drive through there.

There's some great run's around Cairns - the Atherton Gillies H'way, across to Mareeba then down the Kuranda range, or the Port douglas road, going up Mount Molloy, across to Mareeba and down Kuranda range .. I love fanging it up and down the range in the F6 - shame about the roadworks at the moment.

Also Gillies is better for early morning runs cos apparently caravans aren't permitted up the Gillies, less traffic.

Gillies can be a lot of fun but be careful.

If you have never driven it before or do not have a lot of genuine experience in mountains you may find you run out of brakes even if you have a so called "performance" brakes.

It is windy, steep and very very long with no real escapes if you do get into trouble.
Going up is much safer than going down as gravity will be your friend not enemy.
Also be careful in the early morning of hidden wet patches from overnight dew. Remember you are in the wettest part of Australia and up high enough to be inside clouds.

Gillies isn't all that bad...

Me and my mates used to go up every weekend to go swimming at lake eacham.

Mind you, we've had some sketchy moments...If you go up at night, and even in the day you can cheat a few corners.

Just watch for undulations on the entries and in corners...Had a nice bouncy bouncy one time in my old XR6.

Now if you want a real range, go check out the rex range.

At the right time, the Gillies, Kuranda, Rex and Palmerston are all great drives!
Each of them very different and keep you on your toes!!!

Yes once you have driven it a few times you know what to expect. First time can be "interesting". I drove a "variety bash" car (XP Falcon) down it a couple of years ago along with 150 others. More than a couple ended up with stains on their seats.......

In the old days the Gillies was one way at a time, there were gates at the top and bottom, you had 45 minutes to get up/down or they would come looking for you, and it was closed at night. The spots can still be seen, and there is a water tank/creek and pulloff bay about half way up to refill boiling engines.

Up until about 5 years ago it was all a 100 zone as well, not that that was remotely possible for most sections, now 60 even in the limited overtaking lanes.

Caravans are NOT banned on any road around here, (unfortunately in some cases as they wont move over). The only banned vehicles are B doubles and wide loads are restricted to certain times on the ranges.

Motorbikers can be a menace especially on a nice weekend morning it looks like Phillip Island in GP week. I have also seen pushbikers and roller bladers, they are even worse.

That's why I like Behana Gorge, it's a bit of a hike so not many people go there. Unreal spot too!

Actually I was just reading about that, we're at Pt Douglas this week Palm Cove next week.

Hey Dave, we didn't get the Hyundai i30.

The nice Europcar people upgraded us to a VW Golf. Once I figured out how to change the language on the driver display to English things went much better.

It's not bad, averaged 6L per 100km so far!.
