You only have to look out to sea from the Haypoint and Dalrymple Bay terminals to see whats happening. Less than a month ago there were at least 20 ships anchored out at sea (as it has been for quite a while). Unless they are anchoring further over the horizon, I couldnt see no more than 5 the other day. |

Not in the mines as such, but I had my pre employment medical today for a gig with westrac at their new facility in tomago, NSW. Pumped as, can't wait to get in there and learn all about big boys toys.

At the end of the day resources is still doing better than anything else in this country..unless your working for centerlink.
Things go in cycles, unfortunately the "unskilled" workers are given the flick before anything else..happens in all industries.

The big problem is the mining boom has been carrying the country. If it goes pear shape we could all be in trouble.............

Last in first out, that is the luck of the draw unless you excel. Many have come and have opted out, those that have persevered have reaped the rewards and will for times to come. Don't think that the mining game owes you anything, such is life. .

I was employed as a Reardump operator on dayshift... currently i drive a loader on Nightshift..
I escorted my truck off site 3 weeks ago personally. I either stay on the production loader with this company or get transferred to another site? I would like to think it was a promotion lol... |

Got a call back again about my Roy Hill Project application and it was no good. However, got a call back from the 2:2 Gas Mining position. I have an interview on Wednesday with the HR manager, workover supervisor and I believe the site manager?
Seems like they were impressed with my resume, now I am getting nervous about the interview. Any tips or advice appreciated - especially info on what type of questions you have been asked in interviews. My last interview was over 5 years ago. |

Smart casual attire, stay calm, tell the truth, don't fidget, bring copies of licenses/certificates and some writing material and you'll be OK
Where/who was the 2:2 gas position? .

Well done Druxr6t. Will have to go through this thread a bit more thorough when I get a chance. I would like to express some interest in working in the mines somestage soon but seems like winning the lotto trying to get a job. Well thats what Im getting from my boss. he's been trying for the last year trying to get in and now that my apprentice days are almost numbered would like to think that there's some chance of getting in somewhere.

I was pretty stoked I got in! Start date is early November. Having my trade behind me was a big plus when I went into the interview, even though the position didn't need the plumbing trade - it was highly regarded! I only just finished my trade as well, actually - got competency based completion so I could finish it early. Have a look into it, if your boss is happy with your performance (and your 4th year) - you can get signed off as competent! Also, big thanks to all the information posted in this thread. Not sure how many times I read through it - but it did help a lot. |

Going through some interviews currently with a few different companies for an auto sparky apprenticeship.
If all goes to plan (ha) and I get more than one to pick from what are people's opinion of contract miners vs machinery dealers? In my case, I'm hoping to hear back from Leighton, MacMahon and Westrac(Cat). From my questioning so far, Leighton and MacMahon appear to have site based opportunities earlier (from ~12 months) and Westrac have said more likely 3rd year. Each has their advantages I suppose, any thoughts?

I just started out at Tom Price about 8 weeks ago...Storeperson/Yardie in the MEM workshop.
Loving it so far. Yeah it's not a skilled role...but the money is good and I have a engineering degree to fall back on. Oh I'm residential also. Anyone else in TP??

Been trying to get a start in the mining game for a long, looong time, applied through Compass Group as a bit of a gateway to a mine site, ended up attending one of their interview/information days, got an email to do an online Santos induction , then I had to do a medical.
Here's what I want to know, I did the medical, I had the flu at the time, feeling like crap, did the physical part of it which nearly killed me being crook, after I had my blood pressure checked which was on the high side, which they said having the flu wouldn't have helped. Also coz I'm asthmatic they wanted me to be on an asthma management plan. So they gave me a referral to see my own doctor about getting my blood pressure rechecked and also have him put me on a asthma management plan, Blood pressure was fine and he said it was no doubt because I was crook that made it too high.. So, a report was sent back to Compass group that I was all ok, so basically good to start, 3-4 weeks later, I was sent an email saying I was un-successful in getting the position, why would they put me through all this and a medical is usually the last part before starting and not give me the job.... I've contacted them to only ever get told "we'll be in contact in due course".. Also, I have applied for numerous positions with them since all this, and nothing... Is there such thing as a do not hire list ......
