well in the past year I have been made redundant from 3 mining jobs. 1 was in the prep plant the other was in the Open cut and yesterday I was made redundant from my job as a Underground fitter. nothing will pick up until at least February once they get rid of the carbon tax

I reckon any bugger who works underground deserves every cent offered. I don't think I could do it. That's 3 in a bit over a month..........

I wont ever budge from opencut ... 4 and 1 is the norm at the moment unless you are in management...
Then you get 10 and 4 ... Much safer above ground... |

Did nearly six years in the mining industry as a fixed plant fitter after I left the Air Force in 2006. Did some FIFO to the Territory, shutdown work in the desert and was on staff at both Cataby mineral sands and Ravensthorpe Nickel.
Gave it the flick six months ago to go study to be a nurse. Can't say I miss it.

Its very very tight at the moment. Things are gaining momentum but I wouldnt expect anything decent until 2015. 2014 will be about signing things off at the cheap rates we have now...some companies quoting below cost just to pay finance etc.
Get into LNG for the next couple of years then coal will be back.

Is that standard at most sites in qld? We do a 7 day fortnight in the valley. It's a pretty common roster here

Polyal our office staff do 5/2 (mon-fri) as you said but nearly everyone else is (operators, fitters, chpp) do the 7 day fortnight. It's not a straight 7 on 7 off but we're home every day/night.
We're only a smaller pit but going ok. What Car 3/1 is what a mate was doing before got his current job. He's pretty much on 2/2 now as a fitter. Not sure what site he's at but it's in qld

Im seriously looking at becoming a super (a goal) one day instead of management to get the roster, or just find a company that has 7/7 for engineers....
Im new to the game but did a short stint in underground a year or so back. Was a very very different environment.

Still chasing the dream, Resume was typed professionally about 1 month ago to try and help me but still no success, Its got me buggered what's holding me back, Grader, dozer, haul truck, excavator, loader, roller ticket along with white card and several big company inductions. Shame its so hard to get the required coal tickets in NSW. Just keep chipping away I guess !

Wouldnt say QLD is banging away. Its slowed right down in alot of areas.
I think its just starting to slowly, very slowly pick up with a few projects kicking off. But the pay is nothing like it was 2 years ago.

Day rates of $650 are not uncommon now, whereas they used to be north of $850 By banging away I meant it is the only performing state in Australia atm, just take a look on SEEK, every second job is for QLD, just got back from there myself after 6 months as there is nada here in the West, electrically wise. .

I have been on $**** a week since i went on Income protection over 18 months ago ..
I have still applied for many jobs but yes it is quiet for the moment and 2015 seems to be the gravy train for employment opportunities... Last edited by Road Games; 04-03-2014 at 08:20 PM. |

WTF...how much did you pay for the income protection? I thought that was for injuries and stuff like that?
Labour rates are down, and sorry fellas but they were seriously out of wack. Some of these bonuses are crazy too and why we are an expensive place to dig...but I digress.
