serious question. who pays the excise and when? is it really the servo when they buy in the fuel, or paid in arrears on what they sell?

yes but not for the reasons you state. the price of crude has gone up sure, but nowhere near record levels, and yet pump prices are higher than ever?
don't forget - all the fuel at the pumps was bought at the lower crude price. even the next lot that's still on ship on the way here. And if anyone thinks they oil companies actually pay anywhere near the spot price then think again. The next six month's supply price has already fixed on the futures market way before any war 22c cut on excise is not to be sniffed at, but the real problem is the oil companies profiteering here, not the government overtaxing us. and I can't even believe I'm saying that. |

The estimates have this cost at $3b for the 6 months. It is breadcrumbs in the total budget. Quote:
Hence why they generally won't pass on the cost saving until that fuel is used. It would be a huge writeoff they would have to cop. But it will surely go up quick because it is all profit Essentially the bigger the turnover of the tanks, the quicker it is likely to go down. Last edited by MITCHAY; 31-03-2022 at 08:44 PM. |

no drop in diesel at all yet. I guess that reflects the slower turnover at most servos

91 remains at mid to high 190s here in eastern Vic. Thankfully, I don't use 91. And rarely use 98 these days.

whats got me is how many people are stupid enough to believe that:
1: the government is doing anything except buying votes 2: the government is the reason the price went up

20cents cheaper a litre is $12 saving for a 60l tank.
I don't get why everyone is excited over the 20cent drop? All that's going to happen is in 6 months the price will sky rocket. The only people laughing right now are the oil companies. Crude hasn't even even hit record prices yet, it's not even that close.

Was speaking to some random old bloke in Taree at the motel I was at, he said one of his customers fuel costs has increased by $1.75M per month just on the higher diesel prices.
We're all wearing that at the counter when you pay for goods at the shops. If anything this should be a proper kick in the *** to everyone about the importance of fuel security and alternatives. I don't agree with the drop in excise, its a vote buyer that hurts us more than it benefits. |

How come diesel hasn't dropped?
Quite a worry that as little as $10-$20 saving at the pump could actually buy votes.

I guess it's just the result of having life so 'easy' for so long, people aren't aware of how global issues can effect us locally. I reckon we're pretty similar to Americans, particularly people from Melbourne, the world stops outside of Melbourne metropolitan area. Had an interesting discussion from people from Eastern Europe, Croatian and Polish people, they said they've never met people so clueless as Australians, we don't want much but we also have zero clue about the world outside of our coasts. A lot of people forget fuel prices were only lower because of Covid in the first place. They initially had more supply than demand for fuel for passengers.
So as the demand increased, we needed more supply. Well the OPEC cartel controls this and keeping supply low jacks up the prices either deliberately or because they need people to actually do it. While the war between Ukraine and Russia will add pressure for sure, it was always on an upward trajectory. Inflation generally is and it shouldn't increase prices overnight. The fuel here in the system has already been bought. It's all a vote buying, this whole ****en budget is. The government said themselves that cutting excise won't achieve anything. Then they back flipped and did it anyway because we're in a cost of living as well as a khaki election now and the budget position did improve quite a bit so they can absorb that excise cut easy. Unless we produce our own or hold significant reserves, we have **** all influence on fuel prices especially since all our fuel is seaborn supply. Almost all our transport to deliver goods is by road. I can go in deeper on the accountancy tricks but thought I'd keep to topic. |

I'd like to know how much trains have increased their fuel budget by. I know in the Hunter Valley they assume worst case scenarios of about 3000L/100km. It's more like 1800L/100km on a normal day. |

I believe that one was actually enforced not so long ago
Jokes aside, those of us outside it, far from reveling in uncrowded surf, found that everybloody with the now-compulsory spare time took up the pursuit and we were even more crowded than when Melbourne came down visiting. Be careful what you wish for is the moral I guess

Inner east, ULP now $1.70.
A sleven owner once told me that their 98 was fixed to be 16c more than ULP. Well that's gone out of the window it seems. Still paying $1.90 to $1.95 for 98.

We are surely clueless as a mob, but unlike Americans, most of us at least have a passport.

$1.65 "special" unleaded at Mobil, inner east. Didn't stop over to check out the 98, but I'm guessing it'll be around 1.80.
Brent hovering around $110, so looks like excise cut is having its desired effect.

Last time I filled up was $231.9.
I usually fill up when I get down to a 1/4 tank but then I thought **** it, drain this tank and live on the edge Filled up with 98 at $198.9 so the excise cut is definitely filtering down |

Well, I've spent a lot of time on the Gold Coast, and South Brisbane in the past 30 years... But yeah, came to Canberra in '74 at age 2 "and a bit" - moved to Kambah in '75... And there was nothing more south than my house, as a 3yo.
Not sure I could afford Kambah now though, but Tugger's life, where I am now, isn't so bad, really. |

We are seeing $2.14 again for 95 .Put $50 in the AU yesterday. My local and only servo (AMPOL) has 98 , 95 and 91 .,
95 which I use in the AU and 98 in the XR6 has been high $2.20's to low $2.30s here . Not grizzling because for lots of places prices are highish all the time but hopefully one day the 95/98 here will be under $2 again ... |
