To be blunt I use very little from uni in my job. No doubt the background is there, and the theory is there, but until you see it then you have no idea.

They dont teach anything related to mining at such at uni, well at the uni I went to in VIC. The industry just isnt there.

Be kind GT-0733..I pretty much consider myself a first year apprentice!

it's ok mate, i wasn't bagging you guys. i was just suggesting our mob employ too many of them. most of the cpp grads are metalurgists, when all the work they do on experimenting with fines circuits and magnetite recovery has been done to death over the 30 odd years this plant has been operating. the current downturn will see a few of them leaving though.

Yeah I kinda figured I wouldn't use much of what I have learned. I've applied for many grad jobs and get knocked back due to grades actually :/ which is annoying since my GPA is 3

Mate its a horrible gam to play (grad jobs). Im not joking, I kept a spreadhseet with the amount of app's I was doing. Use your uni hand book to get an idea of who is out there.

Simple fact is at the moment not many are hiring. My company has not hired mech eng's in mining since I started (two intakes).

Id be hitting up the west.

Google your head off for companies, many I found and got through I have never heard of before.

Yes the grade thing is a killer, I dont have a great average but what I did have was experience. I worked for 12 months during uni, did vacation programs etc..that is equal weight if not more than decent grades. It shows you can atleast last the 3,6 or 12 months.

Good luck..keep chipping away. Its a bugger of a time, I dont even know if I have a steady job at the moment and Im in a program!

Just wanted to share my current situation with you guys here, to get feedback on what you would have done etc..

6 weeks ago I got offered a fifo position at Roy hill, pay rate was given, it included all penalties and overtime etc, with all camp facilities provided.

I was told then that it would take a week or two to get everything sorted out, like I said that was 6 weeks ago.

I then get a phone call last Wednesday, saying the position I was given is no longer available but they still want to offer me another position, now with a flat hourly rate, accom supplied, but no meals supplied, reason being that my employer can't afford it.

I had to say yes, as I have been sitting and waiting for 6 weeks and was (still am) flat broke.

I got flown up on Friday.

Turns out that the accommodation provided is owned and run by the same company that I'm employed by, so I'm struggling to see how they can't afford meals from a place that they own??

It's playing heavily on my mind that I'm getting screwed over a bit here.

seems like a hard deal. most mining camps are like prisons and costs about 4 bucks a day to feed each person, we used to have heaps of grads coming through doing there few months as a trucky, few months on blast crew, few months in the mill, few months in the workshops etc, but they've cut right back, we got one poor bloke who has just been put on hold and is now a trucky til further notice, been with us a couple months and doing our heads in, he a typical uni grad, not a miner, he belongs in an office with the rest of the shiny boots

Spoken like a true bonehead....everyone would be better if the industry grew up a bit. Which is happening now with a massive reality check.

Yep, there is a lot of controversy about it, one of my OHS class mates did some work for Adani in India and he was saying they're after a few OHS people with diploma and preferably Cert IV in training and assessment for their venture here when it becomes up and running.

Which has peaked my interest.
