Holly crap some bloody very nice bikes on here makes mine feel like a big w special now.

Below is my new first real bike. Though i start with a commuter bike for now then work my way up. What do you think?

Canal and Pemulwuy is a good run. You can get to the M7 pretty easily by dropping down in to the top of Wetherill park too.

Wouldn't be the nicest place to ride during the week, but on the weekends the roads are empty so it is easy as.

What have you bought yourself, bike wise?

I wouldn't even contemplate going out there during the week, remember that I drive a truck for a living so I know exactly what it is like out there. I go early (6.30) on Saturday and Sunday. Bugger all traffic around nice cool air as well.

I had been looking for a bike and came across this on ebay. The guy had bought it online and had an accident at work and hurt his back. He had held onto it for 6 months butt he couldn't ride so he sold it. He said he had never riden it so I took a punt. Ended being only bidder got it for $280 so not much too lose I thought. When I got it the tyres still had the rib of rubber around the middle of them.
It is a Reid bike they have a few stores along the east coast.
Alloy frame carbon forks Tiagra groupset and Alex rims. Quite a nice bike to ride will do me for a while.

I can relate to what blueoval said regarding my body remebering. It remembers that it didn't like hills when it was 20 and still doesn't at 55

Great price for that bike mate. I would have bought that too if it went for that price. Nice work. Just got to get out and ride it. Hopefully the bike fit is suitable for your body.

After some shoes and cleats. Been told mountain shoes are the go. Any recommendations?

have done the job for close to 2 years now.

mountain bike shoes have the cleat recessed in to the sole so its easier to walk. to be honest, you get used to walking in road shoes pretty quick.

Well thought l'd check in and tell you all how the bike is going, its a good piece of gear and fun as to ride although the gear changing of late has gone downhill, witch means to say l've probably been riding it way too hard as the crank bearings need replacing as well although l did just recently convert to a tubeless tyre set up witch is well worth the cost especially doing cross-country style riding like myself i'll see if l can get some current pics up that l took yesterday for you all.

front tyre is Bontrager and rear is maxxis, both good in there own way, next upgrade will be something sold by shimano

MTB cleats are good as they are easier to get in and out of if you're just starting out.

Plus the shoes generally have the cleat recessed, so you can still walk around as if you're wearing normal shoes.

I personally just went straight to road cleats and haven't had any issues, but it is always a personal preference thing...

Hey SgtBourne would you say its worth while getting cleats for my kinda riding as l was just going to get some nice grippy/big pedals and skater style shoes as that work great for me in the past, or have the times changed?

You can get Skater style shoes that will adapt to MTB cleats and pedals.

Couldnt agree more but came across this and it looks alright.

I had to but my bike in for warranty job and im into my 2nd week now without a bike. Hoping it will be ready next week.

It is a completely personal choice. I can't stand riding without being clipped in, but then again, that's just me.

Being able to get power on the upstroke, as well as the downstroke is a massive bonus.

Other people would want to be able to transition from riding to walking, without feeling like they are in reverse high heels

If you're just wanting to potter about town, ride to the shops and then walk around, then I would say getting clip ins is a bit much. (Though as pointed out above, the MTB cleats are perfect for such riding).

RE: Tax Trainers, my boss has one and we used it during the Easter Show period where we don't have the luxury of getting out for a ride. And for what it is, it is brilliant!

However, as said, nothing replaces time in the outdoors, but if you're strapped for time, it is a great investment.

You don't really get power on the upstroke as at high cadences it is not possible to pull up from say 7 to 11 o'clock.All you can do is unweigh the leg to reduce resistance for the other side to push down (rather push in circle ) .
Having said that I ve been riding clipped in for last 20+ Years - for me it is about power transfer and feeling as one with a bike.

when you ride uphill, esp north of 10% gradient, you really appreciate being able to pull up.

I did say high cadence :-) I am avoiding anything that steep and generally race in what suits me which is mainly crits and flattish handicaps :-)
Pulling up in low cadence situation would be used in track acceleration from standstill or in preparation for a sprint (short duration -high power) - in a long climb you ll get pretty tired very quickly if you try pulling up on every stroke.

Mr.NiceGuy, I did a quick price comparison with all your components from Chain Reaction Cycles (CRC) and you would be saving at least $300 including delivery.

I have bought many many items from CRC or Wiggle, and both have been outstanding, great prices & quick delivery. Check them out.

There are many more overseas companies eg. ProBikeKit, Jenson, even Aussie Sellers Cell Bikes or Torpedo 7 have better prices than eBay.
