A stock-looking but lowered XW station wagon.
In white. I immediately wanted it. |

Helping a friend move house today and had to head out to a regional property to grab some stuff.
Found this sitting in the shed. A Rambler Hornet SST. Not a car I know much about at all. He also had an LJ Torana project car towards the start of his build, and hidden in a corner under a cover was an ED XR8 Sprint. Black in colour. And apparently less than 100000km on the clock. Owner wasn't comfortable with me taking a picture of it tho and I only saw the rear and right rear corner.

I remember this car was assembled by Australian Motor Industries (AMI) in Port Melbourne. They also assembled the rambler matador as well as another 2 door rambler.I worked at AMI in Bertie street in the early 70s up to 1979. AMI also assembled the triumph 4 door sedans as well. They also assembled the Toyota Crown, Carona and Corollas. This company later become known as Toyota Australia.

Hyundai Excel (1995-2000) two days ago; someone mentioned one of these recently; they were everywhere 20 years ago.

Ex work colleague used to have one in that dark green colour they came in. He used it as his motorkhana vehicle and raved about how capable it was for that. That was around the early to mid 2000s.

A bloke I work with still uses his Excel as a commuting car for work. So I do a few miles in it pretty often. They are okay for what they are, good on fuel, super relaible and they actually ride okay on the crappy roads we have here.

It was super tidy up close, I was expecting to see a hipster driving it but it was an old duck in her 80's on the way back from church

But the concept is the same. Make a disposable product from old componentry, undercut on price, run the competition out of town and then end up with the market segment to yourself.

The one make racing series idea also iced a lot of HQ Kingswood, family friend of mine had one of those as his first car as a hand-me-down from his parents (he's late 40s) and his car got bought from him by a guy using it for a one make racing series.
I'm waiting for the AU Falcon racing series, values of those things are starting to skyrocket because every Zoomer youtuber and their dog is doing AU Falcon content at the moment - that thing has reached meme status. Even two years ago one of the highest volume parts I sold was for an AU Falcon. |

There were no old components in an x3 Excel. They were pretty upto date at the time.

Their engineers seemed to be heavily inspired by Mitsubishi - utilising good parts of Mitsi design in their 3 valve and DOHC engines. The 2L from the Lantra would have made for a Pulsar SSS competitor I reckon.
Hyundai improved on what they already had, unlike the Proton of the era, which was Mitsi hand-downs. |

Loved the Valiant's, lusted after my neighbour's "Town and Country" ute as a teen.
Had a brief encounter as an owner with a Ranger wagon.
