The human brain is still so unknown that no one can still say he will never recover. It doesn't look good, but people have come back from worse. This guy has age and fitness on his side, it ain't over till the fat Sheila sings...

I agree. The prognosis is looking grim with each passing day.

Watching the Winter Olympics the other day, saw a female snowboarder take a massive hit to the back of her head in a fall which split her helmet in two - she was up and moving within a few minutes.
Schumacher's helmet was also split in two in his crash. Just goes to show how the luck of the draw can be as much a factor in these things as any other thing.

And little more than a hour later another source and paper is saying he's now breathing on his own. It's a shame newspapers will tell you a load of crap both ways to make some money. In the end you can suffer huge amount of damage to a brain and still function fairly normally. Sure he may end up with an average IQ and not remember some of his life but that's not all that bad is it. Worse things can happen

True but I'd hope being Schumacher and friends with a brain specialist who was soon in attendance he would have some extra special care with all the latest research. Probably has been on a heavy dose of cyclosporin to stop the immune system damaging the brain as it healed. Perhaps everything is under control and when you are doing things right you take you time. Perhaps they are doing things so slow because they don't want to stuff up such a public case and by taking so long they caused other problems. I don't know but I like to go with the first theory . I don't think remaining in a vegetative state happens very often, not when you were still talking when they put you under.

I wouldn't take too much comfort from reports that he was still talking when he was put under either. The biggest indicator here would be the lack of response to being brought out of the coma, and unfortunately it's not looking good. *I believe that the jury is still out on cyclosporine's use in traumatic brain injuries. |

latest official update from schumachers manager.
The official updates on Michael Schumacher's condition March 12 "We are, and remain confident, Michael will pull through and will wake up. There sometimes are small, encouraging signs, but we also know this is the time to be very patient. Michael has suffered severe injuries. It is very hard to comprehend for all of us that Michael, who had overcome a lot of precarious situations in the past, has been hurt so terribly in such a banal situation. "It was clear from the start this will be a long and hard fight for Michael, and we are taking this fight on together with the team of doctors, whom we fully trust. The length of the process is not the important part for us. It is heart-warming to see how much sympathy his family is shown and I can say the family is extremely grateful for it. However, it should not be forgotten Michael's family is dealing with an extremely intimate and fragile situation. "And I would like to remind all of us Michael has always actively kept his family out of the public eye and consequently protected their private lives. We try to channel all the energies we have toward Michael and we firmly believe this will help him, and we believe he will also win this fight." full article http://www.news.com.au/sport/motorsp...-1226852949439 |

I heard Schumacher had a go pro attached to his helmet and this is what has done the damage.
Gossip at the GP so no way to substantiate. I'm not a fan but he does not deserve this. Hope he pulls through OK and can resume family life.

They reported a few weeks ago that he has lost around 25% of his body weight due to muscle atrophy. Which is plausible due to his length in the coma.

yet another opinion piece.
i understand some of these people might make comments out of concern for schumacher and trying to 'prepare' fans for news or the worst kind, but at the end of the day, its still speculation. yes, a lot of doctors would be able to have very educated guesses but sometimes precedents don't actually mean anything. i'm still hopeful that his wife will get her husband back in some capacity and that the kids will have a father. i do not care if he can't remember his former life/career. |

Great news, and unexpected. The outlook was pessimistic so this is a great outcome. Hopefully he is left alone to recover.

Michael Schumacher no longer in a coma, leaves Grenoble hospital
By Jonathan Noble Monday, June 16th 2014, 09:48 GMT (with thanks to Autosport & Jonathon Noble) Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has left the Grenoble hospital where he was being treated, his family said on Monday. The German suffered severe head injuries after a fall on a family skiing break shortly after Christmas last year. Schumacher's life was in danger immediately after the crash, and he was left in a coma for several months as doctors continued to work on aiding his recovery. Although there had been no official news about Schumacher's recovery for some time, a statement issued by his family and management on Monday revealed that progress had been made in recent weeks. It confirmed that he was no longer in a coma and that he had been moved from the University Hospital in Grenoble where he had been since the accident. The statement said: "Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore. "His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months. "The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes to Michael. We are sure it helped him. "For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye." The location of Schumacher's rehabilitation is being kept secret to respect his privacy, and it is not expected that there will be any further updates about his exact condition imminently. Get well Michael, we miss you old mate! cheers, Maka
