One that comes to mind is some schools no longer calling them 'black' boards, now they are 'chalk' boards. How is naming the colour of an item offensive. I'd love to see the current rule book thrown out, and start fresh with the basics. Even if they are loosely based off some of the ten commandments. I'm not religious at all but a few of them are a good start, then move on to a larger focus on teaching and reinforcing morals. There's a magnet that used to be on the fridge at home that I often referred to. Quote:

I honestly think if something similar to the Tea Party Movement got up in Australian politics people would notice. People need a wake up.

OLD war veterans are being banned from riding in Army Land Rovers because of the risk of injury and legal action under new occupational health and safety rules. Australia's oldest Diggers, mostly from World War II, survived everything the Japanese and Germans could throw at them, but their honoured place at Anzac Day marches is under threat from bureaucrats and lawyers. An RSL sub-branch at Scarborough in Western Australia has been refused Army Land Rovers for Sunday's march by the Army chief at the Karakatta Barracks. "The commander believed that the Army vehicles were not the most appropriate for veterans and elderly to step in and out of. Therefore it was decided that on this occasion the request from the RSL would be declined," Defence said yesterday. "The amended OH&S Act has resulted in the liability being placed on the Commander and the Commonwealth should any injuries occur." Diggers are concerned that the WA decision is the thin end of the wedge, with one soldier close to the issue describing the move as "very frustrating". Opposition defence spokesman David Johnston said using OH&S as an excuse to not provide vehicles was bureaucracy gone mad. Senator Johnston said: "What do they expect our elderly veterans to do? "Are they meant to walk the whole way? Catch a bus?" RSL national president Ken Doolan said the world was becoming increasingly litigious with law changes around every corner. "There has got to be a way around this such as a taxi or local volunteer drivers," he said. The NSW RSL was warned about the new OH&S rules. It has told all unit associations to provide sturdy step ladders, or other means, so veterans can safely get in and out of open vehicles. The huge Sydney Anzac Day march will have 39 Army Land Rovers and drivers on hand, the same as previous years. The Opposition believes that the new OH&S rules are merely a front for government cost-cutters who they say do not want to pay Reservists who would normally drive the vehicles. "I suspect it is more about saving a couple of dollars to meet the Canberra razor gang's targets," Senator Johnston said. Both Defence and the RSL deny this. They say Reserve pay arrangements are the same as in previous years. The Victorian RSL uses private vintage vehicles for its old veterans that are provided to the march by the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV).

Where and when is this madness going to end. For Gods sake whats next the diggers wont be allowed to carry their banners in case there is a gust of wind and they get blown over.

If you click the link to the Berwick local paper Casey council also states that they are having to repair burnt grass due to spilled fuel and running engines. What a weak excuse.

Council laws like this should not be allowed.
How is someone from another council supposed to know the local laws? They could be travelling from Gippsland lakes heading to Adelaide and stop in Cranbourne for a lunch break and let the kids out for a short play with the kites they just received for Christmas. What a friggen joke! |

Must admit I have not read all of the thread, but has anyone else thought we have way to many levels of governance in this country? There are so many levels where you could easily do away with one or two; so many process that should be standardize over the county are different in each state.
For example, my wife and I moved to tassie, she was good and swapped her license over (I held onto my VIC one), we moved back two years later and she goes to swap back to VIC and they request a meeting to change the license. We go to the meeting, with passports and current licenses only to be told she needs to bring her birth certificate and marriage certificate to change over. It was only two years ago and she holds a current TAS license..WTF. Same country, we got a passport in the time, so its good enough for federal but not state..ah! Seems there are lots of tiers just to keep some people employed. So much money could be saved by getting rid of multiple laws and rules.

We are all from the same country, surely we can all abide by the same laws, be educated under the same system, and drive nationally on an Australian licence. |

Interesting story about a particular one-eyed councillor in my area. I just finished a job last week for a guy who had done some units on his property. Had the units passed by council, approved (albeit with a few arguments back and forth), they are all built now, finished and up for rent. Last week when we were there, 3 councillors including the mayor (one eyed willy) walk through the place not on an official visit, proclaiming that it's all done wrong and it shouldnt of been passed, trees wrong species, style wrong etc. The owner came out and said thats funny your crew stamped my applications which ultimately has your signature. He said he visited to show his other 2 cronies what not to allow in the ward and that an old lady down the road had complained to the local rag- this was his way of getting some credibility of "acting for the community" through the paper. Owner later told me years ago he personally knocked back applications to renovate their clubhouse for the lacrosse club, only to be the bloke cutting the ribbon at the grand opening when the club got a federal grant for the works. It's all about kissing bottoms and improving their credentials in politics. |

Im assuming by this they mean "model" aircraft.... While we all go on about the "nanny" state it must be remembered that a few decades ago it was everyone sueing everyone for the most stupidest of reasons. In essence WE (as a society) brought this on ourselves by the simple fact that some person approached a lawyer and said I wanna make as much money from this as possible. Look at the USA and how rediculas it got in the 1980/90s. Lawyers acting for all levels of government recommend these idiotic laws and by-laws so councils and state governments cant be sued. Yes there are also total "a-holes" in some councils which allow the perceived power go to their heads..... Its the same with companies and OH&S.
