Sometimes Toyota does suddenly come over all radical and do something surprising and out of the ordinary. Take my 1982 Celica, the wedge-shaped hatch 3rd generation model that took over from the hugely successful earlier "rounded" shapes...they made a decision to go a whole different direction, and a big part of that was thier decision to make it so that no one on the design team for the new car was over 25 years old. It was a big step away from the "normal" way of designing stuff that Toyota did, and does now. |

It's more a reflection of having a CEO take over the company who has a racing background and wants to inject some passion back into the brand. Plenty has been said about it with the 86, that and being that Toyota threw out their normal product development policies out for this car and went with what people said they wanted.

With the 5.0L hybrid engine from the LS now that would be a weapon! Won't happen of course...

Moves pretty good!
Cant wait for it to get here. Hopefully no one above me wants one (due to practicality) and I get one as a co. car!

I saw one of these last week near Monash Uni, couldn't get a pic though. It had a swirly camouflage vinyl wrap on it.

Being in camo is odd...I think everyone knows what it looks like.
Cant wait to see what "hotter" version will come.

Hmmmm .... a TRD version would be nice.
Be interesting to see what direction Subaru go as well if they have an STi version as well.

Speaking to mazda hq today the ft sounds as though its put the cat amongst the pigeons as far as the mx-5 is concerned.
If only they would drop a rotor into an mx-5. |

Rotor in an MX5 would be fun.
The RX8 SP turbo factory engine (that was used in the Targa last year) would be fun in an MX5.

The engine in that thing is a total disappointment ... they could have at least fitted a 1.6ltr turbo motor in there ...
Weight wise its absolutely nothing special ... if it was well under a ton then i guess their argument would stand a better chance ... |

An FT86 with the ISF V8 in it - now that's an interesting car. An ATMO 2L with no torque doing 0-100 in 8 seconds does nothing for me. Especially when it's rumoured to cost around $35k!

Exactly ... instant torque is where it is at ... a small turbo would be fun .... but there'd be times were lag would not be fun.

Needs a turbo. Can't believe Subaru are considering releasing the STI version without one.

How our expectations have changed. There are other engine options than the old boring "drop a V8 in it!" philosophy... This car also isn't about 0-100 speeds or quarter mile times...it's about a pleasant driving experience, not outright power...and seeing the way law enforcement is getting tighter and tighter each year, people might just go for a car that handles great and gives you a nice drive at or under the speed limit... |

But "THIS" car (the Max Orido Drift test vehicle) is about plenty of torque low-down for controlled lack of traction and drifting ... something the stock engine may be OK at depending on track and tyres used.
But for the Application shown above ... the V8 is the much better option.

If only Toyota weren't hamstrung by the ****** boxer engine from Subaru. I would of liked to of seen a direct injected, turbo version of the 1.8L engine from the Corolla maybe. I mean, Toyota made 140kW from that engine in NA form years ago even without the use of direct injection. I can see the appeal of the car, don't get me wrong. I just wished they did better with it, because there's a lot of other cars out there for cheaper, that go harder, and handle just as well, that will be cheaper. |

V8 version should be stock lol...
Good alternative to the S-chassis cars at drift events

They are able to be slung low down in the engine bay to offer a low centre of gravity. That's about it. |

Maybe they should have gone with a "Slant four"...? Heave over the excellent Corolla engine and slap it in there...? Just a thought.

Im booked in for a test drive in three weeks.
I really am looking forward to seeing what this car can deliver. I am thinking back to what the last of the honda integras were selling for, same for the prelude, the probe, the cougar, celica...... you name it. As far as I can remember they werent cheap cars at all, around 40k werent they? If I am thinking correctly, it makes the 86 look a bit like a bargain in comparision to what came before it. |
