I watched To Live and Die in L.A. again and I now think it's one of the best films ever made. I just love its style and the car chase is so easy to watch repeated times.

Can't beat mad max 1. I know the opening 5 minutes word for word. The original gone in 60 seconds is a classic too.

The Seven Ups (1973)
I read about this film in a car chase book and it's not available in Australia so I imported a DVD from the US and while it was a little slow, the car chase made up for it! This is typical of a film that was made by the producer of The French Connection and Bullit, while the driving is done by Bill Hickey, the same stuntdriver who drove the Charger in Bullit. The bad guys are driving a huge black and chromey Pontiac Grandville saloon and Roy Scheider is driving a grey Pontiac Ventura sort-of musclecar. It starts off looking slow but winds up with them driving very fast through city traffic and out onto a outer-suburban highway where the most unexpected ending occurs. The chase goes for 8 minutes.

Seen it once but loved it to bits.... The opening sequence was shot in Cambellfield near FoMoCo. There is a drag race b/w our hero in a crap cap and a baddie who is driving the most drop dead stunning Torana (yes I can't believe I am saying that either) bright red, worked engine, with a number plate that read "s.e.x" I love movie with nutters in them who crack and take it out on people that have ****ed them off..... |

A few people have mentioned Midnite Spares (Yes, the movie's title is spelt midNITE not midNIGHT).
This movie is now avaliable on DVD. I bought it about 6 months ago at my local VIDEO EZY for $10. Features some great early eighties Sprintcar footage shot at Parramatta City Raceway. Actors include Bruce Spence (before he appeared in MM2 AFAIK) and a young Jonno Coleman! The chase at the end of the movie involves an XA GT coupe in yellow (can't tell which one) with deleted blackouts and a white interior. I wonder if the whereabouts of this car are known today?

Blues Brothers for me considering it was the movie that held the record for the most number of cars crashed. That is until they made Blues Brothers 2000 and broke that record. But it was a crap movie.

The Chain Reaction (1980)
An earthquake in outback Australia causes a dangerous leak at a rural nuclear storage facility. Steve Bisley (Goose from Mad Max) plays a hotted up ute driver who goes up the country for a weekend away with his woman but it turns into a nightmare when a worker from the plant turns up, injured and warning of imminent poisoning. Meanwhile, thugs are trying to stop him from spreading the news. Lots of car chases involving Holdens and Fords in the country. I never knew about this film and happened to come across it at the library. Maybe you could call it a kind of prequel to the nuclear-wasted story of Mad Max!

Bullitt gets my vote too.
There was also a good chase in that horrible JADE movie starring David Caruso. From memory they used a 1995 Thunderbird and a Taurus? Haven't seen it since 1995 though so could be wrong. Rubbish movie, good car chase.
