That pulling of personal info would likely be an iCloud backup. Something you have to agree to on setting up the phone (alternative is computer backups). Yes, can be scary if you aren't aware of it, but as I said, you click to allow it. Know that prior to iCloud when I had my phone replaced, had to restore everything from my computer, and my settings definitely weren't the same- turns out for some reason the setting to block my number was on and I didn't realise for 2 days!!!
Only thing I would say is that it could perhaps be improved is that Apple could be more transparent- eg saying that iCloud will back everything up including contacts, messages, etc on their external servers. It may already do that though, I haven't set up an iPhone in a long time.

There was a tread about the govts proposal for keeping Internet records by ISPs.
Google and Apple do this, and there is very little regulation involved. If you're concerned by the Internet proposal, you should also go back to a dumb phone as the smart phone is probably easier to track both for location and what you are doing on it.

Sounds like a good idea in theory I guess. His main shock was that he didn't know that actually happened.
English isn't his forte, so he may have clicked to agree or accept something without fully knowing what it meant I guess. I will ask around work on monday how many people know all their info is stored by apple. Does this only apply to itunes or any iphone? I assume all iphones already have itunes by default??

You can opt out of the cloud. I know with my iphone I switched the backup to cloud off. I backed up to my PC only. The great thing about my SIII is it told me it could see an iphone backup on my laptop and would I like to transfer my contacts, video's, pics etc. I only chose contacts, but man was that easier than typing them all in again lol.

There is only one thing funnier then people who have 10 apple products which do very similar things, the people who hate apple with a passion.
Seriously who gives a ****. If people are obsessed with apple big deal, hating on them for being popular is a million times worse. |

FF member A: Owns a iPhone and posts all other smartphones are crap.
FF member B: Owns a Android based smartphone and posts that iPhones are crap (and Apple is the devil incarnate). FF member C: Wants a Windows 8 mobile and thinks all other phones are crap (while hoping the BSD still isn't a standard feature). FF member D: Owns neither, and posts that a mobile should only be about making calls and thinks all smartphones are crap. FF member E: Doesn't care either way, but while reading this thread imagines replacing the word "iPhone" with "Ford" and the words "Andriod, Samsung, etc" with Holden and gets a good laugh.

Well I sell pc's and phones, repair them, set up networks and install software etc, general tech stuff. From experience I can say apple tech ain't great, very hard to work with and you pay more for less. I try to not be biased, keep an open mind, but it's hard.
They do make a good mp3 player tho, ipod classics and ipod touches. Had both for a few years and pretty sure they will out live me. |

Phones have become very clever marketing tools to other items. Your phone will determine How you purchase music / movies - iTunes / Zune / Android How you store music / media - cloud / stream / subscription / Skydrive etc How you share music / media in your home - Apple TV / Win Media Player / etc How you use media in your car - Bluetooth stream full / partial How you work - Office integration / Non office integration from the OS etc. Full MS suite or various equivalents. How you communicate - iMessage / Skype / a million other apps Which Telco you spend with - network types / network coverage / bundling with your other telco products. How you live. - Do you want NFC in the next 12 months or not? So no, it isnt just a phone. And Apple Microsoft and Samsung know this very very well. If it wasnt for my wifes love of the iPhone, the chances of an iMac ever entering our house would have been nill. Until that point we were full MS with MS media servers and players. However we now have an iMac, iPad and Apple TV even though neither is technically best in class. However they integrate well and do a good job. The hidden effect though is just how much it changes your technical world and as per the list above, effects how you do many many things and what you spend your $ on. Sorry for the long answer to a short question but I think its the aspect that is often overlooked when talking about phone choice.

I don't agree with you! We have two main issues with apple products, their accounts department sucks, and they are slow to put apps though the app store, both we have found work arounds for. Now, where do I start on all the other platforms we manage. At the end of they day they are all consumer devices, be it Apple, android (in its many varied formats and hardware platforms) or windows, and they all suck in several ways, but excell in others. It's exactly the same debate as to who makes the best cars, home theatres, TVs, the list goes on. There is something else these devices ALL do well, create some great debates that keeps people entertained for hours.

I've had all iPhone handsets since the original and from memory haven't had issue with any of them. Someone knocked off my 4 after six months ownership which was a pita. I've pre-ordered a 5 after watching the launch on YouTube and its new features are IMO worth going apple again. I had samsung Siii to use for while and I think it's a better phone than the 4S in many ways but i found it difficult operate with one hand like the iPhone. Trying to tap out an SMS or email is a two handed operation for me. The 5 screen is slightly longer but width is similar to the 4 so im assuming there will be little difference in operation.
Maybe I'm just a fanboy..... My biggest gripes with apple gear would be flash websites, having to do friggin software updates every three weeks (so it seems) and what they charge us for a song download in Oz is criminal compared to other countries.
