"On the highway, Ford’s latest hot hatch will return up to 32 mpg(7.3L/100klm), while still delivering 23 mpg ( (9/100klm)in the city. Combined, that works out to an average of 26 mpg, which is all the more impressive given the car’s EcoBoost-generated 255 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque."

Marg99, my LW Trend auto has only done 2500lms and is coming up for its 3000km/3 month first service which means the fuel consumption could still improve slightly but I am more than happy with the current figures which are comparable to what you have indicated here

Please don't be fooled by the ECOboost badge on your ST. Yes, they're extremely fuel efficient, but a Trend should be more efficient, just like your vehicle is much more powerful. Back on topic, I'm averaging 8.1L per 100km. All city driving with short stretches at 60-80 km/h. I'm stoked. The vehicle just had its 15k service though, and the transmission is seamless now. Loving it.

I have a 2006 CL Focus, 5 speed manual. Live in ACT, so a lot of 80k roads but also plenty of road works!
Had the car 3+ years and consistently get around 7.4l/100ks. On the highway, I've had the trip meter indicating as low as 5.9l, which is awesome. I don't have cruise control either so just a steady foot. I put a 2.25" sports exhaust on about 18 months ago. Haven't noticed any real difference other than a nice note. I suspect if I lived in Sydney or Melbourne, the FC would be worse. |

How much are you on? I'm on 10.2L/100km atm, mostly small trips with lots of hills.

11.5 isn't the highest I've seen either. Bare in mind I've never reset average fuel since purchasing the car.

I'm still averaging 5.5L/100km on my weekly trip, average speed 54km/h.
I give it the odd squirt every now and again or rev it out to 3500 RPM, doesn't make a difference if I don't do it, for some reason. |

Yeah, once you go past 3500 RPM she starts screaming, it stops accelerating and 3500 to 4000 RPM feels like it takes 5 minutes.
By the 4300 RPM redline the pistons would be half way to the moon. They must be conservatively tuned, because I can't get much black smoke out of it, I can get it to soot up a big cloud if I haven't booted it for a few days, other than that, no visable soot cloud even at WOT and high RPM. The only other time I saw a soot cloud was at night in someones head lights as I was accidentally bouncing it off the limiter trying to come to a stop as I clutched in, mashed the brake all the way in and my boot took the accelerator down with it. Sorry I was looking at active fuel consumption instead of average. I can get it down to 4L/100km but that's taking off slow and changing gears early. To be honest, I rarely get under 8L because I mean why would I buy a high performance vehicle for fuel eco.

Just reset the trip meter on my Focus. I know its not accurate.
Odometer has 2141km on the clock. Before I reset the trip meter at the Servo it was showing. Average Fuel Economy: 7.5 L/100km Average Speed: 53km/h

Model: 2012 Ford Focus Ambiente (Thai)
Generation: LW Type: Duratec 1.6L Ti-VCT DOHC Petrol, Manual Driving style: 85% City : 15% Freeway, aircon ON all the time Fuel: CALTEX 95 or 98 Fuel Consumption: Avg 8.8 - 9.2l / 100km (500 - 550 km @ 45 liters), calculated fill-up by fill-up, not from a trip comp which sits at 9.0 flat. FAR CRY FROM DECLARED VALUE of 6.2L (combined cycle). A colleague has a 2011 German-built 2011 Ambiente (same engine) and he gets 7.6L on a similar driving style. Also, brochure says 91 to 98 RON...Foolishly, I tried 91...engine stalls, groans, jerks and backfires..... |

If you are doing 85% city driving you should be looking at the urban consumption figure for your comparison not combined. I think for combined it is a 50/50 split in the driving style.
What is your average speed reading? Even so, it is still on the high side for such a small motor. Re the 91 fuel, is it a case that the engine needs to adjust / adapt for the lower RON? What you describe shouldn't happen. Sure the performance will drop ever so slightly, but not the rest.

When I had my 2L Focus, it would ping on 91 in third (automatic) gear. 98 cured that, but it was better in 95 as well.

Been to Ford several times and all is spot-on: mechanically, ignition, timing, no fault codes whatsoever... They advised not to use 91 as the engine is optimized for 95 or higher. Brochure says 91-98, while the user manual says 95 minimum. The consumption is definitely on the high side. |

Agree that it is very high. Somewhere in this thread I mentioned how to test your consumption on the freeway. Do that and see what it shows compared to the official sticker. Turn off air-con and make sure your tyres are at the correct pressure. You 'should' be able to match the official figure. If it is way out, take it further. Testing city cunsumption is harder, but your average consumption should be much lower IMO. Do you drive in an overly aggressive manner? Carry a lot of junk / people around???

i am averaging about 11.5 l / 100km. the car is brand new and covered just on 1200km. it is mostly peak hour driving with very little freeway work. whenever there is a clear stretch of road, i like to open it up a bit. however, it is still better than my XR8 was giving me.

Average speed 54km/h and using around 5.5L/100km with 52,000km on the clock, 2000 overdue for a service, lol.

Yeah, book says 15, mechanic at work says keep it to 10k just in case because diesel stuff is expensive when it goes wrong.
So I've been getting it done at 10, but its been varying recently, gotta get off my *** and grab some filters from Ford and order the oil I use. |

Tires are always properly inflated - no issues there. No it's usually one adult (driver) and one or 2 kids. Ford suggested to rev it a bit higher (2500-3000 rpm), as I have been complaining that the gar has no "GO" at all. God forbid we have 2 adults, 2 kids and a full tank of fuel.....that's "flogging a dead horse" effect guaranteed! The car has 6600km now, and I have been complaining to Ford about the same issues (no power, engine or gearbox clunking and jolting, excessive fuel consumption) since 600km on the clock. They could not fault anything on three occasions and advised to use 95 or 98 (which I have been) and to drive it a bit "harder" i.e. rev it a bit more. This is totally against the gear-shift indicator, which is a bit too early IMHO. It asks you to go a gear up before the car actually does not have enough revs or momentum for it. Fuel consumption is steadily climbing - lowest ever was 8.3 and highest was 9.6L/100km (average since new is 8.9L). Nothing else have changed: same driving style, same routes to school, etc. same average speed, same fuel from the same petrol station.... pretty much all the same since we bought it 6 months ago, including the no power. Only thing different is the steadily increasing fuel consumption. I am at a point where I've had enough and will be looking to change this car for another Focus. |

That does not sound good... If you want action don't drag it out. I wonder fair tradings stance on high consumption? Perhaps saying it doesn't perform as advertised? Consumption figures are a grey area already using words like 'average' or 'typical'..
