My Dad had a Brown XC GXL with a Beige Vinyl Roof.

Brown Suits were the go, Graham Teasdale wore a Brown Tuxedo to the 1977 VFL Brownlow Medal and won the award.

Actor George Mallaby in the Crawford Productions Police Show Homicide wore a Brown Suit, it was often raised in interviews and some shows where they had get togethers of the cast. He would get annoyed and defensive of the Brown Suit.

Id love to find a V8 that you can just cruise, has some street cred, and doesn't cost a bloody fortune to buy/own. I know I missed the boat, but covid tax is killing the chance for a lot of people.

Thanks man, unfortunately I am not in a position to buy one yet. But when I do, Im guessing the prices for one will be so astronomical by then. Thinking 12-18 months from now

So I looked at some websites to see what my pearl black EB 5.0 Fairmont might be worth,
I’m convinced that I did the right thing buying a keeper, no need to sell, a pleasure to drive.

I find myself at this point adequately sufficed in Aussie V8s.

So we did a counter-intuitive, covid thing. We bought the old V8 Discovery - well knowing what can happen with them. And it is a very good example, was inexpensive - far cry from Cruiser drug covid money prices. The Disco has been wonderful, slow yes, but such a wonderful sound. It crackles as it revs down, eats up the tracks (suspension and articulation stock are eye opening), 4wd system is really easy and intuitive and it feels planted. Funniest of all is the reactions as it warbles along: thumbs up from schoolkids at the bus stop, thumbs up from other 4wders, middle age men turn their head, younger women turn their heads anxiously, Commodore drivers go mental and try to race the lumbering beast, P plate girl drivers go frenetic in their hatches and try to race it too, skipping lanes like mad.

I really like the Rover V8 too, it has a great sound. Small with a voice. Massive smiles on faces here from an unlikely V8 choice. I could get more of these and enjoy them.

Yeah, that's why I didn't even mention the e36. They've gone up in price because everyone wants a DIY m3 with a m50 and b30 rotating assembly.

Even a few years ago you could buy a 318i 5spd for a fun beater for under $500. Common fault was PCV, window switches and ig barrel and people gave up and sold them dirt cheap.

No way I'm paying lotsa money for an e36 when e46s are not much more. Don't care about the original badge or spec if I'm doing a transplant. Get an e46, and to be on topic, shove an LS in it.
I just want a m54b30 myself, not paying for factory fit, get a 318 for $2k.

E: though e46 are airbag recall affected, wonder how many getting crushed due to takata? Hopefully they're pulling engines before crushing them so m54s don't become rare.

Anyway, a bmw 3 series is a no brainer since nowhere else is cheap RWD. Wasn't too long ago that people where buying sigmas and other japanese 4cyls for a v8 conversions because domestics got too expensive. BMW is where it's at now since old japanese got too collectible and domestics too big and/or pricey.

What about the E Series Base models in V8?

I had a '94 Futura Classic which i sold more than 15 years ago for only 3 grand. I couldnt give it away really. Nobody wanted it.

Wonder how many were ever sold, yet even still around?

They surely would be reasonably priced, after all they are nothing special really, and the Windsor was pretty asthmatic by then, but it still was a nice cruiser and had that V8 gurgle you want.

N series Fairlane V8's are probably the best value. They don't seem to have jumped much in price. Getting rarer too. There's 1 on carsales and 1 on Ebay. That's it. Used to be heaps more than that.

Sold my EB 5L Fairmont for $1200 about 10 years ago....would have kept it if I had the storage option. It sold within 40 minutes of the ad going up, 1st caller. Nothing suggested it was worth much more than that, or ever would be.

I cant believe how much a V8 EB is worth now. saw 2 black ones on Carsales for 28-32k each.

That said, the AU fairlane V8's are still quite affordable by todays standards. Pretty pimp spec if you're into lazy cruising.

Quite a lot of car for not a lot of money. If any of these were manual, they would be in my driveway today, for that price.

Best value V8?
My FGX XR8 cost me $0 (well, if I sold it).
Bought it new in 2016 for $56K on the road.
Could sell it for north of $60K which means the car cost me $0 over 6 years after rego and other costs of around $5K. The car has les than 10K on the odo.
I doubt that you will find a European V8 with that sort of value.

That's value to no one else, so it's pointless. What you're saying is you haven't lost any money. Big deal if you phrase it like that because many others (domestic or euro) have tripled their money since 2016.
Good luck ever finding yourself doing that - to paraphrase the point you missed.
You could have bought 50k worth of collectible euros and sold now for 150k. E: Only mentioned euros because you did, lots of good money in older domestics too.

Previous to that they wanted to make the best cars to crow about their superiority, but that changed.
The newest BMW I'd consider in e46/e39. Any later it's a mugs game for mechanics who hate themselves and for the rich to just lease new.

Not just euros/bmw, even asian cars are becoming less reliable as they catch up to euro standards. There's a reason why people love old cast iron blocks from ford, japan and bmw. There's a reason why mainstream is just moving to dual cabs. The fun is dead, reliability isn't there anymore across the board. Barra or other marques mid 90s is where it's at. At least BMWs don't rust like late falcons though.

Mentioning Fun...i use my '66 Mustang V8 for that

That is something i'll never sell, they will have to bury me in it first.

That has appreciated a bit over the years too...i bought it back in 2012.

Some of the coupes are still quite affordable too, compared to the Aussie V8 variants.

Its a bit rudimentary when it comes to things like steering and braking...but the V8 is all there in its un-omissioned/non ADR complying glory.

Default Re: Best value V8?

Sorry oldel, but the thread is titled "best value V8".
I bought the XR8 because it was the last example of Australian motoring history, has a hand-built V8 and at $50K represented unbelievable power and fun per $ spent. Now that is value. The fact that it retained its price after 6 years follows the GT ancestry of older Falcons.
Investing in collectibles and euros comes under a different topic.
If I sell my XR8 in 20 years time for $60K, I will say to myself with a smile on my face "now that was good value".

In 20 years time inflation will eat into your profit, it will probably cost $60 grand to buy a loaf of bread!........
Said in jest of course......

Ha ha, I'll eat the loaf of bread with a smile in my face and try and figure out how to afford to buy the new electric vehicle.
