Another thing to like about classic muscle cars is the fact that they are 99% owned by car nuts! You don't generally see fully modded old school cars where the driver would have no real knowledge of their vehicle.. Buying a late model car, bolting on a set of different mags and a K&N Airfilter does not an enthusiast make.. If any one needs to see this go to the clevo section on this forum and check it out. Real cars and REAL engines that like nothing more than slapping upstarts driving tarts! :

I went for the oldschool. Mainly because I enjoy working on cars, and there's just not much you can do to a newer car yourself I reckon.

Now Im not one of the older people, being 18, I still prefer oldschool and drive one daily myself, though as opposed to most people on here its not a Falcon. A different kind of oldschool, it being a '74 Mk1 Escort. Now on the off occasions that I have to drive our Citroen C-something a ratha, I cant help but feel that its been put together without really any thoughts of practicality or comfort.

Trying to see out of the thing is almost impossible, the front windscreen is at a funny angle, any attempt to check blind spots or shoulder check is eliminated by an overly large, horrible, tacky plastic pillar. The rear window would be the equivalent of trying to look through a spy glass...I'd also assume its meant for just a run about thing, going to get shopping etc etc. The boot is the worst system ever, with a double folding hatch, which makes it very difficult to get into whilst open to get said shopping. Now in all fairness it is a small car and Im not exactly that small (Roughly 6"4) but the legroom is atrocious and I dont have a very good back in the first place, but after a 10-15 minute drive in the thing, its 5x worse, its that uncomfortable.

Also Im not sure what the whole hubub is with a/c and things, I live in Darwin where anything under 30 degrees is considered cool and if the humidity drops under 85-90& its a blessing.. I dont have a/c in my Escort and windows are just fine for me daily.

Plus Im pretty sure, back in the 60's and 70's they had interiors absolutely down, the Escort has one of the best interiors I've been in, and my old man has an old Mercede's luxo barge, and I still think mines more of a pleasure to be in. The only let down would be the suspension is too soft for my liking, but that can be rectified with ease.

All this being said I have absolutely nothing against new cars, infact I'd love an XR6T or XR8, though being a student it may not be feasible. You cant beat technology, so the newer vehicles will always have the edge over the old school one's be it power, reliability or economics, I just enjoy driving and upholding my oldschool piece of history.

Oh and on the note of not new cars not getting looks and such. I nearly rear ended someone because I was drooling over the VE GTS that was next to me on the way out to Hidden Valley. And its a Holden for god's sake!...its either that or the 3am sleep time and 8am wake up...I could've been tired and accidentally glanced at the GTS :P

But once again, my Escort is in no way pristine condition, but it always pulls looks, I end up chatting with people about it at the servo, and infact have had a few lovely young ladies ask for a drive in my car...which is odd, because its stock and slow...maybe Im just a super stud :P

I'm partial to anything old school, Ford or otherwise - our old bugs got more attention than anything else, and met more interesting people than I could have dreamed with them. Get the odd "Nice car mate" with the TTG and the XR5 certainly had admirers but not like the full on chats and reminisces by the side of the road, at the pump or parked as you get with a classic.

Pump you spare bucks into a classic restore to pristine and then enhance as you get to know her - she'll pay you back with many more 'cool' moments than those where you just want to curse and wish you had a flamethrower handy.

All you have to look for is the regular cruise spots on a saturday night to see what turns heads.

In WA if you can past Freo's Cappacino strip test, well your car is a deadset neck breaker.

So many Evo's, Wrx's, Statesmans on 20's and the odd Brock Commadore with 100db exhaust wont get the attention of the camaro or hk monaro rolling by, let alone the XB coupe .

Once on Essex St i walked past and there was a crowd of thirty people surrounding where Fast Eddy's was. I thought someone had died, turns out it was a 57 buick 2 door with a brand spankin new paintjob.

I've always liked both new and old, however there is no denying that an old car gets looks, I'm only 25 (not sure if thats considered old or young on here) so most classic old cars are older than me.

I have two cars, one is a 96 falcon, its turbo'd and makes near 400rwhp, its reasonably sleeper, but there is no mistaking its sound or stance. I've had people ask me to pull over and take a look etc, people chatting at the petrol station. Old and young alike look at the car. However, its highly modded, so thats not surprising....what IS surprising, and really demonstrates what a lot of you guys are saying is that when I'm in the other car I get just as much attention...and its a crappy looking TE cortina with a 250 x-flow in it. The body is reasonably straight, but the paint is awful, and yet people still come to have a look and wind down the windows at the lights etc.

The plan is to take it back to bare metal and respray in a nice custom colour. Redo the interior in leather, install aircon, power windows..and use it as a daily...as quite frankly, it draws more attention than the plastic car when in crap condition, so it will REALLY turn heads when its done right. I'm a fan of putting some new tech into old cars, which really completes the package.

OLD school for a cruiser all the way ,You drive a muscle car, you steer a new car. Late model fords look great and are fast but i prefer OLD MUSCLE CARS.

I have recently purchased a BA,I have driven BA/BF XR8's GT's etc and NONE of them attracted the amount of attention that my old 302 XW fairmont did.

Having said that the BA handles alot better goes a F#%K of alot harder and is a much nicer car to drive and does attract a fair amount of attention with the big boy di fillipo, but as far as style goes and just cruising on a nice sunny day you cant beat old school muscle.

Here is a very true statement.

I will not argue that modern cars have it all over classics in almost all areas,OTHER THAN getting attention.

Once a new model is more than a few months old,they become common.Best example I can think of ATM is the 300c,they were a neck snapper when there was only a few around,now they are everywhere they're just another car..

I can modify my XY if I want to, it'll outbrake, out corner and out handle just about anything new. It'd cost a dollar or two I'll admit, but not as much as some would have you believe. No matter how much you throw at a newie, it'll never look as good as one built 30 or more years ago.

i'm 17 and i cannot deside, both are GREAT!!!!!!!! but i'm not saying that all older cars can have more problems because new one can as well but parts are harder to get. i love the xr's and xw's as well as za, zd fairlanes but the f6 typhoon is great and is my dream car. also comfort would play a big part in it as well air-con electric windows, cruz. this is a question that will never have an answer sorry mate.

Its gotta be steel, not plastic.

To me, and I believe many others, its the rawness of the old muscle that attracts attention that nothing new can. Also, newer cars are somewhat dime a dozen no matter what you do. You can do all you like to a late model falcon, or indeed commodore, but the fact remains that they are still one of thousands. the presence is just not there like a classic.

I love my car- it has electric windows, aircon, power steering, all round 11.25" power assisted disc brakes, beautiful comfortable interior, demisters, heating that actually works...hold on, damn, I can't remember if I was describing my BF XR6 or my 1973 Landau...Aah! the description fits both! :

I think that it is clear that most agree that modern machines are probably the most popular choice for daily driving (no, not you Dave!) but regardless of what anyone says, nothing turns heads like well kept old school cars.

To the young felleh who got a bit heated and disagreed with the old school fans, its good to have an opinion but don't confuse that with fact.
Most of the constructive comments were posted by people who not only own or have owned both old and new school cars but have had many of both.

I'm hardly old, 32 to be exact and have had 4 new cars and 2 old school cars over the past 5 years. my XR6 is probably one of the highest specced NA's around- it has every option ticked apart from sunroof and 19" wheels. Its a damn good looking car but looks like all the rest.

I find that young children (4-15) have by far the best reaction to the Landau- local parents wait till I get back to my car and ask if I wouldn't mind starting her up in front of their kids!! They love it and it puts a huge smile on my face too. Do yourself a favour and visit a large car show- any one will do that has a cross section of old and new and I think that you will find far more interest in the old cars.

This doesn't stop you or anyone else preferring new cars- thats good! it would be a boring place if we all liked the same thing but dont bang on about things when you have not had the experience yourself...and I mean that in a nice way! ;)

I'm mostly old school (XT-XC) because I've owned an XA Coupe, mum's had XB and XC V8 fairmont wagons, uncle has had his XT 500 ute with 302W since 1969 and is straight except for RF headlight

It's mostly because of the awesome body styling these oldies have.
As much as the AU XR suits me as I'm radical and BA-BF look tough and E series are cool also, they don't excite me like the oldies.

I mean an XC Coupe or wagon with the rally pack dash, 1974 Landau, XA coupe taillights and XC fairlane/LTD just do it for me.

A friend of my mothers comes to the farm to pick up horse manure in his white LTD once a month and whenever I'm there when he is, I'm always starring at it and sitting in it. Such lovely dash designs.

It's funny what appeals to people. A little while ago i got together with a couple of mates for a cruise. We had my AU best mates XC and another mates XE. This is the 3 cars-



We pulled up at a carpark and 3 (rather intoxicated) blokes came over for a look.

Old Bloke loved the XE...even though he thought it was a commonwhore at first.
Young Bloke #1 loved the XC ...he thought it was a Mustang
Young Bloke #2..owns a nissan 300zx loved the Au...but had no clue what it was hehehehe.

As for me i'd have both old(xy) and new school(au) ...and also a retro-tech cruiser (xy with boss engine)..coz i'm greedy-so each to there own i guess.

the best way to describe the difference between old and new school is music. Bonn Scott and ACDC v's Powderfinger.both are good bands,both are rock and roll,both are australian but only one makes you want to go out and get p!ssed,get laid and tell THE MAN to go up himself. if it aint steel it aint real.

I like the old gear, you just can't get the same noise out of a modern car .The cats help kill that. My TE sounds ok inside , but still not the sames. My favourite car is a XW/XY Fairmont in Bronze , black vinyl roof ,black interior. 302 or 351 would do in a t-bar . Secondly , a XT Gt - been in one doing 130mph ,and it handled...
If work did not require me to have a modern /corporate style vehicle , I would have one tomorrow..

My XC is f-ing incredible. It has crap paint, panels in primer, but still gets thumbs up & nods from people i pass. It has two cracks in the exhaust can and sounds like a tigermoth bi-plane in a barrel roll (because it'll stall if the choke isn't halfway out)
sits too high in the front with having V8 springs in it (its a crossflow)
But its sturdy, fast (when she's warmed up) looks f-ing evil on the road when the jellybeans are shined up and hasn't failed me yet. I had a couple of late model cars but there is just no character about them at all.
I feed it a stupid amount of petrol every week and i'm always doing things to it. Its more of a hobby than anything. I guess people have newer cars because they want something they can just tweak a few times and be happy with.

You can't be in a... lets say a lancer... and pull up alongside another lancer and expect them to almost lose control of their car while waving & beeping at you because you have a similar car to them, it just doesn't happen.
I played leapfrog with another guy in an XB the other night for about 3km down the road, just checking out eachother's cars & stuff, it was great. pulled into a servo and we just talked crap for about half an hour.

i'd pay to see a pair of camry drivers do that.

i like old school but where do i sit with the zh being that its motor n box is outa a ba 02 fairlane (5.4 3v auto 4 speed) just love the look of the zh and the comfert of the seats n all the electrics n now cant wait till the motor is finnished n powerin it down the road :

so maybe i might have the best of both worlds :

Nowhere new by any means , but the Mrs ED is pretty comfortable to drive , reasonable fuel consumption & handles quite well for it's age . probably out accelerate the V8 off the line even . (V8 is a Stocky)

BUT there's nothing like the "Aura" of driving the old XB 302 . Also next to nothing breaks , falls off or rattles , as well I like to drive a car (not thrash) and can do most of the work on it myself. My kids say "hey dad , we've never heard you rev Grandfathers car out ?" (it was my dad's) . Don't need to , it's a "Cruiser". :

Other car ," '59 FC Racing Car" , once again , it's the "Aura".

So I suppose you'd call me "Old School". : (can read as Old Phart)

With New car's , I agree with a lot of the safety features , but I think they give people a "False sense of security" . Ok , they'll do 200 k's + and they've got "this & that" but it still doesn't stop someone running into you or running off the road .

People say "Oh , they're so safe" --- Are they ? People still get killed in them , always will do , it's called "Human Error".
