Being an old model isn't an excuse. Even before the new Ranger arrived it was still selling thousands more per month than the cheaper Triton, Navara etc.

No it isn't. It was essentially 3.2 for everything bar the last couple of years when the bi-turbo came along.

And it still was number 2. It's still only 2 engine choices now. Most of their competitors offer 2 or 3 choices of engine, a big and small diesel 4, and sometimes a petrol as well.

Well Google says the bi turbo was first released in Australia in July 2018 hardly 2 years ago and for a while you could still buy the 3.2 and you can get the V6 now ....I count 3 mills since 2015 ? .....but I'm sure you see it differently haha

How would that explain the huge sales gap between them all? And Ranger outselling them when there was only the choice of the 3.2?

There has only been the choice of 2 engines since 2018. Never 3 at once. For the regular Ranger range anyway.

Didnt the base PX Ranger (XL) get a 2.2l diesel as well as a base engine... So that would make 3.

Looks like it was offered up until 2022?

Listed as unleaded version - absolute powerhouse Mitsubishi 4G64, 94KW/194NM with its 9.0:1 compression ratio.

For reference it makes 2kw more than my circa 20 year old Mazda B2600 ute and about 10nm less torque.

EDIT: Noticed you're in NZ, makes sense because fuel over there has always been like $750/L

American XL has the 2.3 EB + 10AT, but that would be way too much fun for our market….
Ford could probably sell ^^^^^^^ that for the same price as the pointless 2.0 single Turbo
diesel that virtually no one wants…

My bro in law had a 2.2 XL hi rider I borrowed in perth for a week a few years ago… having driven a heap of 3.2s and not knowing this engine existed at the time, I genuinely thought I’d broken the thing after my first drive , it was utter garbage…

I have been daily driving a 2.2 for 6 years now, it's an absolute slug.

It's got some nice torque (385 Nm, basically the same as an early NA Barra) at about 1,800 - 2,200rpm but anything above or below that range, it's just got nothing. I basically drive the thing at 90% throttle in all driving situations. It's also dangerously laggy in all gears until it's at the above rpm.

To be clear, I did not "choose" that engine, Ford offered nothing but the 2.2 manual in the single cab low rider. I would have paid for the 3.2 if it was available. The only way to not have that engine was to get a 4x4 high rider. I don't need 4x4 or the high ride height.

I don't expect my workhorse to have a 500hp engine, but having something that actually responds to my inputs would be nice. Getting stuck in the middle of an intersection waiting for the boost to arrive is both dangerous and frustrating. I'm told the automatic version of the 2.2 is even worse.

My previous PK Ranger had the 2.5 Mazda diesel engine. Even though it produced less power and torque, it actually went pretty hard. Having said that, the PK was significantly lighter than the PX. Favorite trick with my old PK was giving tailgaters a smoke screen, the thing would belch black smoke on command. (And no, it wasn't broken, they all did it.)

The only thing that the 2.2 has going for it is economy. Doesn't matter how I drive the thing, it sits at 9.2 L/100.

It didn’t help that being a hi rider with aftermarket all terrain tyres and a canopy with tools that it wasn’t exactly light so the little engine really did struggle… I hated right turns onto main roads from stop signs in it…. It was cheap which is why he got it.. he’s had a bi turbo xlt for a few years now and is loving it lol

How dare you criticise our lord and savior the Thailand Special!

I wonder if its 'turbo lag' you're experiencing or torque tags/throttle mapping in the first three gears to protect the gearbox, my Focus did the same thing until it was tuned and we got rid of all that bull****, and the diesel Territory does the same thing as well.

It basically overrides your throttle inputs, and won't respond to throttle so you start by creep it in creep it in creep it in then suddenly it goes oh **** you want throttle and revs out the ***.

Then once it revs out the *** it won't give you full boost or fuelling in the lower three gears until you get to 4th and upwards before it lets you have what its actually rated to on the piece of paper.

So you end up crawling through intersections/roundabouts unless you know its stupid tricks and can drive around them.

Its not just the weight of the PX Ranger, I reckon the PK felt faster because it doesn't have the electronic witchcraft with throttle mapping holding it back where you really notice it in intersections and roundabouts where you may want to make quick decisions with the throttle.

Its the same as LT Focus and AH Astra diesels which don't have any of the same crap going on with the throttle like the LV Focus does, they feel like rocket ships in comparison in stock form - the LT Focus has literally identical power and torque to the LV Focus as well with the same engine but it drives like a completely different car.

I would say it's both turbo lag and throttle lag combined. And considering Ford use the MT-82 gearbox in the Ranger, I can probably understand why they are torque limiting it.

Either way, it's a borderline death trap and totally needed more time put into its calibration.

Yeah the old PJ/PKs seemed way responsive compared to more current diesels.
Even the 2.4 diesel in the similar vintage Transit went like stink.

Used to enjoy driving the ones we had at work.

The Auto PK 3.0Ls could spin the tyres off the line with just a tiny bit of stalling up.

I reckon those old diesels made full power in every gear, compared to modern stuff which only make full power in 3rd gear and beyond.

Its the same as LT Focus and AH Astra diesels which don't have any of the same crap going on with the throttle like the LV Focus does, they feel like rocket ships in comparison in stock form - the LT Focus has literally identical power and torque to the LV Focus as well with the same engine but it drives like a completely different car.
I agree with all that and have certainly felt it in the Territory, but DFB has a manual? would it still suffer the same witchcraft?

My PK was the lowly 2.5, but I could slide that thing through a wet roundabout in 3rd gear! Hilarious fun!

I also like the sound of the old 2.5 better than the 2.2, which just sounds so strained in comparison.

The MT-82 is made out of glass, so would not be surprised if it did have torque tags.

My brother had the Bt-50 equivalent of your old one (2.5, low rider 2WD) and it was a brilliant little engine for what it was… and a blast in the wet as you say…. It’s why I couldn’t believe the 2.2 in the newer one was actually decently worse…
