Normally names are kept on file for about 18 months. This time it was increased to up to 4 years.

I think it's been compulsory since the early 1900s.

With the amount of knowledge the government already has on you what did it honestly matter with security or privacy?

If anyone whinged about it the best question to ask would be do you have a smart phone and have Facebook Messenger and/or Pokemon Go installed? Cause FB and Niantic have then got complete access to your phone...

So the media tells us the ABS fully tested the website's servers prior to the date to find that they are more than capable to handle the demand, yet the demand they tested for we're told was only about 1 million logins per hour; did the ABS not conduct any research to find that the majority of the 24million Australian residents will have been logging on to complete their census at around just after dinner time which we all do at about the same time? No statistics on that one????

Exactly, Most likely 5M in that hour alone, that would have killed it

Thats what happens when you send millions of people to the same website at the same time. They crash.

This site was not hacked.

it highlights how easy it is to whip the masses into a frenzy. rather than read the info for themselves they listen to all the misinformation in the media and react accordingly. the sky is falling, the sky is falling....

Apparently no fines now, because of the hacking. Too many people are concerned about handing over name, DOB, address, income etc.... to the hackers.

Note that it says unable and not refuse.

No-one will be unable to fill it out as the option to receive an actual form is always there...

If there ever was a case against online/electronic voting, this is a text book example.

If you think about it, online voting would probably be spread out over a longer period so it may be ok.

They know the how and the who, they just need to find a story they can stick to that appeases the masses and doesn't put those responsible in the poo poo. However, seeing as they've changed the story that many times, any credibility has evaporated.

That seals the deal for me. Christopher Pyne arguable the most clueless minister in what is looking like the worst coalition government in history.

"Elements within Australia" = everyday Australian's trying to comply with the ABS's idiotic instructions asking us to simultaneously take the census on a system which it now appears was built woefully under capacity.

Maybe the "elements within Australia" comment referred to the sucessive Australian governments degrading the ABS's capacity and funding over recent years...

Absolutely.

To add insult to injury, there is an error with the paper forms. People have completed their forms, put them in the mail, only to find a few days later the forms have been mailed back to them! The way the return envelope is designed, and the instructions on how to place the census form in the envelope causes the household address where the form was mailed to to be the return address.

Government and bureaucratic incompetence at his highest. David Kalisch needs the sack. No un-elected bureaucrat should be paid the odd $700k he's on.

This debacle also serves to demonstrate the government does not have a revenue problem. It has an expenditure problems. It wastes hundreds of millions of dollars in staff and programs which are demonstrable failures.

I'll be keeping an eye on the front gate.
Problem is aus post are so slow now, I might be waiting for weeks.

Public service heads on $700k now? We sure do have a spending problem.
And people claim car workers/unions ruined the industry because of their unreasonable pay rates.
