There’s a highway patrol style show from the UK on 9 Rush on Friday nights at this time. They seem to mostly use 3 series wagons (unsure if diesel or petrol) and x5s. They show a lot of pursuit work on this show, boy do those cars cop a beating. Can see why they are used all over the world, they are obviously proven as police cars.

As I continued to watch, the more detail I noticed about these 3 series. They were a mixture of unmarked sedans and marked wagons. The interiors were extremely basic, plastic steering wheel, cloth seats that looked extremely basic, possibly even police specific as they looked awful.

Couldn’t tell what the power train situation was, but they did have larger rims than standard. I assume bigger tyres and brakes were a requirement.

Quite different to what we get spec wise, but at the same time the show was a few years old and showed quite an old version of the BMW Idrive system.

Once they are finished with(gotten rid of) they go back to BMW for complete dissembling.

Yes I remember reading that. I’m going to assume that’s how it met the budget for NSW police to use them combined with fuel, servicing, lease cost that BMW offered.

NSW police said when they started using the BMW that the cost did not exceed what they were already paying for the commodores.
