Yeh it was on recently but im not sure which season australia are up to because we normally run a season behind. but they did tests in water with dyes much like a wind tunnel and then they did a full scale, the myth was that you could get better fuel economy because of the aerodynamic change in the cars travel.

I had a close look at the wagon today and it seems to be fine. Hail was as big as 20 cent pieces were we where at the zoo, but hasn't seemed to have caused any panel damage. Must have missed the worst of it.

The thing with it is that it's only usually over a very small area for a very short time so the chances of it landing on a place that anyone takes notice (like Melbourne) are small but it's more common than you think

Agreed, but not the size as some of the hail stones we were seeing, it was an amazing site, when you watch the videos its sounds nothing like that, its way louder when they are hitting your roof and cars, I wish i ran out there and grabbed some of the hail stones as they fell, they were tennis ball size, by the time i went out there when it cleared they had melted to about golf ball size.

anyone have a good way of removing the wet mould smell?, on top of the hail damage, i've now got that smell to also deal with. i had the windows open in the garage as soon as i got the xr home over the past 2 days but alas, after work yesterday with the car locked & the windows up, the smell appeared last night.....

Best way is to hire a steam cleaner from Safeway, remove the seats (15 minute job) and give everything a good steam clean. The vac will remove excess water. Only way to do it as the water will just sit under the carpet and isnt pleasant after a warm day.

Actually thanks for the tip Auslan dau, your tip to au2000 will also be useful to my problem of rain stained interior from where an idjit left my window down for a whole rainy week.

I've always seen them there but never even thought of hiring one. Always seemed odd for Safeway/woolies to rent them out.

In all seriousness though, as long as there's no life lost, anything else can be replaced. I can imagine it would be a terrible thing to go through, having your house and car damaged. Hopefully, before too long everything will be back to normal.

Well we decided to go to Moomba in the Alexander gardens on Saturday only for a few hours, kill some time, but mother nature had other ideas.
Lets just say we got stuck in the middle of it and dammm do they hurt at full pelt, we took shelter under a tree g/f, her son and my daughter plus 20 others all under one tree huddling for coverage luckly noone was hurt, but the saying hail storm just doesnt sound right so l have decided to call it an ice rock storm lol size of a golf ball, still have a few bruises.
Never seen anything like this before, no warning what so ever, no rain, just nice and sunny then ice rocks pelting down before we even realised what was going on people running and screaming everywhere.
After about 15 minutes of getting belted finally decided to make a run for it towards crown casino but stopped under the flinders st bridge next to art center for an hour just to watch everything unfold.
Finally made it back to the car got changed into new clothes, then it was the hassle of getting out of the city, another 2 hrs just to get on to the westgate.
Lets just say l do not wish to be exposed to those sort of conditions out in the elements again.

thanks for the tip, i'm in discussions with the insurer now, they have told me to get 1 qoute for the repairs & then their assessor will come out and inspect the car as photos won't cover it for hail damage, i told them about the smell & they said let the panel shop know, i guess i'll see how it goes & if it comes to too much, i'll just concentrate on the panels via insurance & do the steam cleaner myself, ha this will be good, yes dear, i'd love to go to safeway with you, might just pick a little something up for myself!!!!!

Yeah I can vouch for that.... this is the second time in 5 years that a car of mine has been severly damaged by hail to the point of being written off (still waiting on conformation of this one... but I'm 99.5% confident it will be), though one was at Chirnside Park the other at Rowville.

My parents also lost a car from hail damage 20 years ago in Croydon. Gotta get a carport on the new place!

Well there's not a lot a sane man can do when hail is doing damage like that to steel & aluminium. You can't exaclty run out into it to put a soft padding over the car, because you'll cop it on the old nut.

They are the first clear pics of I have seen of actual panel damage from the storm. Seen plenty of broken windows. That is pretty much write off territory mate!

well, just got back from the panel beaters, approx $7,500 in damage to the xr, although looking at it you would not have thought so. need new boot & bonnet, front rhs guard, possible replacement of both rhs doors as the main issue is the damage on the top of the frame which the dint removal guys may not be able to pull out, & the big one, re-skin of the roof. . .. the rh rear quater will have it's dints pulled out. just happens that the assessor was there also & he told me that all cars with allianz will be seen by the dint removal blokes first & then referred to the panel beaters if that does not work, he also confirmed that my car was not a write off (thank god) & told me a good xr like mine has a book value of 13.500 but due to the nick of mine & its ks' i'd be looking closer to the 15,000 mark (i'm sure that would change if i was asking for the cheque though) feeling a bit better about it all but he did say to keep hounding the call centers as they will attend to those with the most damage & those who need their cars first.

Yeah imagine those poor poor people not bogged down with material possessions sitting through that amazing storm without a care in the world. I don't think they were too bad off...

As it turns out, I was quite lucky. I live close to the city where my car is usually (but not always) kept undercover, but this weekend I was in Meredith for the Golden Plains music festival. We copped a fair bit of heavy rain out there, but nothing like Melbourne, and no hail. Thank God! Don't think my panel van roof would have done too well in hail like that...

Sooo lucky for me, got a new spot to jam in bayswater and 5 of our cars were all parked under big oak trees and didnt recieve any damage (except i left my windows down a tad and had to run out in the middle of it and put em up)
Girlfriend not so lucky, her mazda 3 absolutely battered, every single panel, light and mirrior!
Replaced 13 tiles on the roof of her house in lysterfield and siliconed up the rest seeings they only had 13 spare.
A lot of people on roofs trying to replace tiles before the next downpour but a fellow fell off the next morning and was taken away by ambos.
Just cant believe the verocity of it all and how quickly it came and how long it went for, never seem to get hail for more than 30 seconds!
Also a friend had a piece of hail go through the connecting pipes and strike the switch on the pump for their water tanks and flooded their backyard loosing all the water they had just collected!

Crazy stuff!! i have had 5 guys working around the affected areas since it hit. I have never seen so many destroyed cars in the one area.

Brother's girlfriend's Festiva actually wasn't insured (don't make comments...my family all have already!) at the time but is now...

Brother sending in his car tomorrow as it is a write-off. He got a decent price too. Got his HSVs taken off and put the stock wheels on. He was really sad at the time because he liked the car. 4 years of reliability, but has settled and is going to go for a smaller import that is 'fun'. He considered a WRX possibly, but comprehensive quotes are murder thanks to all the idiots out there who drive them improperly.

So he's driving the Festiva for now...but since that car really is nothing but a plastic heap with a lawnmower under the bonnet, he is quite eager to get something better.

Another bloody hail storm has just hit Melbourne’s SE suburbs. Thankfully it was short and sharp. I had enough time to move the car and put a doona over the end of the bonnet.
