Considering they are all autos I don't see the relevance, the ZF will keep the diesel in its sweet spot all the time.

Diesel manuals are a different story but irrelevant to the Territory as there isn't one.

Those that do serious towing, and I mean near max. capacity regularly would really only be looking at diesel vehicles anyway so having no AWD Terry petrol won't be so bad and a RWD tdi Terry will still make for a far better tow vehicle then any petrol Terry. Now that I've experienced 3 years of diesel for heavy towing I couldn't go back to petrol or lpg even considering fuel costs simply because the characteristics of diesel suit towing perfectly. In fact the fuel use increase for a tdi when empty vs fully loaded is far less then any petrol or lpg vehicle I've ever owned. I used to get a 5L/100km lpg increase ( 17 to 22) between empty and full payload/towing using the old mixer setup. I now get less then a 2L/100km (10.4 ~12+) jump on diesel for a greater workload. Let's all drive one and find out, you will be very pleasantly surprised.

We also have to be mindful that Ford are adding more products, the dual cab T6 Ranger
is on final approach and T6 SUV will be with us in a couple of years time too.
As heavy duty tow vehicles, both of those will be a step up on the diesel Territory.

That's all well and good, but now it means I have to look elsewhere.

If you do a lot of heavy duty towing, an auto is the trick for creeping and maneuvering.
Otherwise suggest you look at Dual Cab T6 Ranger with I-5 diesel.

What I'm looking for is a diesel SUV with a manual. The only other one that interests me is the Mazda range. The T6 Ranger would be good if I was after a utility. I was definitely keen to support local industry by buying a locally made ford. But manual is the only option for me.

There will be a Ranger T6 wagon. Might be 12 months after the utility.

I know what are you saying - have driven manual cars for last 20 years.
Bought an automatic car 4 years ago and converted it to manual a year later..
But even though I have d4d hilux in manual for work I would say that for heavy towing automatic TD is the pick.
If it has to be manual at all costs than Prado or Pajero are not bad choices.

Can all this talk of manual diesels stop? There has never been and never will be a manual in Territory. Same goes for people asking for the 3.0TTDV6. Perhaps we can actually get the thread back on topic.

The 2.7TDV6 & 6spd auto is perfect for the price/performance/economy blend for the segment(s) that it will be offered in. Ford have made the right choice.

The TD Territory will be a leader in driveline tech, offer terrific economy, exceptional refinement and be enjoyable to drive.

And furthur on with the Auto's, Correct me if i'm wrong, The ZF will only used with the petrol variants while the new FORD 6-speeder has been calibrated for the Diesel

So at the moment, the RWD Territory is bringing in roughly 800 sales a month
and if nothing changes on that front, I'd expect the diesels to seriously value add
to that with possibly another 800/mth split say, 300 RWDs and 500 AWDs.

Do those figures sound about right or a bit optimistic?

We need to consider the whole package. Diesel alone is not enough to bring peeps through the door. The facelift and gizmos together with the diesel may have the impact that Ford is talking about. 50% they said didn't they?

The diesel does get the Ford branded gearbox, but before anyone panics IIRC the 6R80 is essentially a ZF design that Ford have licenced.

My theory is that Ford will manufacture its own engines and transmissions for all its vehicles. Ford Australia is probably still under contract with ZF to supply for the regular Territory. The diesel model is probably not under that contract. I could be wrong, but it is consistent with what else I have seen from Ford recently.

It wouldn't be a bad thing necessarily, especially with the transmission engineers that FoA now have, getting calibrations that work well is the key.
