One thing I wonder...

They had to fly paramedics in after he had been attacked...

I thought that filming in the water where there are deadly animals, there would always be a medic on-site.

Or am I a total spastic? Or a bit of both?

Though I wasn't a fan of the guy, its sad to see him go. Especially for his wife and his young children. My condolences go out to the family.

I read that his wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain and is yet to here the tradgic news. (sorry if this has already been said.)

Rip a legend

A man who could laugh at himself, and get the rest of the world to do likewise.

A true Aussie Icon, Protector and promoter of our wildlife who did measureable good for humanity.

Passed away doing what he enjoyed most, too young with so much still to do.

Thoughts to his family and friends.

R.I.P Steve

Love him or Loath him , he got the attention others couldn't .

Someone in a "Suit & Tie" or a "Lab jacket" just couldn't a message across like Steve could , He had the "Charisma" , even if you didn't like him ,you still had to smile........

Australia has lost one "Big (no hugh) hearted Environmentalist/Conservationist"

Of All the Poisonous snakes , Crocks Etc he handled , Ironic he was killed by a Stingray, very rare

Our Hearts go out to his family

His Wife has just been contacted (7/Prime 4.30 news)

What revenge?

Hundreds of Crocs owe their lives to Steve, as he often saved them from dangerous situations, or places they shouldn't have been.

He enjoyed it, but wrestling with crocs wasn't done just for fun...he did it for them.

Well I for one am also devastated by the news.

He was a man whose passion for life was amazing, its not often you see such a childlike love of just being alive.

He did ENORMOUS amounts of work for wildlife and conservation. His work will be sorely missed.

Not everyone loved his show, but the amount of humanitarian work he did can only be admired. He stood for what he believed in and made huge inroads in to getting his messages across in a lighthearted but believable way.

The worlds wildlife and conservation matters have suffered an immense loss.

My thoughts are with his family and kids. RIP Steve.

Irwin's killer ray 'was probably startled'
By Leticia Makin
September 04, 2006 03:32pm

THE fatal stingray attack on Steve Irwin may have occurred because the animal was startled or frightened, an expert said today.

Victoria Brims, a marine life expert from Oceanworld in Sydney, said the stingray that killed Irwin was most likely provoked.

"I am aware he was filming a documentary and his documentaries are usually very hands on. I can only assume that he had some kind of hands on or close contact with the animal who like us when we get afraid defended itself," Ms Brims said.

Brims also said that for a sting to result in death the person involved had to be stung close to the heart and also have a reaction to the sting.

"For the most part people get stung on the foot when they accidentally tread on a ray and this can be no worse than a bacterial infection," Ms Brims said.

"Their barbs are very strong and release poison if touched. It must have got him right near the heart but the barb would not have gone through his chest."

There was an accident of this kind two years ago in Coogee but the man involved was treated by medics at the scene and survived the incident.

Brims said she had always dreamed of meeting Irwin. "He can be a bit quirky at times but he loved his work," she said. "It is a sad day and I am sure everyone around the world will hear of his death."
I'd say he was close to the sand and the ray being covered in sand they didnt see each other until steve was over it resulting in the sting. If the ray had seen steve he wouldve shot off real quick.
